  1. A couple of days ago, Watcher linked to this very dystopian article about the Crack-up Boom. https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/when-boom-turns-crack-boom

The concept of a crack-up boom was developed by Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises, who is quoted throughout the link:
“If the credit expansion is not stopped in time, the boom turns into the crack-up boom; the flight into real values begins, and the whole monetary system founders.”

“The final outcome of the credit expansion is general impoverishment.”

Von Mises was an advocate of laissez-faire economics and a staunch opponent of all forms of socialism and interventionism

    1. Pigs at a trough never understand where their slop comes from. They just want more.

    2. Over the decades I’ve often pondered how I became a conservatve/libertarian. The beginning was a passage in a junior high text book about laissez-faire. As you can guess, the textbook frowned on the notion. I, OTOH, was fascinated. And that is the beginning of the long journey to becoming one of only two conservatives in Canada.

von Mises’s Human Action is a life-changing must read.
But ultimately as VOWG points out it is all for naught when you factor in the unavoidable mendaciousness of statist potiticans from the left, centre or right. Pining for non-interventionist economic policy from gubmnit is no sillier than the earnest hope for “world peace” (TM) from beauty pageant contestants.

    3. Ha Ha Ha. Yah I remember that. Currently been working on getting Alberta out of Canada.
And learning all I can about Crypto currency. Have started a small business with son and grandson involving crypto. Governments hate it, because the fart catchers can’t get their hands on it, been doing a lot of digging and research.
The economies of the west I think are doomed if history is any guide.
We are building some mining rigs and grandson is learning about investing in crypto . He has not done badly averaging 700 USD per day on his best day.
He finished college no jobs in Alberta, so he took another avenue in Industry, and is between interviews. But so many candidates for every job. So this venture hopefully goes somewhere for all of us.
I am making a little Capitalist Pig out of him. I told him assess what assets you have and deploy every asset you have. To your maximum potential. He is a good young man. His Mom, my daughter was in the top 5% of realtors in Canada before the bust, and made him work and buy his own vehicle, then helped him a bit. Then she made him work and pay for his own college, then helped him a bit. So he has a strong work ethic. And he is taking to ths crypto thing like a fish to water.
I asked him last fall when we discussed his possibilities what he knew about crypto mining and crypto.
His first answer was no money in that Grandpa. He is highly intelligent and was in the top 10% in Alberta in math and science, so i planted the seed and over winter it is bearing fruit. We shall see. He is deploying his assets his brain.

        1. Well we are starting with mining Ethereum for now with GPU based rig, then will expand. Th BTC or Bitcoin rigs are very expensive ASIC machines.
Besides Ethereum has a lot of potential for growth, as they are building a lot of the platforms for other things like DeFi. Which is the major reason CB and Central Planners hate it and warn people away. Because crypto is building a alternate Financial system were you become your own banker, example crypto mortgages etc.
Read up on it at Binance for a start. It is very interesting indeed.

    4. “The final outcome of the credit expansion is general impoverishment.”

This is total nonsense that demonstrates Austrianism is as wrong as Keynesianism. Healthy capitalist economic systems with stable money have TONS of lending and debt and credit going on, and are not poorer but richer for it.

Further, an increase in money supply doesn’t necessarily lead to inflation. Britain’s money supply increased by folds over the course of the 18th/19th century and did so with the economy but inflation did not come into play. You can also have devaluation without an increase in money supply, as Bush 2 orchestrated.

      1. Perhaps you good cite from history how many times that fiat currency whn inflated or the circulation o fiat currency has been recklessly expanded that it has not failed?
The last 2000 years has many examples of why you are wrong.

The Middle-East now missing the calming influence of the President of Peace.

    1. Larry – I fully expected that ISIS/al Qaeda (I don’t even remember how to spell it) would make an insurgence resurgence once Trump is gone. It didn’t take long. Maybe after lockdowns are over they will target the West again…

  3. An example of government bullies beating up a little guy.
The Whistle Stop Cafe decided to reopen for dining in service.

You may recall they setup an outdoor drive in over the summer for a much needed sense of community and some get out of the house time. It was a huge success. It was also a big morale boost for the community.

The results of this current effort were predictable. Several complaints were lodged with Alberta Health Services. The owner, Christopher, holds no ill will towards the inspector, chief of police for Bashaw, and the RCMP. “They’re just doing their jobs.” He does have a problem with the Alberta government, AHS, and Dr. Deena Hinshaw. The AHS has asked the ALCB to remove the Whistle Stop’s liquor license.

Christopher has no intention of giving in and recognizes that his ongoing choice has consequences, but he is determined to carry the fight even if it means fines or possible jail. As Socrates said, it is good to engage in civil disobedience provided you are prepared to pay the price for your disobedience.

All he is asking people to do is make their voices heard with the government and Dr. Hinshaw et al. If you support him the Whistle Stop is on Facebook. At least for now.

    Let freedom ring.

    1. Rd – l remember when Obama was first elected the glee because of his cutting edge use of the Internet and associated media. Not so much when Trump was elected. No challenge to ballots? It’s my guess it isn’t only one side that can print ballots!

  4. Here in Fredericton, NB (Health Didtrict #4), we are in Condition Red, meaning most stores and inside-eating in restaurants, etc., are shut down, and we cannot meet with friends outside of our in-house family. There are police checks on highways, checking to see if there are non-family members in vehicles. Yet yesterday we had zero new China virus cases in the Fredericton region, and one new cases each of the previous two days. In our local hospital there are zero cases being treated.

The only serious outbreak is in the Edmondson, NB region, on the Quebec border.

    1. David Murrell.

Proof positive that it’s not about health and never was.
Our provincial health officer is Bonnie Henry.
I wonder what percentage of provincial health officers are women.

I lived in your idyllic small city from 1971-1979.

      1. You suffered through the Richard Hatfield years. I came to Fredericton in 1985, and witnessing 2 1/2 years of Hatfield’s government helped radicalized me into becoming an activist conservative. Hatfield was a real piece of work.

        1. No kidding. I lived in N.B. almost 20 years, part of which was during Tricky Dick’s tenure. After his defeat and Frank McKenna was voted in, the people were still talking about Hatfield for quite some time.

There is an online Mclean’s Magazine article about him which covered his political career and his night life. I won’t link it here because there are blank spots where stuff was heavily redacted.

Poor bachelor Dick died at age 60 of cancer and an inoperable brain tumor.

  5. And now your diversity is our strength news for today. Blackie’s CBC reports that a Chinese Canadian has been arrested in Holland for being the head of a multi billion dollar illegal drug syndicate. No word on whether he donates to the Liberal Party or has had his picture taken with Blackie.

      1. “organized crime drug pushing kills thousands of Canadians a year”

False. No one is forced to take those drugs.

      1. I tried.
They want you to subscribe for print in order to read online.
I decided it was worth it and signed up.

          1. BT and Linda, thanks. I think I will take you up on subscribing. The ET is being persecuted in our country, and that is sufficient for a subscription.

  6. Woman Behind Bernie Sanders Iconic Mittens Quit Making Them Because High Taxes Killed Her Business
“People have been contacting me thinking that they can get mittens, and actually they can’t. I don’t have any more, and I don’t have much of a mitten business anymore because it really wasn’t worth it,” Jen Ellis explained to Slate. “Independent crafters get really taken for a ride by the federal government. We get taxed to the nth degree, and it wasn’t really worth it pursuing that as a business, even as a side hustle.
    https://thefederalist.com/2021/01/22/woman-behind-bernie-sanders-iconic-mittens-quit-making-them-because-high-taxes-killed-her-business/

    1. Read her post. She is an avid Bernie Sanders supporter. The chickens have come home to roost. I have absolutely no sympathy for her.

  7. An important part of the official narrative is that the Wuhan Flu is deadly and can’t be treated. Hence, governments can lock us down, destroy small businesses and take away our liberties. But, what is this? An article in the mainstream media about a successful treatment for WuFlu symptoms (the first article I have seen in the mainstream media about treating the disease):

“An extensive study launched by the Montreal Heart Institute last March has concluded the anti-inflammatory medication colchicine can reduce some of the complications associated with COVID-19.”

    https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/covid-19-montreal-heart-institute-concludes-colchicine-is-effective/wcm/216bb3fb-b8e4-4291-bdb3-fd3d8e2a85ed

    1. There are actually several effective treatments for Wuhan. HCQ and ivefmectin have been mentioned. They are used in Africa and India which is why they don’t have runaway deaths. The campaign against HCQ in the US was criminal. One reason for blocking these treatments is that they undermine the vaccine agenda. Yet the current vaccines do not reduce transmission. They simply reduce symptoms which is what the medications also do. This is an informative article, scientific and up to date. I read it yesterday after someone posted a link to something else. Long, and detailed. A hard read, but something to share with health professionals you know. A key point is that those vaccines are experimental. https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/qed/2021/01/covid-19-a-realistic-approach-to-community-management/

  8. Second mansion at Harrington Lake was built in response to Trudeau’s marital trouble

Is this scandal # 4? I’ve lost count. This one has big dollars in it, again.

Canada’s National Capital Commission (NCC), the federal agency that manages national heritage properties including the Prime Minister’s homes, was directed to construct a sprawling second mansion at Harrington Lake by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in late 2019 — shortly after the federal election in October and just days following turbulence in the marriage of Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire, a source inside the PMO tells The Chronicle.

Someone should save the link before they take it down.

  9. Never watch the show Question Period on CTV but I wanted to see what The Alberta Premier had to say.The words should, might, maybe were about all he could muster.Try we will, have started, won’t back down, sanctions against the east and he might get some attention.

  10. a number of people in Peterborough Ontario complained about receiving a free copy of the epoch times in their mailbox claiming it was biased. these are the same people that believe everything they see on the CBC is gospel. God help us all

  11. Covid-19 humor from Peter HItchens from today’s The Mail on Sunday

    This is deadly serious

Imagine, if you will, a person arriving in a town on an empty train, at the empty station, for the meagre, distanced and strictly limited funeral of an old friend.

He asks his way to the crematorium. The only available stranger replies: ‘Take the right fork at the dead cafe. Go past ten dead restaurants, three dead pubs, a dead shopping mall, a dead bookshop, two dead cinemas and a dead theatre.

Turn right at the dead museum, and right again at the dead gym. Cross the road when you get to the dead swimming pool. Walk through the first dead university. At the dead covered market, turn right until you reach the dead library.

Then take the empty bus up through the other dead university, through the dead suburb and past the dead school. Watch out for the dead surgery. At the roundabout, turn down the hill by the dead church and keep going for half a mile.

You can’t miss the crematorium, as it is one of the few places where there are any signs of life.’
