Have no fear, Alberta and Saskatchewan will still have to pay transfer payments to Quebec even if they were unable to sell a single barrel of oil.

    3. Once the refineries are built, then what? The product still has to be transported to an export market, if not by pipeline, then by train or truck. At around a million barrels a day, good luck with that.

      The powers that be are allowing only one export pipeline, TMX. And that will send cheap oil to China – part of Canada’s Climate Action Plan.

        In 10 years, if there is anything left of the US, they will be begging for Alberta oil.

    4. Yes CanuckJack, there is. It’s the reason that you won’t find McDonald’s and Burger King restaurants out in the middle of the fields where the cows are, you find them where the hungry city people are.

      You don’t prepare anything that will degrade over time to its final selling state before you absolutely have to. A case example is fast food burgers: would you pay full price for a burger that was cooked last week, sat under a heat-lamp for 6 hours, was frozen and shipped hundreds of kilometers, then warmed in a micowave and served to you?

  5. It has been interesting watching CBC react. The most recent position I heard from them was that Trudeau is Biden’s good buddy and Trudeau will use his friendship with Biden to fix this.

    Zooming out, Alberta can’t depend on its neighbors to be rational and therefore has to not only separate but create the economy of scale required to justify the refining and processing of self-sourced oil ie truly massive immigration. Tens of millions in short order. Hundreds of millions longer-term. These steps are necessary to take us to the glorious state of superpower.

      1. I noticed the same thing about Fort St. John. It was largely a blue-collar conservative town when I moved away more than 40 years ago. Now that I’ve been going back on a regular basis to work on settling my father’s estate, I’ve met a number of ex-Lotuslanders who’ve moved there, many of whom seem quite unrepentant.

        The provincial riding is Peace River North and federally, it’s Prince George-Peace River. They’ve been conservative for as long as I remember, but with the LLers coming in, and often bringing along their politics, who knows how long it’s going to stay that way?

  22. The oil loaded into tank cars at Hardisty for shipment by train doesn’t all originate from Fort Mac. Shutting down the pipeline affects the entire Alberta energy industry and by extension the Canadian economy.. Even Trudeau recognizes the looming disaster.

  29. The Oil industry needs to be more selective whom they sell their product too. If officials promise to shut their industry down those officials shouldn’t have access to Oil products including fuel for airforce one.
