What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

New Zealand, meet your new doctors.

For this year’s intake, Otago had 202 places available for first year students entering from its intermediate year. (Otago does not take first year students from other universities). Of those, 120 were given to those entering under a raft of categories.

Of those, 58 were Māori, 20 were Pasifika, 1 Māori/Pasifika and 29 entered through the rural gate. Eleven students went in under the low socio-economic category and one under a new refugee category. That left only 82 general entry places (40 per cent).

As well as the 202 places for first year students, Otago medical school fills another 80 places with graduates. Overall for 2020, Māori and Pasifika make up 32 per cent of students starting at the school, while 14 per cent have rural backgrounds, 4 per cent low socioeconomic, and 1 per cent refugee.

Auckland medical school shows a similar pattern. For the 2020 year it had 185 places for first year health science or bio-medicine students. Māori and Pasifika took up 52 places, rural got 25, disabled 2, low socioeconomic 5 and refugee 1. That left 101 places (55 per cent) for general entry students.

Looking at percentages for the 2020 intake, Māori and Pasifika students took up nearly 40 per cent of the places at Otago for first year health science students and 28.1 per cent of the total places for first year students at Auckland.

At Otago that meant general entry students had to get, as one student put it, “ludicrously” high grades to be accepted. In fact candidates needed at least a 94 per cent average mark for their seven papers to get an offer. […]

The average mark for the sub-category entrants is not held by the university and it was not able to provide it before deadline.

However, sub-category entrants must get a 70 per cent minimum for each paper. Those who achieve an average of at least 70 per cent can be admitted with individual subject marks under 70 per cent so long as the admissions committee is satisfied about their academic ability to complete the programme.

    1. My first thought too. They’re less likely to grab the degree and be hired away to another country.

  1. I live in Wakanda: the Med schools were eager to please their new decolonial masters and, similarly to NZ, changed admission policy. The net result was a higher dropout rate and a smaller graduating class followed by investigations into systemic wacism and accusations of practising White science (as opposed to B….m….?)

  2. “They never say we want them to have had straight As at school and through university.”

That’s because they assume it, or at worst, pray that it’s true.
This chatty doctor thing is overworked. Although I do remember a doctor in Weyburn Sask who was noted for never talking at all, although he could convey a lot in monosyllables.

  3. Always urge your liberal friends to pick an affirmative action doctor for all of their major surgeries.
Because not doing that would be racist and stuff.

Affirmative action programs that put students into educational institutions that they are not qualified hurts them.
They will flunk out of MIT whereas they could have graduated with honours from Yale or Harvard.
Or the educational institution waters down their material and passes students who do not have the material down pat.

    1. Good one Phil….
When it comes to Commercial Airlines, I don’t see the Woke Diversity BS rearing its head. There’s a REAL good Reason many countries have ex-pats in the Cockpit.

Something to do with a Korean airliner in the early ’80’s attempting to decapitate a mountain in broad daylight & a Co-Pilot vocally immobilized due to “cultural” restraints. All ~275 passengers – crew Died.

      WeTooLow – Holee-Fuk – Ding-Bang-Owe is another good example.

  4. Pasifika.
    Another meaningless term.
Maori are immigrants to NZ and ate the people who were there before them.
And they “migrated” from other Pacific Islands.
Oh well,NZ is Can Ahh Duh’s future.
We copy every insanity the remnants come up with.
Just as with Canada any citizens with get up and go,long since got up and went.

Befriend your local Vet,as they will soon all have better ethics and more practical experience than any “Qualified Physician”.
Reading that article and the amazingly weak justification for abandoning any pretence at credentials, intelligence and ethics,is quite amusing.
May that asshat get to be a patient of his product.

Funny thing how the cycles perpetuate,Doctors were quite recently purely Witch Doctors, great conmen who may have killed their patients, but at least their patients felt good about dying.
Then we created the technocrats, who could “cure” every physical ill or have you die while they were trying, now we are heading for the Shaking of the rattle and incantations to the deities…cause it makes the customer more comfortable.
Of course this begs the question,if an ethic Dr makes the ethic patient feel better, what happens to us europeans when we can’t find a doctor of our own “culture”?

Of course in the logic of our “intellectual superiors” the first is compassionate and the second is racist.
I suspect Gang Green or at least gaseous gangrene also feels discriminated against by modern medicine..

  5. Affirmative action.

Why is it called that if the results are negative ?

    On a related topic:
Is your current or future doctor a Cult. Marxist ?

Do you think that might affect your diagnosis and treatment?
Remember, truth is a social construct under post-modernism critical theory dominating

Especially, if you happen to be a non-Marxist, pale male?

The majority of Medical students have been female for some time, without anyone calling for doctors to reflect the gender and culture of their patients.

Men die at a younger age than women, so when will government demand Medical equity be the goal of the Dept. of Health and medical staff ?

Are the patients being too patient ?

Who will suffer the most from gov’t. mandated lack of medical care due to the shut down of many procedures in hospitals, clinics and even annual check-ups ?
Some of them are already calling Open-line shows.

  6. “The majority of Medical students have been female for some time,”

    That’s different because shut up!!

  7. I’m glad that I’m old enough not to have to worry if my doctor got his/her degree because of race instead of competence, but I fear for my kids and grandkids.

  8. My bet is that the Maori will scream bloody murder if a Maorian medical graduate shows up as the new doctor.

  9. Residential Schools were an early version of Affirmative Action insofar as they were intended to accelerate the rate at which certain children absorbed 20th century culture.

I would predict NZ’s medical school experiment will eventually earn similar respect among members of the student body.

    1. In northern BC the native Indians welcomed the residential schools (my grandma was on the school board for a couple of decades). The parents migrated throughout the year to berry and hunting and fishing grounds, and there was no way that their kids could come with them and still get an education. Not to mention the family didn’t have to feed the kids, so there was more for everyone else. Back then the elders figured that as soon as they learned the white man’s way of doing things, the world would be their oyster.

The elders of today, not so much.

      1. Whenever I made a road trip to my house in B. C., I would pass through Valleyview. A few minutes drive towards Grande Prairie is the Sturgeon Lake reserve and the highway goes by the turnoff to the school.

That’s one fancy facility, at least from the outside.

  10. Well, the good news is that if you can actually get a white doctor in NZ he or she will probably be pretty good.

Overall, the Kiwis are hopeless. They live in even more of a cloud cuckoo land than Canadians.

    1. “They live in even more of a cloud cuckoo land than Canadians.”

Yep, NZ is what would happen if BC become an independent country on an island.

  11. Median Maori IQ is, depending on studies, between 80 (that is Somali levels) to 90. That could explain their success rates for any traditionally measured outcomes.

  12. Paawan Virdi of Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School, and Riyadh Baksh, Kunal Chawla and Richard Li of Turner Fenton Secondary School, achieved a perfect average of 100 per cent making it to the top of Ontario’s Top Scholar list.

    What happened to Doctor Smith.

  13. Hee, hee…. now the elephant in the room.
They get in with far lower marks, what happens during medical degree training?
London to a brick on they have different “pass” criteria.
That’s already going on in NZ universities of my acquaintance in hard sciences where it matters….no-one gives a rat’s about what dross gets through social “science” “degrees”.

  14. Do ya think that the ‘spectacular’ black female doctor(so admired by Blithering Idiot Trump) who stated that masks are unnecessary, that vaccines are being made from the DNA of aliens, that witches are possessing women is a result of affirmative action or is she just another wack-job from Nigeria?

  15. Meanwhile back at the ranch…

Not long for Ginsberg now. The Donald’s re-election takes on epic significance, though confirmation could possibly, maybe get done before Nov. The next Donald Justice will neuter Robert’s, maybe forced, conversion to the left.
Get $2.80 on the Don while you can…..

They think no-one notices mentally incompetent Joe, I guess.

  16. @candida:
Seriously? You swallow Trump’s total nonsense, the doctor comment being one of his most idiotic mutterings.
If so, you really need your head examined.
BTW, I am doing just fine. Unlike you, my common sense sees through the Trump nonsense. It’s sad that you are short on that aspect. Just another knucklehead. But, hey, you have lots of company.
