The study, in which eight healthy volunteers went undercover as “pseudopatients” in 12 psychiatric hospitals across the country, discovered harrowing conditions that led to national outrage. His findings helped expedite the widespread closure of psychiatric institutions across the country, changing mental-health care in the US forever.
Attempting to reproduce someone else’s experiments or observations is not sexy work. It doesn’t require much innovation and you’re not likely going to get famous for it. You might even have difficulty finding funding. But it’s absolutely essential.
Someone with the money should set up an institute for just this express and sole purpose.

That wasn’t really what Rosenhan was getting at. He was more concerned with the diagnosis of mental illness and how it was being undertaken. The sad thing about it all was that he was absolutely right that there were serious problems in US mental institutions and with mental illness diagnoses but by doing what he did he ushered in a cure that was worse than the disease.
