  26. I’m not sure that media rationalization is over in Canada. We’re down to basically 3 newspapers. The Post Media paper in Calgary or Ottawa or Vancouver or Halifax is essentially the same. Sure there is local news but the editorial pages mirror one another. Toronto has Torstar and the G&M as well. Virtually nothing of significance is left in the towns.

    With advertisers all moving to the net there is no room to grow and plenty of room to fail. I think we are in for another round of takeovers. Radio is already there. All the big markets are controlled by 2 or 3 players. Many with ties to TV networks.

    What all this leads to is a convergence of opinion. Everyone says the same thing. Someone starts meme and they all pile on.
    The proles are bombarded by sameness of opinion.

    We need a Ted Byfield. Sure Ezra has carved out a niche by he isn’t producing solid journalism like Byfield did. Canada is poorer for it.

    As it happens, I know quite a lot about the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP, a.k.a. “The Plan”), which ran from 1938 through 1945 or 1946. There is a boatload of information on this particular subject around, on both sides of the Atlantic, and among everyday Canadians whom you run into from London, St. Thomas, Brantford, and anywhere in Huron County ON. That’s just in my neck of the woods. They know more at RAF Duxford, home of the air end of the Imperial War Museum (which has been featured on “Museum Secrets” with Colm Feore) and at Croome Court (home of flying radar — they know all about the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum @ Mt. Hope ON (Hamilton), where the only other flying Lancaster lives). There’s lots of stuff from official sources, including at the RCAF site.

    I know this because we have friends in the U.K., whose father came here in 1941 to work on it. They will be coming to Canada for another visit in about a month or so, the penultimate moment of which will be my mother’s 90th birthday party, on, you know, Magna Carta Day 804, June 15, 2019.

We saw it in Alberta’s recent election, where a bunch of negative ads were released in the 2-3 weeks before the election that profiled UCP members as [insert preferred -ist or -phobic category here]. These ads shifted the vote several percentage points away from the UCP, splitting them left and right between the NDP and the Alberta Party. Without the smears and character assassination ads, I believe that the UCP could have won +60% of the vote and increased their majority by another 4-5 seats.

    The political left is starting their disingenuous campaign early at the Federal level, with the mainstream media completely & willingly complicit in framing the smear narrative. Part of this narrative includes effectively shifting the Overton Window by associating historical mainstream conservatism with extremism, thus making voters wary of Conservative politicians. It’s been going on for years here and in other countries, and will only get worse from here on out. It doesn’t matter that the number of white supremacists is thankfully extraordinarily small in Canada (possibly a few hundred to a few thousand across a country of 36 million, although it’s nearly impossible to get an actual number if you look for it in media articles). The Federal Liberals and NDP – with their gleefully proactive partners in the $595 million media – will use this relentlessly.

    Additionally, having known several gamers who engage in online forums and in-game audio, I know that they can be sh*t talkers despite generally being middle of the road politically (centre-left & centre-right). Articles like this one simply label them as extremists and make them useful weapons against Conservatives in the hate wars that the leftists love to propagate so much.
