China has detained a second Canadian citizen this week, a Chinese government news site has confirmed. China’s state security bureau is holding Michael Spavor on suspicion of jeopardizing China’s national security. As NPR’s Rob Schmitz reports, the detentions appear to be retaliation for Canada’s arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.

Update: Good comments on this thread. I’ve been on the road much of the day and the readers have, as usual, stepped in to pick up the slack.
C.I.S.I.S. has been warning about security risks to Canada and Canadian interests for years. Liberals have for some mysterious reason seemed oblivious or worse.
The first post-Cold War instance surfaced during Operation Sidewinder (about Triad infiltration/immigration), the RCMP Report, that the then Liberal gov’t. deep sixed. An officer actually violated his oath of secrecy to make that public, as he viewed his loyalty to Canada paramount.
Now allowing Cdn. security, military and industrial, to be compromised, the vaunted 5 Eyes, may, in effect, become 4 Eyes, as Canada’s gov’t. is deemed by our closest allies as willfully blind.
WUT? China Arrests Kim Jong-un’s Canadian Drinking Buddy, Friend of Rodman

“China has detained a second Canadian citizen this week”
Yes but is he Liberal?
1) No. Then get him the hell out of there.
2) Yes. F*ckem he voted for it.
Liberal MLA T.Wat better keep tight lipped.
NP has a very interesting article on this Michael Spavor. One of Kim Jong Chubbys pet Westerners by the looks of it.
So, in conclusion. Fuck him.
Did they report anything about his … social credit score? Isn’t a poor score grounds for jailing or disappearing the offender?

Agree.
Putting aside for the moment how we should have nothing to do with China and should never have let grow to be as obscenely large and powerful that it is, Canadians who love communism and don’t want to understand how it actually works are not worth saving. People are starving to death in North Korea and this @$$hole made holidays on their bowed backs (just as Canadians do with Cubans).
Darwin’s will be done.
What do you expect from a country that boasts that Norman Bethune is a national hero?
China admires that SOB and supports the rancid Kim regime.
Any Canadian who thinks this situation is peachy needs to have his/her head examined.
Canada also honour’s the commie traitor Bethune. Parks Canada maintains a museum in his honour at Gravenhurst Ontario. Plenty of Chinese tourists make a pilgrimage there every year to see it. We love our commies here in Sunny Ways Canada.
M. Trudeau still admires China’s dictatorship. Mr. Harper’s been speaking out of turn lately. You don’t think the Dear Leader wouldn’t like to “detain” him?
The narcissist in chief has opened his mouth again and jeopardized the case again Huei and Megs Wazoo. Read Terry Glavins article in todays Nat Post.
Increasingly it looks like Canada has been played for a fool by our closest most trusted friend.
I doubt that is true. This stuff has been going on since before the RCMP Sidewinder Report was torpedoed and guess who by: a Liberal government. Get yourself a copy, it’s online but tough to find.
Certain high level, well placed entities and individuals have been catering to the communist Chinese for decades in this country, right under our noses. You can guess who they might be. The Chinese have been very industrious cultivating and collecting “property” and useful people for quite some time. The “new” Chinese are not liked by what I call Railway Chinese, or pre Mao. Seen it first hand in a not so subtle way, right in Vancouver no less. They’re now outnumbered by their cousins.
Oh well, they’re already here in their vast hordes, so like the muzzie problem it’s going to be difficult to deal with down the road.
“Increasingly it looks like Canada has been played for a fool by our closest most trusted friend.” Easy to do with the grade nine class posing as a government.
Maybe PM Zoolander could sail an aging second-hand diesel powered gender-neutral warship through the South China Sea.
Fueled by bio-diesel, no doubt. Gotta keep those shows of force green, you know.
Not cultural enough. He would go in a junk.
He would go in a junk.
Which was built in an Irving-owned shipyard, no doubt.
” Prior to the arrest of Meng Wanzhou – who faces possible charges in the U.S. fraud connecting to trade sanctions with Iran – the U.S. has pressured European countries and other allies to limit use of Huawei’s technology, warning they could be opening themselves up to surveillance and theft of information.
Canada is one of the few remaining Western nations to apparently ignore those warnings and has welcomed the company to do business here, including in B.C. and Richmond.
Given her close ties with Huawei, the Richmond News asked Wat for her thoughts on why Canada seems to be the exception to the rule for Western nations when it comes to dealing with Huawei.
However, a B.C. Liberal Party caucus spokesperson spoke in her stead, saying that Wat is “refraining from comment,” due to the “international sensitivity” surrounding the subject.
He added that no comment would be forthcoming due to the “fact that Canada isn’t directly involved.” ”

You beat me by two minutes. Don’t see how they fix this. Wow-way is in like the alien in John Hurt’s tummy. Ain’t no fixing that.
Note- When the Trudeau Liberal government decided not to purchase the state of the art F-35s. It relinquished our middle-power status in NATO and partner status in NORAD. P.M. Trudeau’s decision was seen globally for what it was, that of a beta male.
Being bullied by totalitarians was the predictable result. Expect such to increase until Just in bows to Premier Xi and offers to pay him tribute, as is the obligation of a client state.
When you are a spineless sycophant, you have no friends.
Looks almost like China and USA are conspiring to mock “Little Potato”.
Americans kick military ass on our behalf; let them kick some Chinese government butt on our behalf.
If our PM was smart he would summon the US Ambassador to Canada for a chat and ask her to please pass along our displeasure at the Chinese attempted bullying BS (picking on Canada, mad at US), and of course we were pleased to honour their extradition request. BTW, perhaps our allies in Washington might want to flex a few diplomatic reps in our favour, and bitch slap China (the country, not the people) for us.
If he was smart.
“When you are a spineless sycophant, you have no friends.”
Au contraire, John. I’d say he’s got at least 39 percent of this electorate, and perhaps another 20 plus if you roll in the Greens and NDP…who are, after all, birds of cackling feather.
And on the international stage: May, Macron, Merkel…..
I meant friends.
With “friends” like you list,Justine needs no enemies.
Naturally he will self destruct if encouraged .
I will be voting Liberal 2019,as in Goodbye Canada.
One more term of Justine and Ralpy citizens will be engaging in random acts of rage and self loathing.
When we finally realize just how stupid we are, lashing out will be the norm.
How does it go;”The best part of banging your head on the wall.
Is when you stop”.
One more term of Justine and Ralpy citizens will be engaging in random acts of rage and self loathing.
H. L. Mencken once said: “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.” Sadly, the same can be said of the average Canadian voter.
I knew back in 1968 that PET would be bad for this country and so did a lot of other people. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough and he was officially elected as PM that year.
In 1972, he was up for re-election. I thought that Canadians were smart enough to see through his blarney, but, no, those in the Quebec-Hamilton corridor were promised lots of free stuff and they helped return him to office. He didn’t get the majority he expected and punished those regions of the country that had the audacity not to anoint him as Pierre the Magnificent.
We finally punted him from office in 1979, though Joe Who was hardly an improvement. PET, once again, promised the Quebec-Hamilton corridor lots of free stuff and was returned to office the following year.
The Liberal Party is like the “old dope peddler” from the Tom Lehrer song. Its tactic is to promise the voters whatever they want and they’ll vote for it. The party doesn’t have to deliver anything because they know that the average voter is dumb enough to fall for whatever malarkey he or she is told.
Did PM Clown Socks and his team, the Never Ready Brown Stars, think the Chicoms would not retaliate? Do they not realize we are still viewed as barbarians? And thirdly, how soon till the 5 Eyes gets reduced when Kanadistan gets the blindfold?
If you want to dance with the crows, you’ve got to pay the piper.
Glavins article is a waste of time. Orange man bad – blah blah.
There is something much deeper at play here, because lets be frank – Canadas current leadership is part of the globalist/corporatist elite.
Its not like they are held to account for anything (see the Clintons), or would necessarily hold their allies to anything.
If Trudeau wanted to, I would think he could have blocked/interfered in this – and made great hay out of standing up to the bully Trump.
Its like it was tailor made for such a response. Odd that Trudeau and his backers are playing ball with the US on this.
The Never Ready Brown Stars and their Leader, Spud the Dud, don’t know whether to break wind or sing a song. Their arrogance will never let them see how ignorant they truly are.
It’s one of the downsides of being dependent on resource exports that in attempting to reduce dependence on the US leviathan state and their current global mercantilist in chief we have increased dependence on the Chicom’s corrupt crony capitalism and their sleazy actors. It’s a bit of a mess that the Spawn with his Chicom pom poms can’t cheer-lead his way out of.
No conservatives in the BC Librano caucus. I don’t why anyone half conservative would consider that party a choice.
I agree with the SDA headline, that Trudeau and company are now dealing first hand with a totalitarian state that all Liberals have loved up to now. There is a lot to say about this. It will take years to extradite corporate executive Meng to the U.S., and years for her trial in the U.S. During all of that time, are China and Canada going to fight a tit-for-tat war over this extradition arrest? I agree with the majority of posters on this thread that Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland are bumbling amateurs, children fighting against adults. But there is more to it than that: Global Affairs Canada is very left-wing, as left wing as Justin Trudeau — so here we will be watching left-wing ideologues trying (in vain) to mix it up with China.
Then there is the issue of Huawei corporation as a possible spy agency, and the fact that there is a vast network of Chinese spies in Canada doing God knows what. If Trudeau and company had any guts, they would start dismantling te vast spy network. China would retaliate of course. I have been watching BNN news all day, and they have been reporting that China might start blocking their exports. So Canada is in a pickle here. China is totalitarian and plays rough.
My God your headlines say everything!!
Prinz Dummkopf is such an admirer of China that he wants a society like it has.
He wants to punish his internal enemies without accountability or due process, just like China. He wants a hobbled press, just like China. He wants to deny individual citizens their rights, just like China. He wants to punish foreign countries whose actions displease him, just like China…. oh, wait a minute…. just like China’s doing to Canada right now?
Well, your Highness, you wanted it and now you’re getting it. How do you like China now?
there is something to this that has not been reported on yet. In a week or two we may find out what is behind this. Commy loving globalist taking it in the “back” hole is funny though!!!!
Chicoms could arrest every single Canadian in China right now, and nobody outside the CBC would notice. That’s how important this country is on the world stage right now. No army, no navy, no airforce, no money, no industry, just a big pool of oil and a lot of trees. Oh, and some potash. Everybody likes potash.
But we arrest one (1) Chinese businesswoman, and that is a Big Smoking Deal.
I think we are not being well-served by our political class as a whole. Possibly something should be done about that. You know, before the fricking Chinese Navy shows up in Vancouver harbor.
Neither Xi nor Trump have any respect for our moralizing Sockpuppet PM
…..He added that no comment would be forthcoming due to the “fact that Canada isn’t directly involved.”…..
Really?
Jean Chretien: My Stories, My Times
Groper’s minister of tourism will still be heading to China, for a tourism promotion between our two countries. And another of little potato’s ministers explains that trade and other relations will still go on. That will show those Chinese bastards.
Chinese intelligence agents in BC will find a way to smuggle Meng out of Canada. She’ll be home in plenty of time for Chinese New Year.
The two Canadian diplomats will be murdered by their Chinese kidnappers shortly afterwards. Some fairy story will be told about how they died or committed suicide in their cells.
In public, Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland will swallow their story whole, and the CBC will move on to its continuing coverage of Donald Trump’s coiffure. In private, they will have received the reminder of who they work for loud and clear.
China will feed small pototo his left nut and he will have no choice but to consume it
I dunno, didn’t we sign some trade agreement with the USA and Mexico, just recently? Who is twisting who’s arm here?
I’d say that Trump has put a big spike in Canada/Chinese relations, cultivated over decades, if the Sidewinder report was just an eye opener on the subject. The boy was a reluctant virgin at the signing ceremony. Hoisted high for all to see, especially when the moves were already made on our little China Doll. Chairman Xi, who I might add is not one not to take advantage of using the incident to remind his “escaped” freres, outside the influence of the home team that their days are numbered, too. I mean, c’mon these expats circumvented Chinese laws to get their wealth out of China to carry on with their nefarious deeds out side the scrutiny of the Home Team. They certainly were’t shipping any of the gelt back home, either.
If they were Triads or Tongs, they were instructed to “leave” or face execution if they stayedin Hong Kong. That’s how things work when China retakes territory. The LPOC operatives were in like flint to facilitate their arrival in the Lower Mainland.
Those days are over under Xi, he’s The One, for now. LPOC, still small town cheap.
I’ll believe any difference in our “relationship” with China is telegraphed when someone like Jean Chretien, or any number of Power Corp type people doing shuttle diplomacy or “trade missions” are suddenly sidelined by Xi forces of evil, rather than these petty little wankers recently rounded up. Just for show. Expendable.
Justy had to pick a side and show “good faith”, reluctantly though. Steel tariffs (on dumped, crap, shoddy, Chinko steel too), a trade deal he hates, now this? That border could slam shut tomorrow and this country would be in deep doo doo, all under the care of a Liberal .Gov and a bought and paid for media circus. Wasn’t in the script, eh?
Wait ’til Trump goes to work on that fentanyl trade coming trough Port of Vancouver. Wouldn’t put it past Trump to stop ships and search at sea, before they get to Canada, sorta like that Cuban Missile Crisis. That precedent has been set and China doesn’t have the navy to stop it. Sky’s the limit I say on dealing with our trade with the communist Chinese. What will Sock Boy do? Double down on carbon taxes? If I was Rachel I’d pick that moment to suspend fuel shipments into the LM, Seattle, too. Especially, like those frenchies, BC hypocritically ships upwards of twenty million tonnes of some very dirty coal out of Port of Vancouver, too. I find it hard to fathom why Quebec is willing to pay world prices for their oil, when they could take advantage of a lower priced version, produced right here at home.
Must be something to do with that “Petro Dollar” interfering with that low cost manufacturing, with cheap Chinese inputs to ship into the US market.
That’s the way I see it.
Who is twisting who’s arm here?
Most likely explanation: Justin and Chrystia have foolishly thrown in with Trump’s American opposition, the “deep state” that still controls most parts of the Washington DC government. Arresting Meng was intended to spike Trump’s trade negotiations with Xi. The financial sector and the deep state are perfectly happy with the way trade with China works now, as is the LPOC. This has severely chafed both Trump and Xi. Predicting what will happen next is beyond my crystal ball abilities, but I have a feeling Justin chose poorly.
BTW, when Quebec refineries buy offshore oil, it usually isn’t any more expensive than Alberta/Saskatchewan oil, and they don’t need to adapt any of their equipment to refine it. I’d like a pipeline to the east too, but they don’t see any urgency.
