Imperial Oil To Halt Project Expansions In Canada;
Imperial Oil says they won’t be doing any more project expansion in Canada, as regulatory burdens make the approval process far too time consuming.
Their CEO says “I have lived and worked in a lot of places, and four-and-a-half years to get a project that has strong economics, pace-setting environmental performance, is inordinately long.”
It took them a while, but they’re finally taking my advice.

Why should this be surprising? It was obvious from the beginning of their respective terms in government that Red Rachel and wee Juthtin want to starve Alberta into submission.
Ottawa never wanted Alberta to have an equal place in Confederation. We were frequently reminded of it by PET. Notley is a long-time hard-core communist and her fondest dream is to destroy the oil industry. Commies hate free enterprise and I doubt that she’s waging her war out of concern for the environment. Mr. Dressup, on the other hand, would like nothing better than to complete what Daddy started.
Re: Complicated and expensive laws and rules concerning oil development.
”How do we solve the problem?” one might ask. Wait until the Chinese and the Russians start running low in oil.
They`ll solve it for us!!
Under the guise of Green, Canada’s progressive politicians have been sabotaging the energy industry and national unity. PMs from Quebec (Lib or PC) almost always mean hard times for Alberta and Saskatchewan and flareups in national unity sqabbles. What exactly are the benefits for Alberta and Saskatchewan for staying in Canada? Hobbling our main industries? Decreasing our standard of living by imposing carbon taxes? Being treated like second-class citizens?
Economists are fond of saying that politicians should neither be credited for economic upswings nor blamed for downturns. I don’t think that’s true, CEOs doing business in western Canada are all but saying they’re abandoning Canada and that federal Liberal policies are the reason. Meanwhile, crony capitalists doing business in Ontario and Quebec that are being given truckloads of taxpayer cash.
PMs from Quebec (Lib or PC) almost always mean hard times for Alberta and Saskatchewan and flareups in national unity sqabbles.
That’s because Quebec/Ottawa regard Alberta and, to a lesser extent, Saskatchewan as rebel regions. That view is similar to how Beijing sees Taiwan in which the former regards the latter as a renegade province. Western Canadian economic strength is seen as anathema to the Laurentian elites.
I agree with you about the prime ministers. I spent a lot of time on the dole during the 1980s. I was just as unemployed when PET was in charge as I was when Lyin’ Bryan was in 24 Sussex. Both were from Quebec.
My favorite is when people from the ROC say both Alberta and Quebec are whiners. Perhaps…but there’s a huge difference: Quebec whines because it doesn’t think its getting enough federal government handouts and freebies ( the gimmee, gimmee mentality) ; Alberta only “whines” when the federal government is taking too much money or sabatoging its economy (a go away and leave us alone plea).
When Reform went east I was upset for what that meant. Manning went east to try and convince all of Canada that a conservative approach to running the country would equate to better outcomes across the country. Many in Reform wanted the movement to have a federal voice but double down on that effort by taking control of provincial governments in BC, AB, SASK and maybe MAN. This effort that took over 10 years died in Ottawa.
Western conservatives like myself do not think conservative thought and direction can be revived by re-electing a federal conservative government. The CPC does not bring critical national issues for national debate. For that matter neither did Harper. The CPC which at its core exposes fiscal responsibility and yet has no coherent platform for communicating or establishing a philosophical base for that message. Financial literacy does not really exist anymore today than it did during the Harper years. If the CPC was serious about their core tenant then why is this the case?
Why does the east deliberately sabotage western economic interests, usually under Liebel leadership? I do not think it is because they are led by fools. From the time of confederation the east has always feared the economic potential of western Canada. That is why they would not allow AB + SASK to enter confederation as one province which had been proposed. A strong Western Canada is a economic threat to the east and eventually a threat to the unity of Canada. A united West would have the power to ‘with hold’ a revenue stream which in turn would threaten the highly dubious credit ratings of most constituencies in the east.
Many conservatives like me will now stand by the sidelines as the inevitable fiscal collapse of Canada draws nearer each year. IMHO it will take such a massive failure to affect change. I do not expect the country to survive this fiscal collapse. The West will separate.
Yes, I agree. The media is doing its part by poisoning the minds of the people in the east and left coast.
A couple of weeks ago we visited our son and his wife in Chilliwack and they supported not rebuilding the Kinder Morgan pipeline through the Fraser valley because of the danger of leaks and the contamination of the valley and the water table. I said that the current pipeline has been there for five decades or so and there has been no contamination and that the pipeline building process is more advanced and safer today.
Their killer statement was, actually the wife said this, that Alberta and Saskatchewan were too rich and needed to have their resource industry curtailed. I asked, where do they think the money for equalization and their university schooling assistance comes from? They didn’t or want to hear this. They are both back in university in their late 30s, with four children, studying to be teachers. This hurt me greatly as I know they are smart kids and voted for Harper. They get their local news from CTV and Global.
I am still depressed and deeply disappointed about this exchange.
The she in the family is 1/8 native blood and the courses she is taking suggest she will be teaching indigenous history in high school. A short conversation about that topic indicates that she is being taught that native life was a paradise on Turtle Island before the settlers came. But this is another topic for different thread.
Your good news – relatively, I guess – is that the jobs aren’t disappearing, they’re just moving south down here.
It’s good news because it’s easier to move work back and forth if the work continues on no matter where it has to go – capital equipment still functions and people remain trained and all that – and so when your gov gets its mind back and you can compete again, the work can just pack up and move back north, where the oil is. Which won’t be a less valuable asset by then.
Just saying, it doesn’t suck as much as it might seem to suck at first blush.
Venezuela move over, we are coming to join you. Soon Canadians will be nothing but hewers of wood and drawers of water, or baristas at Starbucks. Ontario is almost an industrial wasteland and western Canada is joining the wasteland at an alarming rate.
The great economy was good while it lasted. PM Butts and his juvenile government is winning.
sorry, there will be no jobs at Starbucks, they will be closed due to a lack of economic activity. the hewing of wood and the drawing of water will be for our survival.
I wouldn’t be looking into how many oil stocks these decision makers own, Horgan for example. I’d be looking into railroad stocks.
A pipelne would solve the issue, this just diverts it.

I bet they are cheering this news at Justin’s Prime Ministers Office, and at the corporate offices at the CBC and the Globe and Mail. The war against western Canadian energy development contines, and the bad guys are winning.
Yes, no doubt soros is pleased with what his boy has achieved.
third world politics and politicians. it is going to get much worse.
These business decisions represent “new” investments. The true cost of the current government decisions won’t be felt for another 5-10 years. Then it is going to hurt just as any announcement of “new” projects would similarly take years to improve the economy. When the current government leaves office with the economy heading for the dumpster, the next government will bear the brunt of the anger, such is the intelligence of the average voting Canadian.
Canada continues it’s reputation as the place where wealth, innovation, investment, freedom and liberty go to die. Welcome to Venezuela North.
The majority of Canadians are moving unknowingly towards a dim future where most of humanity will no longer exist and those that do will be scratching an existence out of a filthy feudal shortened life-span. That is the future of green theocracy. This will take several more generations of cultural, moral and economic decline but the key to its success is state control of access to energy. Butts, Spawn, Horgan, Weaver, Notley and many others are all aligned toward that dystopia although I think only Butts and Weaver are bright enough to be aware of the end game making them consciously evil while the others, are mindless thugs.
Very sad to witness just how much economic destruction can take place in such a short time.
The Hotel de Bilderberg in Oosterbeek Netherlands had a conference on May 29-31 1954 and established the Bilderberg Group. Their 64th conference is June 7-10 2018 in Venice Italy.
They control you, me, and our world. Most of us can not contribute nor are we invited to this elite conference of 150 of the most V.I.P s. What is happening to us and our economy has all been prescribed.
Freedom is a myth. Death and taxes are forever!
The neo-Marxists are in the driver’s seat with the pedal to the metal.
America used to obtain MOST of our oil from Canada. Thank God for fracking, horizontal boring, and recovery from “spent” oil fields. Thank God for Donald J. Trump!
But I am not gloating. Canada is facing a crisis of Communism. A crisis of a catastrophic eco-economic disaster. Eco-Socialism run amok. I am sorry, my fellow Canadians. I hope you can turn it around, before anyone freezes to death.
“…before anyone freezes to death.” In the long run that is part of the plan. Remember, they think there are too many people with too high a standard of living.
Don’t forget that the Club of Rome thought there were too many people, period.
Technically BA, the Club of Rome, et al they only thought there were to many Brown, Black, and Yellow people.
You’ll notice that overpopulation was always something that took place in India, China, Africa, Mexico, etc.
The 871 people per square mile in Massachusetts and 742 people per square mile in Connecticut are never seen to be problems, or “crowded” or “unsustainable”… ‘cuse they are all liberal, rich and white.

As a Texan, who works in the oil industry, I would like to thank PM Trudeau, the Liberals, the environmentalists, the CBC, the Globe and Mail, and all the other Canadians who have worked so hard and so tirelessly to export your energy industry to us.
The jobs, investment dollars, and fine, upstanding, expensively trained workers you send us will not be put to waste.
Rest easy in knowing that, in sacrificing your future, your children’s future, and the future of Canada; the contribution you make to the economies of Houston, Lubbock, and Dallas will not go unrecognized.
We really ought to build the Shiny Pony a statue or something….
With all due respect, there were Americans working in Alberta too, especially during Obama’s era. But you’re right. We’re fu☆ked!
