Blog Notes (pinned)

The blog upgrade - platform move is about to get underway today, as we transition from the ever-deteriorating Movable Type over to Wordpress. The goal is to keep the blog as close to the original in design and layout as is possible, but with improved commenting and publishing function.

It may go well, it may go... badly. In all likelihood the old content of SDA will be archived, and we'll start anew with a clean database. But, I don't know.

At any rate, cross your fingers all goes well. If the blog goes dark, it's because we're working on it. If it's unreachable for a few days, it's because we broke something. If that happens, I'll keep you all updated through my twitter account

Thanks to everyone who's contributed their time and donations towards SDA over the past few months -- your support is appreciated, and it's long past time we provided you a site with cleaner functionality.

Wish us luck, because we're going to need it.

Good luck! Looking forward to the new format.

Please do NOT use Facebook login. Many of us just deleted out Facebook accounts because we are tired of being spied on and have out info abused.

Thanks,
J

At the risk of offering up gratuitous advice, the watchwords should be "keep it clean and simple" and beware enticements to add "improvements". More buttons and bells is not necessarily "progress".

All the best, I will be very disappointed if we loose one of the few pure pleasures left on the internet...

All the best with this. We wait with baited breath.

Jesus was down for three days for his upgrade. We still love Him.

Change what you want, preserve what you can. But if you rush things and forget the dead rodent like last time we will notice.

I, for one, have NO Facebook account, and I won’t sign up for Wordpress or Discuss ... I have always appreciated the (relative) anonymity of SDA ... yeah, Kate and Lance can easily discover my “true” identity ... but I actually TRUST them both. A handshake kind of TRUST that you can have with people of integrity. I completely TRUST a woman who posts what Kate posts, intelligent, reasoned, measured, clever-as-hell, and to my eternal delight ... snarky (Lance too). What I call ... salt of the earth kind of people. I feel similarly about many, many, of my fellow SDA commentators. I feel no such thing about the leftist ghouls who operate the pages of Facebook, Discuss, or Wordpress. I hope I can remain after the change. I quite enjoy the whole lot of ya. Good luck with the upgrade.

Good luck and Best Wishes, Kate.

Thank you Kate and good luck.

There are folks that are saying what Facebook, Twitter, Discus, Wordpress, Typepad need is for a conservative pushback, and deleting or not participating in their platforms, amounts to allowing yourself to be shuffled out the social media door without so much as a whimper.

I like to argue back, be a participant, I get that you do as well in your many enjoyable to read comments here at SDA, and note that Rush, Levin, Hannity are still posting regularly on Facebook for these similar reasons. While Pamela Geller, Lauren Southern, Jordan Peterson, are still using Facebook somewhat regularly, though I do think they're being muted by the overlords.

Kenji,

What was the name and birth date of Mel Brook's 1000 year old man?

Might be a great nom-du-plume considering how similar your styles are!!!

Joking of course, but I've always enjoyed your comments.

SDA - Good luck on the change over!

K.K , since you are pretty literate and make a lot of sense, it pains me somewhat to correct you. However, some things must be done. Before I make my comment I wish to clarify that I am not above error myself, my dear old Mother (who was a country school teacher) that says it all, used to carefully monitor my speech until she expired at 90, I was then 65. Ennyhoo, in this case the word is "bated" not baited.

Says ‘Grumps’ ... Ha ha ha. Yeah, I’m just a Luddite (aboot some things). I should change my name to Grumpy ... since our cultural decay makes me quite grumpy. Yeah, I am starting to sound like my John Birch Society member grandmother.

Calgary Mark ... of course you are right ... and I am dead WRONG. But I have been ‘conditioned’ to live this way ... because of WHERE I live ... in the belly of the Leftist Beast. It would be business and professional SUICIDE for me to ‘come out’ where I live. Yes, I am a coward. But a coward for my children. A coward to protect the family. And I am admonished, by no less than Jesus the Christ, to not hide my light under a bushel. However, as I near retirement ... perhaps it is time to “come out”? Thanks for the deserv-ed kick in the ass.

Please don't 'improve' things too much.

Good luck!

Wishing you much success in your appropriately timed blog "Resurrection"...

Oh I'm not trying to kick your butt... my Facebook name isn't my actual name, though I do have some family that connects to it, it's mostly political rants and photos of someone's dinner (Robert W @ SDA)

Just try to not get cancer from your California coffee...

Other than again wishing you luck on a smooth transition, I only have one request of your new platform.

Please, please, please keep the anonymity!!!!!

I have no doubt that I am not the only SDA'er whose livelihood and/or business relationships could be jeopardized by 'outing' my personal conservative views. I have already paid enough dues for challenging leftarded in-laws, neighbors, etc.

Also, virtually everything about the Liberals that this very site has taught me tells me that anyone commenting pro-conservative views by name would be immediately put on a list and targeted. You would certainly lose me as a commentor.(ha, I can hear some cheering already)

As Kenji already stated, I have no problem in Kate or lance knowing who Canadian Observer really is(they already know from my personal emails), but my trust in humanity STOPS THERE.

At the corporation where I work they recently changed network file storage to "SharePoint". What a clusterfark. Files disappearing. Files not syncing. So not user friendly. Single worst roll out of an IT project I've ever seen. I know its not the same but may your transition go much smoothe Kate.

Looking forward to the new format but please use a easy form for comments NO FACEBOOK, TWITTER, DISCUSS and the like. Thanks, see SDA when you are up and running again!

And don’t forget, FB censors conservatives, we are not allowed to speak freely under FB rules. Fck FB

to Wordpress

Oh dear. I hope you're also investing in a ton of security extensions and a decent IPS. Wordpress is the most well-known and most commonly attacked platform, and You Have Enemies.

The whole code base needs to be burned to the ground and started over, but it's not a big enough customer base for MS to care. Having managed a couple of them, I'll say this: it's not a great product, but the quality of your IT staff is paramount.

You mean there's something worse than PeopleSoft?

The institution where I used to teach decided to adopt that package some 20 years ago. At first, there was a small group working to get it running. That wasn't enough and, with time, more people were called in. Eventually, the project needed more room and it started taking over lecture rooms because everyone working on it needed a desk.

I quit teaching about 5 years later and I'm not sure PS was working right when I left.

Similarly, my alma mater decided to use PS. I was on academic leave from my teaching position to finish my Ph. D. when that happened.

First, the graduate teaching assistants weren't able to be paid for the first month. Since many grad students depended on their TAships to pay their tuition, they received expulsion notices from the registrar's office. Fortunately, the senior administration caught on what happened to them and those students were allowed to continue.

In my university department, the secretaries tried to use PS to compile the B. Sc. graduation list only to find that the software went belly up on them. They stayed well into the night finishing the job by hand.

Rumour had it that the person who brought PS to the uni got canned.

The wonders of technology, eh?

If we are going to do the correction thing then (from JAB):

"All the best, I will be very disappointed if we loose one of the few pure pleasures left on the internet..."

Should be..."lose". A most common typo.

But no never mind. We all get the point.

Luck

My corporate entity also utilizes SharePoint, for document storage/retrieval. It’s been fairly adequate. But now, of course, it’s not good enough, we’ve been decreed to now move everything onto Google Docs.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

Google, in some respects, is a competitor to my employer. Why would we store sensitive documents on the server of a competitor?

Ditto what Lyn said! Stay away from the evil platforms. But I look forward as well to the improvements!

Time to hit the tip jar, the post-update tipple is on me.

Good luck!

My intentions were good, but PayPal insists I can only donate $0 without an account. The amount entry is greyed out and cannot be edited. I've done it this way in the past, but it's not working now.

Sorry, but I'll try again after the changes.

*Squeezes eyes shut, puts fingers in ears, holds breath*

Crossing fingers, wishing you well.

See you on the other side.

👍
Love SDA and hope all goes well for your transfer.

Jesus was "down" three days for OUR upgrade. It is finished and up to us now. No need for a password to receive His grace.

It could have been like this

Doesn't seem to be fixed yet

See you on the other side!

Looking forward to the upgrade with better commenting.
If it's Facebook plug in I will not be participating but will still visit everyday.
Great blog Kate.
Thanks.

Don't go with the Phoenix system. The feds can't get it to work. Probably have some consulting firm from quebek working on it...

Geez guys/dolls yur soundin' like were at a wake. Think Kate/Lance can't get it right? They're from Saskatchewan not Ottawa.

Blizzard raging out here at the trap shack today. Poured myself a big glass of red Vermouth topped off with Crabbies Ginger Beer (mix 50/50). A large slice of orange and yur ready for all the liberal bullshit the world can throw at you.

Nice to see all the usual suspects playing nice. If y'all lived closer I'd invite you over for a drink.

Go SDA!

Yup, that pretty much describes what it was like with PeopleSoft, according to the stories I heard.

At the institution where I taught, we didn't have many payroll problems but, apparently, trying to keep track of things such as departmental budgets was a major headache for support staff.

At my alma mater, I heard some moans and groans as well. When the grad students were left squirming for cash the first month of the new term, one of the uni's vice-presidents sent everyone a written apology and, quite properly, accepted blame on behalf of the institution.

However, it looked like enough bugs in the system were fixed by the time I finished my degree the following year because I had no problems with getting onto the convocation list.

When I heard about the problems with PeopleSoft, I looked it up on the Internet. There weren't too many complimentary stories about it. I also read that PS had been adopted by a number of government departments, both federal and provincial, at about the same time.

Soon after my employer had adopted PS, it scrapped a perfectly good working Unix system and replaced it with MicroSoft. It wouldn't surprise me if many of the PeopleSoft problems were related to it.

Will we be able to go back into archived material after the 1st of April? Hope this isn't an ignorant question. I was just reading the early morning comments from all contributors to S.D.A. on the day Trump won the election in Nov. 2016. What a hoot you all!

I had been watching the returns on T.V. that night and channel surfing till my fingers were cramped. The contrast from the lame stream media to Fox was freaking unreal! ....But you know all that...

So, does anyone know the answer to the above question? Hope to hear from you.

Thanks,

Nancy

Will archived material be eliminated from new surroundings on S.D.A. for readers?

Re- read some of your comments from past posts, they are great!

Yes.
