51 years ago today, the Rolling Stones made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Also on this day in history, the YMCA filed suit against the Village People. Can’t say that I blame them.

Damn. Mick was a really cute “kid”. And his voice distinctive, clear, and powerful. Don’t worry, that’s not a closeted comment … just an observation. No wonder the girls were screaming … and what a kool Chuck Berry blues classic with an impossibly young Keith Richards banging out the lead riff.
And the Stones were the “bad boys” of Rock … ha ha ha ha … compared to the Beatles. Because their mop tops were just slightly bigger and more tossled. Ah hhh to be young again … a ten year old kid with a tennis racket ripping up the strings like Keith

Re: Village People.
The YMCA were not successful in their lawsuit. They later settled out of court with Village People realizing that the song that sold over 40 million singles was free advertising for the Y. The song is still popular at sporting events. At the time, a lot of people rejected Village People’s alternate dress and lifestyles. Today, they would go unnoticed.
As for the Rolling Stones, if you could appear on the Ed Sullivan show, you had it made!!
I agree with Kenji. Ahhh, to be young again.
I’ll vote for this song as the best all time American recording. Bar none. Now if they can ever get rid of Donald Trump…………

That should read: The YMCA was not successful in suing Village People.”
I love The Rolling Stones, they stayed together because Mick is business-minded having studied at the London School of Economics. I read Mick Jagger’s biography and it is a good read with some surprising bits. Mick just had another child so an updated version is in order. The music got better once they hired Lisa Fisher and others as back up singers, think of song,”Gimme Shelter”.
Another 50th.
I heard on Thursday that it was 50 years since Otis Redding released “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay”.
Accused Edmonton attacker fit to stand trial; still undergoing second assessment
Saskatoon / 650 CKOM January 12, 2018 02:09 pm
EDMONTON — A man accused of attempted murder in a knife attack on an Edmonton police officer has been found fit to stand trial, but an assessment on his mental state at the time of the alleged assault is not yet complete.
Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 30, was in provincial court Friday to face charges related to a Sept. 30 attack outside a football game in Edmonton.
Const. Mike Chernyk was injured when a driver crashed through a barrier, got out of his vehicle, pulled out a large knife and began stabbing the officer.
Sharif also faces dangerous driving charges related to a speeding cube van that hit and injured four pedestrians a few hours later as it raced through the city’s downtown with police in pursuit.
His lawyer, Karanpal Aujla, said an assessment at Alberta Hospital, where his client remains, has found that Sharif is currently fit to stand trial…

Mick Jagger has always gone out of his way to acknowledge Blues legends like Muddy Waters whose sound helped form the foundation of Rock and Roll and incidentally where they found the name for the band.
It also helps that the Rolling Stones are astute enough to just play the gd songs and leave the politics to others.
‘Musicologist Robert Palmer attributed the endurance of the Rolling Stones to their being “rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music”, while “more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone’
Was never a Stones fan myself, Jagger’s tiresome mega-ego was always too much for me.
I remember the persistent rumors in the 80’s that Jagger was bi and that he was having a sexual relationship with David Bowie. Then this music video came out and all doubt was removed…

As for The Village People…. I remember EVERYONE gorging on endless gay jokes about these clowns, never once did I hear criticism that we were ‘hateful’. By today’s twisted PC standards, every single hetero alive in the 80’s was a homophobe.
Now that lobsters can’t be boiled alive but must be killed humanely, where does that leave halal meat?

While we are on the topic, these are my favourite Stones tracks.
“As for the Rolling Stones, if you could appear on the Ed Sullivan show, you had it made!!”
“Bye Bye Birdie” was on TCM about a week back. And there was Paul Lynde as Henry McAfee launching into the “Hymn for a Sunday Evening”:
“Ed Sullivan
Ed Sullivan
Ed-Ed-Sul-Sul
Ed Sullivan, Ed Sullivan
We’re gonna be on Ed Sullivan”
That was 55 years ago now. I couldn’t help thinking that there might be many people watching who hadn’t the slightest idea who Ed Sullivan was and why he was such a big deal.
As ‘The Fixer’ noted above the back-up vocals on Gimme Shelter are so powerful they ARE the song.
Exempt of course.
Merry Clayton was a background singer on the Track “Gimme Shelter”.
Pregnant, in curlers hers was a late night session.
You can hear at one point her voice breaks in the track…. and the producer leaves it in.
Absolutely brilliant move, still gives me shivers.

I don’t remember the Y being labeled as gay until the village people hung it on ’em. The song was a homosexualist anthem.
Today almost everyone is part of the village people.
It will be cool to see how they enforce this ‘compassion’ with the hundreds of non-human species that regularly tear to shreds and eat lobsters while they are still alive. Virtue signalling idiots.
I swear, the further ‘big city folk’ remove themselves from nature and survival, the exponentially more ignorant they become about all aspects of real life.

“Exempt of course.”
Then I’ll be watching the Maritimes for “Halal Lobster” in the markets.
Kate, I think you may have some dates mixed up as the first Stones appearance was in 1964. 51 years ago was when Ed Sullivan made the lads change the words to one of their songs from Let’s Spend the Night Together to Let’s Spend Some Time Together.
The second of the British Invasion groups after the Beatles to appear on Ed Sullivan Show was the Dave Clark Five who would appear on Ed Sullivan 13 to 18 times depending on who you believe but still more than the Beatles or the Stones. Most people remember the 60s as being Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones but in the mid-60s at the height of the British Invasion the competition for the hearts of teenage girls was actually Beatles vs. DC5.
Ed Sullivan was certainly a big deal. We only got a TV in 1962 and had only two channels (depending on the weather) Every Sunday my parents and I(I was 12) would watch his shew. Saw the Beatles, then later the Stones. I always was tense when jugglers or trained dogs were on because I felt embarrassed for them if there was a screw up. We were more focused back then fewer channels, fewer shows. As Bruce sang later in 1992, “57 channels and nothing on.”
Don’t forget that Bruce Jenner was in a movie with the VP, and look what happened to him.

There may have been only 2 channels but Sunday nights defined “must see TV” as if I remember correctly that was also the night that Bonanza aired.
Absolutely. The dancing Mick does comes from the style of James Brown and from home Mick’s dad was a gym teacher.
Absolutely! I turn up the volume… this is a favourite of the fans all over the planet!
Sunday nights defined “must see TV” as if I remember correctly that was also the night that Bonanza aired
Yup. Where I grew up, we had only one TV channel and it was a CBC affiliate which carried much of the main feed on Sundays. Ed Sullivan was on at 8 PM and Bonanza at 9.
Absolutely!…na na na….nana!

“Martel: The Value of Calling a Shithole a ‘Shithole’
In a news cycle full of poverty, war, political intrigue, and all the usual torment, America’s media have wasted valuable time this week debating the value of President Donald Trump’s use of a bad word.
Leftist journalists, politicians, and celebrities have scuttled out of the woodwork to decry that Trump allegedly branded some unspecified nations “shitholes.” The use of the term, they argue, proves the president is racist – and, as we all learned during the Obama era, all “racist” talk must be silenced.”

The shithole comment has been promoted by the media types. Gives them something to roll with.
The talking head on QR77 (calgary) went on ad nauseum yesterday afternoon. Sickening.
Anyone else offended by the implication in the PM’s response to the attack on the young girl’s hijab?
Trudeau: “We all need to remind ourselves that we are better than this.”
He speaks as though we all are somehow implicated or busy contemplating similar attacks. It reminds me of a teacher lecturing to an errant class that collectively had been throwing spitballs. In Trudeau’s world we are misbehaving school children who need to be kept in line . . . That is also what is behind M103. What a jerk.
The genesis of FISAgate, slime by slime. Will exodus better describe the fate of the deep statists, up to an including the ex-POTUS?
Well worth the read, a total setup from the start which the unethical media pretends never happened, indeed covered up; some tidbits:
“Anatomy of a Farce.”
(Glenn Simpson), the former Wall Street Journal reporter is a superb investigative journalist. More notoriously these days, he is the founder of Fusion GPS. It was he, in cahoots with his friend and collaborator, former British spy Christopher Steele, who orchestrated the compilation and dissemination of the so-called Steele dossier — the fons et origo of the Trump–Russia collusion narrative. We now know the dossier was covertly commissioned by the Clinton campaign, which dealt with Fusion through a layer of lawyers.”
See, Simpson’s got nothing. Even if we had not learned that the dossier is a partisan opposition-research screed, the Trump–Russia narrative it spouts is a house of cards. But here’s the thing: Good investigative journalists who dabble in partisan politics can be great at making nothing look like something.”
When Simpson wants to tell you about things Russian, he is encyclopedic, right down to the roster of “the Solntsevo Brotherhood,” Moscow’s most feared mafia clan. But ask him about Natalia Veselnitskaya and, well, he’s sorry he can’t help you — see, she’s not fluent in English and, shucks, he doesn’t speak Russian, so who knows what she was jabbering about?”
In his testimony, he made it his mission to abominate William Browder (of Magnitsky Act fame). Browder, you see, was the prime mover behind the case against Simpson’s client, Prevezon Holdings, a business he helped defend from a Justice Department forfeiture action. That civil lawsuit was relevant to the committee hearing because Prevezon has deep Kremlin connections. Not the least of these is the shady Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who was meeting with Simpson throughout the same June 2016 trip to America during which she met with top Trump-campaign officials (Don Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort). Veselnitskaya even shared some of Simpson’s Browder research with Team Trump — according to her convoluted theory, the information might damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign by dirtying up some Clinton donors.”
Meanwhile, Simpson and Steele decided that America was at risk, so Steele went to his friends at the FBI. Like Simpson, the FBI had already concluded that Trump was dangerously unfit and that Steele (who helped them on their FIFA soccer investigation) was an impeccable investigator. Interestingly, Simpson insisted to the committee that going to the FBI was Steele’s idea — that Simpson and Fusion absolutely did not contact the bureau. What Simpson conveniently left out was that Nellie Ohr, one of the Fusion staffers he refused to identify, was a Russia expert who worked on Steele’s project and just happened to be married to top Justice Department official Bruce Ohr. We now know that Ohr had personal meetings with Steele and Simpson.”

I believe it’s 50 years since Otis Redding died in 1967.
He had a number of great songs……most of them sad.
This song of his was very popular in Vietnam in 1969:

ah Mick and the boys.
a good opp here to make a plug for Brian Jones who actually started the Stones, but lost influence because of Mick’s dominating personality and his involvement with hard drugs.
it’s been said Brian could pick up a stringed instrument in the morning and have it mastered by the end of the day.
tknx for the link Kate, put yer hand up if you saw it live (on TV) like me . . . .
I detested the beatles at one point, with mcartney’s nonsensical juvenile tunes and the really weird stuff that showed up on the walrus album.
so then I would go home and plop my Stones LP on the turntable with the changer arm lifted and swung sideways so it would play over and over again.
I miss those days but I sure as shyt dont miss the poverty that came with them. jeepers, Im glad a lot of 60s albums are still in the archive, I just bought ‘Fresh Cream’ on CD for 10 bucks new.
p.s., speaking of Ed Sullivan (an exceptionally important ‘talent scout’ for a LOT of 60s performers: jeff airplane, Janis Joplin, Doors etc friggin cetera), does anybody remember the performing elephant that was doing a spin on a platform and juuuuust as it had its back to the audience . . . .

An anti-dote to the Cult. Marxist’s obsession anti-scientific epithets of “racism”. Ones they use to shut down rational discourse.
Followed by their demands to be the High Priests of virtue signaling = dictatorship.
The anti-dote to the irrationality of the left-overs is facts, scientific reason and rational arguments in public discourse.
Stephan Molyneux at his best public discourse on forbidden subjects.
This is what happens when you have a leader chosen from the ranks within.
That’s what happens when a party develops a personality cult. If the Liberals took a department store mannequin and named it “Trudeau”, people would still vote for it.
Come to think of it, isn’t that what it did during the last election?
