We Don't Need No Stinking Giant Mirrors

This is the story of Blind River and its hopes for solar power and energy riches -- dreams that turned into a financial nightmare.

The article mentions Harper and Conservatives a few times, but no reference to McGuinty and his Liberals who had primary responsibility for municipal oversight. CMHC should not write down the loan, the Ontario Government is responsible for it.

Let them suffer to teach others that elections have consequences. Back in the early 1980s many Alberta towns were going to get rich with big municipal subdivision developments. Butt-Head's dad killed the economy and many towns essentially went bankrupt. The Alberta government bailed them out. Big mistake.

Were they blind?

Blinded by the eco-light

What a surprise. No comments allowed.

But, but, but,
IT was FREE MONEY!!!

So the loan was structured on the basis of these solar panels would be generating $ 0.80/kWh income which is 7x the prevailing rate. Why? Was it on the promise of the green libs INCREASING power rates by government edict? By carbon taxes? Disgusting. That’s what happens when you take tainted $$$ from green thieves and LIARS. Talk about your Bernie Madof get rich quick pyramid scheme ... be the FIRST to build solar panels and get PAID by later “investors” in solar panels. Geeze.

Gonna keep on (solar) farming until the money is all gone.

😢

solar power in Northern Ontario... only a rent-seeker could think this is a good idea.

Blind River?? Wonder where it got it's name!!

A town of 3600!! I can just see the scenario when the fast talking promoters rolled into town.

A: They wined and dined town council and a few of the city fathers. (The same guys and gals that Jeannie C. Riley sang about in the song ''Harper Valley P.T.A.'' back in '68.)

B: Council and the Office of the Economic Development were talked into paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a ''feasibility study.'' (Did you expect that the people who had already lined their attaché cases with freshly minted 100s were going to classify your hare-brained plans under ''not feasible??)

C: Then came the EXPEN$IVE environmental impact studies to determine the ''what happens'' such as what happens to gopher and moles when they breed in the shade of a solar panel.

D: Then came the salespeople. Those are the guys and gals that go for the throat. It starts with a 5 million dollar project, then the delays happen, then it's 10 million, then 20 million..................etc. (Ooops, we forgot about the emergency diesel generation station that will be required when the sun don't shine.

E: Then, when all the enviro-mafia have fled and left the EDO holding the bag, in comes the media. The rest is small town history.

Good.
What did we learn??

Monorail,monorail,monorail..
Gang Green will leave this kind of ruin every where it has gained a foothold.

Yes, with some different options that is exactly the way a lot of rubes get taken to the cleaners.

GangGreen I could not imagine a more appropriate description for this Flim Flam show. Sounds to me that this whole deal was a project of the Green Energy Act, as a way of distributing taxpayers money to "deserving liberal supporters" and organizations/companies while blaming the Harper Government.

I learned a lesson here today. Looking at the 120 acre solar park that was planned for Blind River in the earlier stages of the fiasco, and according to USA figures, on average it takes 32 acres of solar panels for 1000 homes. Of course at lower latitudes the power generated by the photovoltaic cells increases. Blind River has approx. 2250 dwellings, thus the area for the solar panels is correct if you add area for industrial use.

Thus that means that a solar project for a city of 1,392,609 such as Calgary with 545,000 dwellings would require over 17,440 acres of solar panels. And I haven't calculated industrial requirements as of yet. It would take over a township (23,040 acres) of panels to complete the project. And what happens after dark??

Not a great idea.

the province may step in and handle their finances, yep, that should really improve things.

The key figure in all of this is Brian Guest, a key member of Bob Chiarelli's inner circle...Liberal money scammers

SaskWatch, I looked at the same sources. As best I can tell, the electricity produced is overstated by about a factor of four or five. 80% of production is lost on overcast or even slightly cloudy days. And they have to be cleaned thoroughly after every rainfall or snowfall. Rain deposits material on the panels which again reduces most of the electricity than can be produced.

Second, Blind River dumped a load of its borrowed money into Rob Bryden's waste disposal scheme. As just about everyone knows by now, that was a complete failure. It can be taken as a given that Bryden's history is that everything he's invested in has collapsed, leaving investors holding the bag.

What are you talking about? “We must destroy the environment to save the environment” is the credo of the eco-Left. When have they ever considered the implications of their orthodoxy ? They say ... so you have to go bankrupt to pay your power bill ... GOOD! they say ... another Capitalist consumer bites the dust! Yeayyyy !! *cough* *cough* *gaggggg*

wow. that is an exceptionally remarkable analogy.

'green' energy as a pyramid scheme. that's one for the filing cabinet.

oh yeah, Guilty Guest. I was going to say that. Probably getting advice from Soros.
stupid suncatchers & stupid pinwheels. I am sick of all the mob's "projects"
Another case and point. I guess no one cares about disappearing money if it's taxpayers money
