Even better – I don’t waste any more time watching the NFL. Frees up a lot of time on Sunday afternoons for sports, chores, reading, etc.
I’m sure the NFL thinks people will forgive and forget, but I don’t think a lot will. It took baseball 10 years to recover from their strike, and that was just over money. This ‘protest’ is an insult to every working class guy who scrimps to buy tickets for games, who buys jerseys etc. And so, those guys have just given up watching.

President Trump is now resonating with the American people, like nobody ever expected … especially HER. Just as I predicted Trump would be our next president the DAY he rode the golden escalator … because I FELT the massive discontent with our political class … I now f-e-e-l the resonance and downright admiration more and more Americans have toward Trump. He has survived the onslaught of vote recounts, fraudulent “rape” charges, groping charges, Russia nonsense, and the constant stream of leftist HATE spewed at him … on TV 24/7 … and on the internets. If I went to a restaurant for an entertaining evening and I got the drinks I paid for and the food I paid for and had the waiter harangue me with his politics the entire time I would never return to that restaurant because I would not be entertained, but rather vexed.
Traveling further with the analogy, if the restaurant was a famous roast beef(Mother Tuckers in Calgary) or steakery(the KEG in Calgary) and the waiter was a Vegan and ruined my evening by telling me about the cruelty and immorality that He/She felt I was inflicting upon Him/Her as a Vegan, well YEAH I would feel that my entertainment evening had been RUINED by that waiter/ess.

The horse is out of the barn. Everyone now knows exactly how those players who disrespected the flag and anthem, and thereby the Republic because that is what the flag and anthem represent, really feel about the Republic that have made them among the most well off 0.01% (I am probably overestimating that number)of all the people who had ever lived.
The players’ protest gained momentum from just Kap to whole teams, and from denying loyalty to the Republic to physically demonstrating to what they do owe loyalty. In a way, the fact that Cam Newton raised his fist in a Black Power salute after scoring a TD (and told everyone so just in case anyone missed the meaning) without reprimand is worse, because it was against the very principles they were supposedly demonstrating for. He showed he wasn’t for racial equality but black superiority. Any non-black who would still support the NFL after that demonstration says he is willing to be a second class citizen.
It isn’t nearly enough for the NFL to just enforce the rules they have always had but chose not to enforce. It won’t be nearly enough if it just apologized. The least it could do would be to suspend each player a game for each time he disrespected the anthem. If a team therefore cannot field enough players for the next game, it will forfeit that game. If both teams cannot, they will both record a loss. And Cam Newton should receive no less punishment than a white player would if the latter yelled the n-word against a black player openly. My guess is such a player would at least be banned for the rest of the season, if not permanently. If all that were done, perhaps the NFL would stand a chance of the fans coming back, but it would still be on probation, and it would still never be the same again.
