Merkel's G-20 Climate Alliance Is Crumbling
German Chancellor Angela Merkel had actually thought that Canada's young, charismatic prime minister, Justin Trudeau, could be counted among her reliable partners. Particularly when it came to climate policy. Just two weeks ago, at the G-7 summit in Sicily, he had thrown his support behind Germany. When Merkel took a confrontational approach to U.S. President Donald Trump, Trudeau was at her side.
But by Tuesday evening, things had changed. At 8 p.m., Merkel called Trudeau to talk about how to proceed following Trump's announced withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. To her surprise, the Canadian prime minister was no longer on the attack. He had switched to appeasement instead.

The whole EU is based on a facade of competence and unity in policy, to use an old expression,"a house of cards".
If it wasn't climate change it would be the huge number of refugees about to swamp the EU again this Summer, with the notable exceptions of Poland and Hungary,or the increasing financial failure of another EU Country as the whole unit staggers along.
Merkel and all Leaders have to understand that when they get an opinion or promise from Trudeau,he has to run back to his brains,Gerald Butts, to check if that's what he really thinks or means.
Let's hope the EU collapses under the weight of it's globalist/communist policies,and Gerald gets the message that following Europe is a recipe for disaster.
Then he can tell Justin what to think in response.

It was essentially that all G8/G20 leaders agree on the need to force electricity and energy prices to skyrocket. Otherwise there's carbon leakage where energy intensive businesses will simply relocate their operations to cheaper jurisdictions (eg. the Ontario experience ). Now that the biggest developed economy is walking away, the rest will eventually have to either adapt or accept the exodus of energy intensive industries.
Canada will of course be faced with this decision first because the US is our neighbor and biggest trading partner. Making Canadian businesses less competitive will lead to all kinds of job losses. Everyone but Quebec (where every industry is bailed out by the federal Liberals) will be impacted. Now that we know that the social licence idea was a crock of shit, why would we go along with the Paris Accord charade? Why spend/give away large amounts of taxmoney, hobble Canadian business and lower Canadians standard of living to support a now doomed non binding agreement that will have close to zero impact on global temperatures?

All true, LC. I can add that social licence was blown to bits by British Columbia. Rachel Notley did everything that could have been asked to that end, and she still had no approval by BC of TransMountain at the end of the day.
Rex Murphy was right. Social licence is nothing but a tactic for some discontented minority, no matter how small, to veto any project they don't like.

It was obvious that the social licence scheme was a scam when there was no guarantee of reciprocity. What kind deal doesn't obligate both parties to uphold their end of the bargain. If it had been a serious proposal then carbon pricing should have been enacted only after the pipeline agreements had been signed and all legal wrangling by activists exhausted. Once the pipeline construction started then so does the carbon tax. No pipelines, no carbon pricing.
