“Bad as that is though, the left takes politics to a whole new metastasized level. For while people on the right predominantly care about politics because it affects them, the left (and admittedly an increasing number of people on the right) obsess over politics because…
they have nothing else in life.”

Good points on keeping balanace in ones life. I admit there are times I spend too much time looking at political news on ZH but I spend zero time dealing with any MSM fake news source. I consider politics to be one of the most useless of human creations and my approach to it is tangential looking at the neuropsychology of propoganda and hijacking of instinctive human responses in getting people to “voluntarily” agree to things which clearly aren’t in their self interest. Also, I look for people who may not have my personal views but have the intellectual ability to reassess data starting with different premises and go with the logical conclusions. After reading that article, I’m getting off the internet and going to finish putting in my garden (late spring in BC interior this year).
Reading Enjoy the Decline left me with mixed feelings. If I was 40 years younger now, I’d be fine with this approach as my younger life was characterized by no future planning and being very lucky in improvising solutions to any crises I found myself in. Also, I’m no longer at an age when I can perform heavy physical labor all day and notice no side effects from it the next day. Thus, I have to perform the unpleasant duty of devoting a small amount of time to political issues daily given that they will have a greater effect of me now than 40 years ago when I had greater options.
Practical politics is another matter and that should take the form of activitely creating a more and more decentalized society. That means shopping locally, buying stuff second hand and creating local networks to find tradesmen where one can barter services. Growing ones own food and learning how to fix things will go a long way as the decline accelerates. Finding local people who have 3D printers, laster cutters and talking with them about decentralized manufacturing. If there’s a maker space in ones city, get involved with it as a SHTF scenario will mean making a lot of things on ones own. Also, making decisions about what people are worth dealing with and which aren’t is very important. Got rid of my credit card and pay cash only and no longer order anything from Amazon or any online retailer. Considering the tens of thousands of dollars I spent on late night shopping over the last 5 years, I’m likely stocked up enough on microprocessor systems and electronic components to deal with the decline.
A lot of young people today are hyperfocused on politics with zero background knowledge. This is likely the result of snowflakes being given the mushroom treatment (feed them shit and keep them in the dark). They are caricatures of the propoganda they’ve been brought up on an its clear that logic and using other sources to check what they’ve been told are abilities they will never have. They’re so sure about their views that any discussion with them is useless. Nassim Taleb continues to be a rich source of new ideas and he has now gotten to a stage where he looks at events in broad historical context. Humans haven’t changed much over the last few millenia and people 3000 years ago were just as acute observers of human personality types and modes of human interactions and pathologies of same. I view politics as one of the human pathologies and now, rather than conquering territory, the pudgy bureucrat psychopaths seek to expand their government programs or regulations to gather as much of the population as possible under their control in whatever arcane bureaucratic empire they are constructing. This constitutes true political pathology and I have fun fighting it by seemingly never being able to fill in a form correctly or utilizing logical inconsistencies in regulations to come up with logically correct interpretations which the lower level functionalities can’t cope with and have to kick the matter upstairs hopefully wasting enough bureaucratic time that they can’t dream up more ways of expanding their empires.
There was a time when I was actively involved in politics (when the Reform Party was being formed), but soon discovered that the whole political process was a sham to waste peoples time and making them think they could make a difference. The same deep state survives every time one appears to have a change in government and the meshwork of regulations and statist controls increases with every passing year. 25 years ago the the question in the Libertarian community was “will we have to shoot the bastards?”. Since then it has gone to “Is now the right time to shoot the bastards?”. Revolutions tend to be messy hence my slow move to become as independent as possible from the totalitarian state and making local efforts to find people that will go along with this strategy.
How does the old saying go ? “You may not be interested in politics, but politics is very interested in you”. … apologies if I garbled that one. I doth think the Captain protesteth too much, since virtually every post and podcast from his site is … well … political. This post of his falls into the category of either “bragging or complaining”. Quite obviously bragging. Not that I blame or scorn the Capt. for such bragging. His, sounded like a glorious weekend … beautiful woman lingering in a cozy bed, slow-food, road trip on motorbikes, cigars, ice cream with cute white children … what’s not to like ? I have had many a similar weekend … that truly make life worth living. But one can never enjoy the pleasures of life without the pain (or at least the mundane). Yeah, I am a right wing Drudge (and obviously – SDA) Troll … but my “political” activities hardly control my life to the exclusion of all other activities. I still have a very creative and satisfying profession that I love working at each day. I still like “fixing” things around the homestead, both mobile and immobile. I still hang with friends … and LOVE spending time with family. But I truly DO “get” the Capt’s. JOY … and am always glad to hear a fellow human is so content and happy. I neither envy or covet other people’s wealth … or JOY. That’s something leftists do. I smile broadly at the Capt’s. JOY. I also believe that EVEN the Capt’s. harshest critics … sometimes … have a “slap and a tickle” with their same sex or trans sex partners …
