We Don't Need No Stinking Giant Fans

Here's a quiz; no conferring. To the nearest whole number, what percentage of the world's energy consumption was supplied by wind power in 2014, the last year for which there are reliable figures? Was it 20 per cent, 10 per cent or 5 per cent?

No peeking.

I'd say less than five percent. Or "none of the above" if it is a multiple-choice quiz.

Agree with first comment. Hard to believe it could have provided 5% of world's energy.

My Dad was a lineman for a rural phone company back in the 50's. I remember when neighbours would phone him to repair Jacobs and other wind powered generators on his days off. Every household that had 32 volt DC power also had a gas driven generator to charge the batteries when the wind was zero. I also remember how we rejoiced when Sask Power brought in 110-220 Volt AC power that was generated by coal powered stations at Estevan and later Coronach.

As for %, I would guess less than 5%.

Less than 1%. Closer to Zero than to 1%.
P.S. My answer for something useful for the Turdeau cardboard cutout would be to glue solar panels to the back of it. It wouldn't do much, but it would do SOMETHING. Which is more than I can expect from Zoolander....

I am surprised it's that high. According to this website
https://www.eia.gov/electricity/annual/
the total is just under 5%. Click on Table 3.1.A to see total energy generated. Click on Table 3.1.B to see energy generated by wind. (I don't know why it's not separately listed in first table.) By the way, energy generated by solar is just under 1%.
Also, windmills generate a low frequency hum that disturbs sleep for up to a mile, and may cause actual health problems. Mining of rare earth elements (for solar panels) causes severe environmental damage, and untreated polluted water most likely causes cancer. Essentially the only country supplying it is China, which apparently does not care about "the people" on whose back the Communists rode to power. Relying on solar power, hence rare earth elements, does not make any other country "energy independent." Of course, everyone knows about the massive killing of birds and bats by both wind and solar energy generation.
Also, be aware that roof mounted solar panels have been known to cause fires. Those are usually blamed on "faulty installation", but the fact is, if something goes wrong with the power generation, there is no shut-off like a circuit breaker. Even if the panel itself is not at fault, it can make a fire much worse. The panels blocking the path of the fire forces it to spread horizontally, thus causing much more damage. The backing of the panels is usually made of flammable plastic. The presence of the panel makes fire fighting much more difficult. And the fire damaged panels will still be generating electricity.

To the nearest whole number zero.

Hey I was righ. Do I get a prize?

Having read the story now, 54GW is a)the installed capacity b) not even a drop in the ocean and c) possibly the amount of government subsidies receiveed by these fraudsters.

It's much less than 1%.
Worse still, this is a gross figure only and does not take into account power consumed by wind's own operational costs.
It does not include the power drawn from the system for off-line blade rotation which is a significant fraction of its total generation.

'the wind resource itself....... It’s a fluctuating stream of low–density energy. Mankind stopped using it for mission-critical transport and mechanical power long ago, for sound reasons. It’s just not very good.'

Yes ... wind contribution may be low ... but Jerry Brown (eco leftist Governor, Jerry Brown) scolds each and every one of you to CUT your Energy Use by 99% ... then, wind and solar will provide 100% of your energy needs ! Voila ! It's so simple. And to help you achieve your conservation "goal" ... Jerry has added a new cap & trade TAX, and increased gasoline TAX, and instructed the PUC to increase PG&E rates to punishing rates. Obama secretly warned all of you GREEDY Western Capitalists ... that you all need to get off your "high horse" of conspicuous energy consumption (oh, and ... your "high horse" of Christianity). Obama already warned that electricity prices would ... "necessarily skyrocket".

In a related story ... my local water company (EBMUD) just announced massive rate increases. Seems as though they have LOTS of water to sell now ... and want to gouge the ratepayer for all they can (before global warming ends all water forever in CA). This on top of the massive Bond (TAX) passed to create new water "infrastructure". Note: for the purposes of the eco leftists in the state of CA ... "infrastructure" includes non-stop advertising and "education" about water and energy ... "conservation".

As Ontario's lead hot air bagpiper could say: We're Wynnding! Thanks to all the stupid progressive fools that confabulated Canada's fossil fuel industries to effectively sink our nation's economies and put us out of contention for exporting energy to non-American markets. If there's a word meaning "traitorous idiot" these people define it. We're going to let Trump do all the real winning...

Right. there is nothing new or surprising about any of these figurer; they were well known and understood by Ont Energy planners before the McGuinty Liberals embarked on their disastrous road to wind generation. It was from the outset a political decision, egged on by green zealots like G Butts and others, a cost/benefit analysis was never even contemplated.
Any Ontarian viewing the construction of these behemoths could see from the size of the base hole, truckloads of concrete, tonnes of rebar and the size of the blades being transported..etc. The carbon print of 1 tower would greatly exceed any amount of electricity ever generated, even if they reached nameplate efficiency. Just a few figures of construction materials: The Can Cement Assoc. stated 800 tonnes of concrete for 1 base, add 45 tonnes of rebar. this for a large 550' tower.
But the Green zealots have successfully seized the conversation referring to these industrial turbines as "wind mills" and the Generating plants as "wind farms" For many urban dwellers this presents a bucolic picture of passive generated power with zero side effects. Tell it to those living next to one.
Even today Liberals are presenting vastly exaggerated claims for the share of Ont energy being realized by "renewable" sources. I don't hold out much hope for any real change as long as eco-fanatics like Butts, Trudeau, Wynne and others hold the reigns of power. One thing for certain, they won't be reading this article.

did ms wyynefarm read the report?
what? she can read?

So, it has been my humble observation that for many people hitting rock bottom is the only way to get self change. A few people who suffer from manic-depression it took being out of work, basically homeless to see a rock bottom and start taking meds and deciding to be a functional member of society.

The problem with post modern progressives is that they are taking themselves down with them, and bottom looks like a great place to be.

On topic, the great UT Professor Dr. Jordan Peterson was on Joe Rogan's podcast this past week. Well worth the listen

Heh, I was going to say - that sounds bogus, even 5 percent sounds way, way, WAY too high.

Then I looked at the article.

Just had a look at the Alberta AESO website detailing current electricity generation statistics.

Current Supply Demand Report

From the TNG (Total Net Generation) column:

Wind power is supplying 465 of 9001 total MW produced right now (about 5.1 %)

Coal powered generation supplies 4364 MW. (about 48 %)

Solar is not even listed, probably falls in the 'other' column.

Numbers are in real time and vary constantly.
