Hats off to Maxime Bernier!! From Sasaktchewan--go get em Max!!

Ooops--that was Saskatchewan!!

Bernier is from Saskabush? Geeze, when is this A-hole going to learn to speak English?
Tell me anyone, when ever was there a conservative leader who had never bothered to learn to speak English?

Well, he made it until the 28th minute without mentioning milk. Not that I disagree with him about ending the supply management cartels, but people are going to start calling him the milkman. The part at the end about Kevin O'Leary showed that this was filmed some time ago.

Any of O'Toole, Scheer, or Bernier will be a good leader, but they are all very different. My worries about Bernier are that he is not compelling in English, especially when he gets tired and is searching for words, and also that the Liberal media will resurrect the NATO-Hells Angels scandal thing. Rightly or wrongly, it will come back on him and look bad.

I should have written: ''Hats off from Saskatchewan--Go get em' Max!!

Jean Chretien capitalized on his accent. He was quite successful.

Bernier speaks English like Andrew Scheer and Kellie Leitch speak French.

Pop of Saskatchewan: 1,100,000

Pop of Quebec: 8,326,100

I had originally mailed a cheque to Scheer for my membership and in support of his campaign. The cheque and the envelope were stamped Mar. 24, four days before the deadline for voting in the campaign. Scheer's office claimed to have received the cheque ''too late'' thanks to Canada Post's inefficiency. However in the 50 years that I worked in the ag and auto industry, the post office stamp on a envelope was almost always considered the date that the payment was made. Scheer's office refused to accept that. So they returned my cheque. In any event, Maxime is my choice. And I doubt that Scheer will even make second place.

Looking forward to seeing Prime Minister Maxime Bernier...

The only politician that understands that consistent principles are a good thing.

I am not a party member so it doesn't matter but FWIW Bernier is my choice. I think he has more chance of electoral success than any of the others.

Another goddamn Frechman. I'll be sitting this election out.

When the current PM was elected he couldn't string 2 thoughts together into a complete sentence and people here are worried about Bernier's speaking style.
If Bernier is elected leader he will be hurt the most by the supply management thing; wall to wall coverage of Quebec farmers pouring their milk down the drain.

I haven't followed the Conservative leadership at all. It really doesn't make any difference who wins so long as said winner can beat Jr Turd and whoever the dippys choose to replace the beard with.

I already voted for Scheer first and Leitch second. It will be a cold day in hell before I vote for anyone from quebec.

On my masculine gorgeousness scale of one to ten with Rick Perry at "12" and men of French ancestry typically not registering, this son-of-a-gun is a solid "10". The quebecois accent is much more subtle and less nasal than continental French, and he says the right things. Good luck to him (so I can catch more glimpses going forward).

He is making statements based on solid conservative principles, and delineating policies based on these principles.
Get rid of the CRTC..... abolish capital gains tax...etc.
He has the stones to say things that are specific, knowing full well that there are those in our country (esp. in the MSM) whose heads will explode at the ideas he presents.
But he also knows that there are a lot of people in hinterland who agree with his approach, even if they have been denied a voice for 2 generations - their honest opinions buried under the juggernaut of a politically correct culture.
Sound familiar?????
As to him being from Quebec..... I thought that what rankled so many of the SDA crowd was the national obsession with assessing candidates based on where they were from. (That is what Jr tried to do to Harper). So why would we play that game, too?
Merit, not skin colour or province of origin is what matters. I understand the distrust. Mulroney was a source of that, but he was not as aware of the culture war that we are in as Bernier is. Mulroney thought tweaking a few things, and the rest being business as usual, was the way to go. Bernier understands that wholesale structural discombobulation is needed.
So far I like what I have heard, and I like the fact that he is already laying out specific policies rather than vague generalities. Remember when Jr was running for the leadership of the LPC, and he was asked about a platform? His response was that "Now is not the time to discuss policies. We can do that after the leader has been chosen." In other words - what is really important here is bling. Image. Posing. All those nasty details and specifics, like the economy, immigration, and security... those will take care of themselves. What is really important is to be seen at the right events with the right people. THAT is true leadership. In Jr's view, anyway.
Bernier is the opposite. He is already laying out policies, some of which he knows he will be attacked for, especially by the MSM. And he has baggage.
Again, sound familiar??
Many of you wanted a Trump north. You may have one staring you in the face, but you are too prejudiced to realize it.
This one has better hair, BTW... seems to be a factor up here.

I agree first timer.

i am skeptical of this man becasue he from quebec. but i will put him first and trost second or vice versa. trost is pretty awesome too!!!

I am a 42 year conservative/Reformer. I let my membership lapse as I was disgusted by the inability of the CPC to communicate a message to voters. Many of the Reform principals have been abandoned. Abandoned during the Harper majority years. The CPC returned to the top down management of the Mulroney years.

I like Bernier's libertarian fundamentalism. I like the idea that he will carry a message to voters. I cannot support an easterner.

At the end of the day I am a Western Canadian. I believe there is a basic split between the cultures of western and eastern Canada. This split is papered over by federal government spending. Canada has a frame work based on massive shifts of wealth to eastern Canada. A PM like Harper threatened this process and he was eliminated. What goes on in Canada will continue until a financial crisis occurs, which it will. Such an event will demand a clear understanding of how this country runs and I suspect it will break the country in two.

I am voting for Chris Alexander because I think he is a fine choice, and it is disturbing to seem him overlooked. I hope he runs again sometime (I am not expecting success this time). My second choice is Andrew Sheerer whom I like as an individual, and as I third choice I am tempted to put down Kellie Leitch as I do not want her concerns to be overlooked. As a leader she would be attacked mercilessly by the press and leftist, but it is not at all deserved. Her concerns are shared by many Canadians whose views are often shut down by unreasonable political correctness.

I do think Bernier will get it, and I do not mind him, but I appreciate the concerns of Westerners. Erin O'Toole also looks good and I think would make a decent leader.

Does anyone else see shades of Brian Mulroney when looking at Maxime? I'm not saying that's a bad thing but Mulroney did follow PT to two consecutive PC majorities. I just hope to heck that he cares much more about Western Canada then O'Leary cares about Quebec.

Liking what you hear from a politician... The one and only job qualification for a politician, is being able to figure out what people want to hear, then saying that.

If he is consistent, if he says the same things to everyone, in both languages, maybe I would start to suspect sincerity. Until then, where is the proof.

I just put Alexander into the dumpster, LindaL. And here's why. In this very recent release (below), he pats himself on the back for "giving western farmers marketing freedom", but in the same breath, supports "supply mangement for dairy and poultry".

"Our Party has always championed farmers & food.
Canada is today the world's 5th largest agricultural exporter.
We gave western grain farmers marketing freedom.
We secured market access in the US, Latin America, Europe & Asia.
China & India buy Canadian because of quality.
Lower taxes, research, marketing & exports will keep our farms strong.
Supply management for dairy and poultry is part of this strategy..."

So what are you Chris? An advocate for open and free competitive markets, or a supporter of a closed system that has no room for true competition. You look absolutely silly wearing those two hats.

Before the Leadership convention some thought should be given to the candidate that the MSM are endorsing. That is the candidate that should be avoided at all costs. On the other-hand it would seem that the MSM have focused their sights on Kellie Leitch, their criticism of her policies and trying to link her to WWII NAZIs, are an indication that they fear her and her policies. That should give some of you something to discuss over the weekend.

Go back to the 2016 US election. About 3 GOP candidates were not attacked. All the rest were. We clearly do not have as good a field as the Merkans did, but at least we have one or three.

Well said with great points.

It is important that we do not get Liberal disguised as a Conservative like Brown in Ontario is, or Palliser in Manitoba.

Problem with comparing us to the Americans is that Canadians do not have the same coverage as the American MSM. Global, CTV and our own darling CBC do not have the reporters that would be able to cover all of the 14 candidates here in Canada in a leadership race as the Americans did covering the Presidential race. Different magnitude of scale, in other words, Apples and Oranges.

However while on the topic of the Canadian MSM you have to ask why did O'Leary get involved so late and why did he step aside, could it have been that it was an orchestrated plan by the CBC to sway the vote in Bernier's favour. Like your example of three GOP contenders that were not attacked there are eight of the candidates in this race that have no chance so the media did not have to waste time or space on them, of the remaining five it was easy to pick out who would be the most harmful to the Laurentian Elite and who would be most beneficial. So if you are a CPC member and are going to vote consider where the MSM are trying to lead you.

This is not a problem for me. Alexander is not saying he supports completely unfettered free markets -- he is saying he supports Canadian farmers. In the case of the Wheat Board, some Canadian farmers were seriously disadvantaged in selling their wheat. In the case of the Milk Marketing Boards, I believe it is American farmers who are disadvantaged, so there is no inconsistency in his position. I think the same is true with poultry. If you support completely open markets, then you would not like his position, but a good case could be made that his position is supportive of Canadian food sources and farming.

And a good case could be made that has position supports the continued screwing of Canadian consumers.

Kelly Leeth won't be making thecond plathe. Theeth got a got a bad lithp, that's her downfall.

My choice was Andrew Scheer, however after dealing with his campaign staff, no way!!

And looking at the comments from Creepy Clown and Dano, I can almost see Trudeau giving out his victory speech in 2019!!

Every election, people like that fill the media with comments that the MSM associates with conservatism. (Gee, why do the polls drop!!) Thanks guys!!)

Speaking of the MSM, Trump's approval is now at 42%, the lowest in recent American history after 100 days in the White House! And that includes Nixon. I guess what you say in the media does make a difference after all!

The CPC needs to keep this election focused on two agenda items. One would be securing our borders and taking control over immigration. The second is fiscal management. The Liberals will try to muddy the water with everything from abortion to smoking pot.

I'm watching the three levels of government in this country spend their way to a train wreck. Trudeau, Wynne, Nenshi are going to bankrupt the country. I understand that Ontario already has some fiscal indicators that are worse than Greece.

Nenshi? Gregor Robertson in Vancouver is a bigger threat to city rate payers. He's a bought & paid for Tides (Sorearse) dupe & the Pembina Institute.

All Nenshi is doing is trying the tried & true - Olympics & new rinks for CNRL's "ice hockey team". It's questionable whether he'll be successful on either item.

The problem with Chris Alexander is that he is for increasing immigration to Canada. He mentions a figure of 400,000. That is unacceptable to me. We need to dial immigration and refugee entry back, not increase them massively.

He is also unelectable based on the Murti immigration fiasco. The media did a total hatchet job on him, and he did not help his cause. Personally I think his political career is over.

The mediocracy false narratives are already being prepared; don't expect this bunch to do anything but back their favourite Ken doll, the current PM:

"Bernier represents the libertarian wing of the party; he would abolish supply management in dairy and poultry (even though his own riding of Beauce has hundreds of dairy farmers) and end government subsidies for Canadian companies such as Montreal-based Bombardier’s aerospace division."

The Liberals would love to run against him on both issues in Quebec. Bernier also comes with baggage from his time in the Harper cabinet (particularly from his stint in Foreign Affairs), although he received good marks as small business minister in the last Conservative government."

Can he win the country? Not unless he puts some water in the wine of his platform."

"Bernier speaks English like Andrew Scheer and Kellie Leitch speak French."

Who gives a SHIT how or even whether Scheer and Leitch speak French.(as if the pepsis in Kee-Bake speak Fwench)

When Harper finally got a majority, it showed anyone who was paying attention that Kee-Bake was not necessary to get a Majority Canadian government(or less, the dumbass pepsis voted NDP) To form a real national Canadian government you have to beat Kee-Bake, not suck up to them.
Kee-Bakers HATE Canada.(and yet would be nothing without Canada)

Are you a troll or did you just discover politics yesterday?
I only ask because your understanding of politics is so 20th century and in case you haven't noticed, this is the 21st century.
The answer to Quebec is to simply call their bluff.
Get Onside or Get Out.(oh, and as a conquered territory of Canada, get out means GET OUT, we keep the land and you GTFO)

"The former is mentally ill, can't put words (or legislation) together no gud, and hates freedom. Trump's shtick is too rile up the yahoos by blaming problems on brown people."

I do not know how you expect anyone to take you seriously when you finish with such a completely idiotic statement. Your political views are not worth considering.

Hatchet job is right. The media has been very aggressive in going after him. The main "story" in this campaign was about his participation in the rally where "lock her up" was chanted. Presumably he was supposed to play the school marm and squelch the spontaneous (and harmless) chanting. This came from the Toronto Star, which is equal to the CBC in its championing of the Liberal cause. I think the leftist media has gone after Alexander deliberately because he could pose a real threat to Trudeau. He has been undermined, but he has intelligence and integrity. He will be back.

Re: ''Who gives a SHIT how or even whether Scheer and Leitch speak French.(as if the pepsis in Kee-Bake speak Fwench)''

Trudeau loves OZ!! You've already got him into majority territory!!

If your reasoning is right, then how did Justin defeat Mr. Harper in 2015??

Quebec elected 40 Liberal seats of their total 78. Only 12 were Conservative.

In Ontario, the Libs. elected 80 seats. The CPC elected 33.

Why would an English majority province elect a government led by a French Canadian??

Because they liked Justin Trudeau.

"If your reasoning is right, then how did Justin defeat Mr. Harper in 2015??"

Justin defeated anything? Really anything?
Harper QUIT. The very reality that Harper QUIT has Soured me on politics more than anything that I have ever cared about or thought or encountered ever. EVER.
(and Harper quitting is the best case scenario. that Harper was always the Dark Horse designated by the International Elites to KILL the REFORM Movement is the Worst case scenario)

...think that's schtoopid? Harper was born in Toronto, was in the political Liberal Club in his TO High School and he migrates west and SHAZAM! He's not only a Western Wonk who marries an Alberta Cattle Ranch Chick, but Stephie is an Author of the Alberta Firewall Letter while never DOING ANYTHING to implement it in any Western Province in any way.

Ponder This: If you believe in something or someone, and that someone has become the Leader of the Thing-in-Which-you-Believe and He turns out to be leading you and the entire movement off of a cliff as though he is the designated Lemming, ...but.... only HE has a parachute, and the rest of the Lemmings(followers) get to go SPLAT!!! ...well...My take is to at least STOP following that movement.

Am I a quitter? NO. I am in search of a new movement. Conservative movements claim to want a Big Tent.

F-That. Conservative voting citizens get DEFRAUDED on Conservative ISSUES because the Big Tent means Big Infiltration by Fake CANDIDATES who are Progressive, non-Conservative candidates who could not even pretend to be Conservatives except for the Big Tent BS pushed by the already corrupted Conservative leadership board. These people should be SHOT or HANGED.
...(actually Hanging's too good for 'em, Burning's too good for 'em, ...They should be TORN into Ittsie Pieces and Buried ALIVE!).../off Heavy Metal

Conservatives need to have Core Values, just like Progressives have Core Values that weed out non-heterodox politicos who seek to infiltrate and gain a seat for either personal or more probably partisan political gain by posing as a Conservative while actually holding or pushing Leftist political issues and gains.

Conservatives need Make-Or-Break CORE ISSUES that are Non-Negotiable like GARLIC to a VAMPIRE if a Progressive/Leftist were to try to pose as a Conservative.
These core Conservative issues MUST be entirely unpalatable for a Leftist and would make Progressives PUKE TO DEATH! if they pretended to be or work with Conservatives. And even if the could hold their cookies for one election, violating these CORE PRINCIBLES would get them TURFED out of the party and they and their supporters and endorsers would be BANNED or get a CENSOR for being non-Heterodox.

We've been losing because we aren't playing to win, we have viewed the enemy as being just a political opponent, but that view is so terminally wrong, so short sighted because we think the enemy just wants to win on a few political issues. The other side doesn't mean to just win politically. They mean to KILL US. They are the Champions, Minions, and Useful Idiots of UN Agenda 21 and losing against UN Agenda 21 means DIEING for people like you and me.

YOU and ME, DIEING. We aren't playing patty cakes here with these people no matter how innocuous their dupes are.

And believe me, ...I know some of their dupes are people you love.
