Your Moral And Intellectual Superiors

Canada’s AAA Rating Is on Thin Ice.

Fitch Ratings is warning that the country’s prized standing in the eyes of creditors may suffer because of protectionist measures proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. In a report Friday, a Fitch research team led by James McCormack wrote that nations with close ties to the world’s largest economy, such as Canada, are “most at risk” of damage to their credit fundamentals.

Oh dear. Let’s check what the leader of Canada’s pointy head sect has to say…

For forty-odd years after World War II, the policy of the free world towards the Soviet Union was one of containment: a strategy of collective resistance, rather than (on the one hand) appeasement or (on the other) open conflict. We now face the sad reality that, for the next four years at least, some version of containment will have to be our policy towards the United States.

What could possibly go wrong?

  1. The biggest risk to the cost of credit is not US unpredictability. It’s the prospect of an interest rate hike on all that debt combined with a ballooning federal deficit which will not be back in balance in this government’s term in office.
    It’s back to 1993 and severe fiscal restraint in our future all over again.

  2. The rentseekers need their ‘payoff’…hence the deficit.
    Remember the ‘budget will balance itself’ says the drama teacher PMO.
    On whose backs one wonders…?

  3. What are you guys worried about ? They have lot of options and ideas ! Capital tax , increase GST ( silly me I forgot – got rid of that one ) , small limited companies are only in existence to dodge tax , rich people have TSFA , will have to tap that and the 35% that have significant RRSP , don’ t forget the 1% , well let’s be fair the top 50 % . And don’t forget the massive turnover of inter generational wealth . You see it will balance itself! Carbon tax , well there going to give that all back . To whom?

  4. Andrew Coyne is trying his hand as a writer of fantasy fiction.
    The trouble is P.M. Justin Trudeau lives in too much of a fantasy world now.
    There is a reason why Andrew Coyne’s columns are not published in the Financial Post section.

  5. I haven’t read Coyne in years and thought of him as one of the more sensible opinion writers. But that was one crazy mashup of ignorance and paranoia.
    It’s not even worth rebutting.

  6. Andrew Coyne: The future, apocalyptic, dark, bleak, uncaring. 21 days of Trump’s presidency and that much is clear. Predictions, maledictions, knees shaking in fear, something warm running down his leg. His readers bleating in terror. Make it stop. Make it stop! The horror, the horror….
    It’s obviously way worse than we thought.
    Yawn.

  7. I’ve reached the point where that moron Andrew Coyne triggers nothing more useful than nausea. Will that a$$hole never shut up? Talk about Trump Derangement Syndrome amped up to 11. I suppose it’s bad karma to wish he succumbs to terminal apoplexy.

  8. The 30 cent dollar will look real good in the coming weeks and months but i am sure it will stabilize once china dumps hundreds of billions along with saudi arabia into our economy. essentially buying our country they already bought our politicians and immigration officers.
    And i am sure Trudeau will negotiate a smooth transition.

  9. Is it possible that Coyne has listened to ANY of Trump’s pronouncements or watched his pre-election rallies and listened to what was actually SAID? Is it probable that Coyne is a paranoid psychotic? And a deaf one to boot.

  10. Will Andrew shut up? Short answer is no, as after all, he is one of the main mouthpieces of the Laurentian Elite and its political wing, the Liberals.

  11. Andrew Coyne – gone ,or still, full retard.
    And for anyone that cares – I wouldn’t pay a nickel (since we don’t have pennies anymore) for any media this tard writes for.

  12. Trump Derangement Syndrome aside, Coyne is a driveling idiot when he talks about resistance. He seems utterly blind to the following realities:
    1. Canada imposing a carbon tax (interesting question about HST application which will have differential effects across the country) vs. US cutting corporate tax rates;
    2. The resulting increased disinterest in corporate investment in Canada;
    3. Because of the carbon tax, the increased uncompetitiveness of the Canadian economy;
    4. The US giving a tax holiday for offshore stranded corporate accounts, leading to a gigantic pool of investment money flowing into the US in a few years. No need for Trump to fish around to try to find infrastructure money;
    5. Some of that money coming from the Canadian banking system, forcing up Canadian interest and mortgage rates;
    6. The very real prospect of a Canadian debt downgrade I referred to above;
    7. Canada’s decreased military capacity (CF-18 replacement, military ships, etc.) at the very time the US is looking for greater capacity from its supposed allies;
    8. Canada’s weakened bargaining position with the US because of its refusal to permit Northern Gateway.
    Do I have to go on? The current government of Spawn has done just about everything in can to weaken Canada’s position vis a vis the US. And now this driveling fool Coyne wants us to somehow resist? This is as demented as David Frum two nights ago giving serious advice to the Left on how to protest effectively.

  13. For once the US is heading on the right track and Canaduh’s government policy is one of “containment”. Yeah actually the policy should be how do we align with the US’s thinking because they are about to become an economic superpower once again after 8 years of financial and societal destruction. What is it with this country and the US going in opposite directions all the time. Under Harper it was ascendant while the US was crashing hard and now it’s the opposite.

  14. Didn’t his sister boink the camp councillors daddy making him a first cousin of the failed drama teacher? No wonder he has a fatty for this dud.

  15. CBC brass must have laid down the law and told Coyne to make his National Post columns just as stupid as his CBC crap or they throw him off the CBC gravy train.

  16. With the ‘Shock Troops’ that were rushed down to the States in advance of Lil Potato-head’s sojourn into the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ I’m looking forward to the reports that will emanate from the MSM on both sides of the 49th. Probably the best thing that will come out of the meeting will be those two great words, directed at our PM, that a recently retired TV personality COYNED, “You’re Fired”. I’ll have to get more beer and popcorn this weekend since my supplies have been greatly reduced over the celebrations of the last three weeks.

  17. Maybe Coyne should put his underpants back on his head and light his ass on fire when he’s at the next Bilderburger summit, that should get the useless c##t some attention…. dude sounds desperate, typical NDP voter, all arrogance ignorance and intolerance… Why he writes in the NP is an utter mystery… Coyne should do something more useful with his time like trying to find his chin (I suggest he look in the CBC mens toilet) put his pants back on step down from the ledge and dream of his favs PM, Juthtins Daddy Peeair… Coyne needs to “contain” his useless leftist twaddle until the next election when he can “advise” everyone to vote for the Liberals or the NDP, just like he’s done for the last three elections.

  18. Isn’t Coyne related to Trudeau? Isn’t his sister the mother of Pierre’s bastard son/daughter?

  19. “To be sure, the prime minister has the particular task of dealing with a leader who, to speak precisely, presents with a variety of known personality disorders; who knows less about foreign policy, or any policy, than the average doorman or taxi driver; who has no visible moral compass, is unconstrained by any norm of personal, political or presidential conduct, and seems determined to avenge any slight to his monstrous vanity.”
    Hell! Then if this is true, they are, for all intents and purposes, twins!
    What Coyne didn’t mention is that the rise of Trump has presented turdo la doo with the perfect scapegoat. From now on we can expect the tit and his fartsuckers to point the blame finger south for any and all problems that Liberal policies have brought upon our shoulders.

  20. No he certainly isn’t related, this has been pointed out here before. His cousin Deborah was involved with Trudeau Sr and they have child together. But, one isn’t responsible for who one’s cousin hooks up with and anyway this has nothing to do with Justin and Andrew Coyne.
    Finally relations with Deborah and Jr may not be so great, she tried for a Liberal nomination in downtown Ottawa, failed and ran as a Green candidate in rural Ottawa, so she isn’t even a Liberal party member now, though she did run against Jr for the leadership.

  21. Coyne is the CBC’s idea of what a conservative should be. A Trudeau endorsing progressive who once in a while pretends to be one on their panel. Beneath the smugness and arrogance, his description of Trump has some grains of truth but could easily apply to the Spawn whom he helped inflict on Canada.

  22. Canada could solve its disputes with the US in a weekend. We give up agricultural marketing boards, they give up the softwood lumber fight, and we spend 2% of out GNP on defense. That handles pretty much everything.
    The results of a fight with the US isn’t going to be pretty for Canada.

  23. But if Trump is Hitler, shouldn’t we want to tear up NAFTA and everything else? We’re sending oil to HITLER, FGS, Mr Coyne!!1!!!11!

  24. When Trump alluded to all the Winning he may have included everyone… He may want Canada to win the huge number of refugees they want and will need to replace all the experienced Trades people heading south…The Manufacturing investment in Ontario that they don’t want, but Trump does… Win-Win… be happy
    Think of all those Hollywood elites living in (walled) estates becoming Den mothers to their favorite refugees.. They are the winners…Tear down those walls and share the pool. Happy..Happy
    Any truth that CBC has booked into the Bates Motel in DC.. Win Win

  25. That’s pretty well it, scar. And with Trump likely to give US industry and businesses a hell of a boo$t by getting rid of nonsensical environmental BS, Canada is pretty well anchored to the starting blocks before any actions are taken against our exports.

  26. Ordinarily, I would agree.
    But we live in far different times…some of Canada’s “esteemed” countrymen have kind of been a little…not nice to us…over the years.
    I’m afraid you’re going to have to throw in allowing us to burn down Ottawa (while you film your PM crying…think of it as good experience in method acting like a refugee, he should be non-mortally injured then).
    And then you will have to pay us a huge, er yuge, compensation for putting up with the likes of Bieber and Nickleback for you.

  27. Sorry, I was going to read the article and then saw it was by Andrew Coyne. Maybe he and David Frum have been sharing the same needle.
