Andrew Saxton: Trudeau’s carbon tax is all about ideology, not the climate or Canadian interests
http://business.financialpost.com/fp-comment/andrew-saxton-trudeaus-carbon-tax-is-all-about-ideology-not-canadian-interests-or-climate

Donald Trump’s surprise election has caused pundits, media and leaders in government and industry around the world to revisit their ideas and analysis. Everyone, that is, except for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who continues to call for a national carbon tax even if it puts Canada’s economy at a major disadvantage. The cost of this ideological rigidity will be in the form of less growth, investment and jobs here in Canada. It is time therefore for a climate policy that is rooted in reality rather than ideology.

Ensuring that Canada’s climate policy is harmonized or at least cognizant of the American policy is hardly an endorsement of President-elect Trump. There is plenty that Trudeau may dislike about Trump’s politics, policy and character. But personal feelings should not cloud the government’s understanding and pursuit of Canada’s national interest. Doing so would be the antithesis of evidence-based policy that the prime minister and his team regularly purport to care about.

Repatriation is a great Trudeau tradition, is it not?

In the spirit of the great Trudeau legacy, could we maybe REPATRIATE some of the $1.8B Canada gave to other nations for climate change? We could use it instead of putting tolls on Toronto roads, maybe. Or instead of...

Kate, I love the new header "On the extreme right of the historical political spectrum stand the American Founding Fathers. On the extreme left lie 100 million dead people.".

I've seen comments on a few other sites, and read some history about how and why the Nazi party was deemed to be on the right.

I hope I can do this justice: when we are talking politics and political movements in English, the National Socialists are on the left. However, in the original German, they are on the right. How does this happen?

Each culture has a history. The English speaking culture is unique in the world because of a single, transcendent moment: the Magna Carta. The basis for English conservatism is this moment in history when it was acknowledged that all individuals, including the king, are subject to the laws of the land. This is not part of the German culture. This is definitely not part of the French culture, else the reign of terror would not have occurred as it did. This striking, singular, game changing moment in time that forms the basis for conservatism in the English speaking world, does not apply to other cultures.

In the German the conservative voice is the voice of the land-and-serf-owning nobility. France had a rejection of the droit-de-seigneur during the French Revolution, but it was short-lived and the anger of the mob (rather than anything lasting). The idea of "the best amongst us shall rise to lead, so don't seek to limit them" directly lead to Napoleon and the fall of France because dictators just can't compete in the long run. In English history, the conservative view based their thinking upon the idea that the law applies equally to all. From this viewpoint the American founding fathers are being honest caretakers of a pre-existing view of the world. From any other European viewpoint it is absolute lunacy.

Where will this lead? God only knows. Hillary was the French or German ideal leader. Trump, as an anti-establishment vote, was the English ideal of "the system is broken, time for some fresh thinking to try to fix it.".

Can Trump fix it? I hope so. I'm not convinced, but he is light-years ahead of the latest version of the sun-god as personified in Hillary. I don't think he'll dive in headfirst in the way that Hillary would want the western world to do.

love your sarcasm.

I think the origin of the Nazis being on the right is their betrayal of the Soviet communists in 1941. While they where allied with the Soviets they were on the left. When they invaded Russia they became the mortal enemy of the left, so obviously they were on the right, where they have been ever since. It was the Soviets who first labelled them right as a result of this betrayal. Personally think the terms left and right have no meaning outside the French revolution.

Brent Louks is concern trolling on the radio, so it's a day ending in Y. Small towns got nothing to worry about; RCMP ain't gonna staff your town, unless there are guns to steal. So the small town bar thing is simply irrelevant.

Our beloved Liberal government practises transparency, unlike The Evil Stephen Harper, who was not transparent.

Great answer as to why Nazis are, in the progressive narrative, of the right. Sorry but fascism and totalitarianism are alike, conservatism and Nazism are not. But ignoring logic is part of Satan's rage, and a key weapon in his war against human happiness.

Most of the comments are overthinking the obvious. Lib-progs employ a variety of denigrating labels such as nazi, racist, bigot whatever-phobe to anyone who disagrees with them, or anyone they hate. Accuracy of the labels has never been an important factor to them.
