Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

RIP Leonard Cohen
Is this a bad time time to say I was not a fan?
I don’t always like Leonard Cohen’s work, either. But when he was on, he was on. And this version of “Hallelujah” is spot-on. Same with Bob Dylan – liked some disliked some. But both had great talent.
He was proof that you can fool most of the people nearly all the time. Hype breeds hype. Another legend in his own mind. One less self absorbed leftist.
I never got Cohen. Guess I use the left side of my brain.
Good G&M article on spud today. He has proffered up a renegotiate of NFTA as a peace offering to Trump. He put himself into this position because of his foolish comments and the governments overt support for Clinton. Someone now has advised him that Clinton lost and spud will have to deal with Trump. Trump knows that the fool and all his cabinet backed Clinton.
Yeah, he’s ready
“Is this a bad time time to say I was not a fan?”
No. But I got laid while playing the only LP I had by him. Got my wick wet … so I kinda like him.
I guess you’re proof that morons can type. Go fu*k yourself. Your kind of stupid is why conservatism fails. Let me know when you die. I’ll gladly piss on your hyped up neanderthal grave.
Well, knowing the actual definition of the word “Hallelujah”, i.e. “Praise the Lord”, as opposed to just the title of a pop song, I thought this blog entry would be announcing the death of George Soros or someone of equal merit.
I find Cohen’s songs to be of a more peaceful nature than Bob Dylan’s songs. I think they gave the peace prize to the wrong guy.
Here he covers the Tennessee Waltz.

Go back to the Huffing and Puffington Post (Canada) whine fest.
As stated above I never got Cohen but the marketplace sure did. He was very successful over decades/generations.
He was an entertainer Bo – don’t read too much into it.
The documentary A Perfect Candidate had this song by him over the closing credits:

I’m sure it wasn’t coincidence that Turner Classic Movies showed it on Monday night.
I think they gave the peace prize to the wrong guy.

Thanks for featuring Leonard Cohen.
This was one of his early songs. I remember years ago, I watched a documentary about the woman who inspired this song. She was a French Canadian woman from Montreal. I would love to see it again.

This is my favourite Leonard Cohen song, although truthfully I don’t know that many. His version is alright, but I prefer a number of other interpretations. The second verse wherein David is smitten by Bathseba’s beauty is the line that hooked me, because it always reminds me of how I felt when I first saw my now late partner. Meeting her was my Halleluah moment. We had five years together before she suddenly passed away.
No thanks, Len Dunham: Canadians tell celebrities to stay home
Don Cherry tweeted, “The left wing kook entertainers and the left wing weirdo’s in the media in the US have said if Trump wins the presidency they will move to Canada. Please, we have enough of these type here now.”

The comment should have read Lena, not Len.
Not sure about Cohen. I never really got into his music. However, he was an artist and may he rest in peace.
KD Lang’s rendition brought me to tears at the the Vancouver Olympics
Yeah, Cohen was artsy before artsy. Same as the rest, didn’t get him, but of course heard Hallelujah (in the Watchmen, apropos), and that Manhattan/Berlin song. Otherwise, meh. Like Dylan much more, at least Dylan had a sense of humour and was a song and dance man.
Suzanne…. AND HE COULD NOT HAVE HER!
That hurts….. good tune.

One of the upsides of the Brexit vote is that at least people in Britain will get bread properly toasted in energy-inefficient toasters
A few months ago the European Union proposed regulations to increase the energy efficiency of small appliances like kettles and toasters, hoping to save 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. But this was just before the Brexit vote, and it became a cause célèbre for anti-EU UKIP members. One member of the European Parliament said “ he wants the UK to leave the EU because his toaster repeatedly produces rubbish toast.” …
Now, the EU has quietly dropped any effort to regulate energy efficiency of small appliances.

I’ve been a fan of Cohen for decades. Some of his stuff wasn’t so great but he had a lot of great songs.
If I had to choose a favourite it would be Closing Time.

Forget not, that brave Canadians are fighting and dying for Liberty on foreign and on native soil. This war is not yet won. Here is one Canadian soldiers story.
———————————————————————————-
A secretive unit of international veterans went on its first anti-ISIL mission last fall. Hours later, a Canadian was dead- Stewart Bell
“Krsnik and Carder’s son, John Robert Gallagher, were both in the 223. Both were also veterans of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. But only one of them made it home alive, which was why Krsnik had to visit Carder, to tell her how her son had died.
When a motorcade brought Gallagher’s body home last November, hundreds lined overpasses along Highway 401…”

The look of that person near the end of the Bill Maher clip (in which Ann Coulter predicted Trump would win) is absolutely priceless.
One reason that all this eco-mania comes across as so much malarkey is that most people can’t relate to it.
Who cares about whether a toaster saves x many tonnes of carbon? Tell them how much electricity it’ll save them–better yet, how much less it’ll cost to run it. That’s what people see every day and it’s something they’re familiar with.
Describing things in terms of carbon makes the whole issue nebulous, thereby affecting the credibility of the discussion.
Then again, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. Most of these eco-maniacs, members of the Khmer Vert, think that they’re so much smarter than everyone else. Worse, they think that no one else others than them could possibly understand the matter.
I couldn’t care less about things about a toaster except how it makes toast. If it costs me 1/3 of a cent more for 2 slices of well made toast – so be it.
Who cares about whether a toaster saves x many tonnes of carbon?
Exactly!
I want two slices of browned toast, not warm dry bread, and not two slices of carbon.
That’s the only way I relate to carbon regarding my toaster.
I couldn’t care less about things about a toaster except how it makes toast. If it costs me 1/3 of a cent more for 2 slices of well made toast – so be it.
As others have echoed – sorry for the double post … it said I timed out.
I first heard Leonard Cohen in an English Literature lesson at school, they played us “The Dealer” and then we had to analyse the lyrics. The strange thing is that I bought and read his novels and poems then rather than his music. I started listening to him again when I was in college and saw one of his albums in the window of a record shop. He’s been one of my favourites for years now, along with Richard Thompson, and though he could be (especially in his earlier years) as pretentious as anyone, he certainly knew how to write a tune and his lyrics can be works of literature in themselves. He was also an electrifying live performer.
many people forget that he started his career at 17 in a country band, the Buckskin Boys, which he formed and throughout much of career the best of his songs were based on roots music and old songs like “The Tennessee Waltz.” Personally, I thought that his creativity took a downturn with his later use of electronic instruments but he was still the same man.
His death came as no surprise to many of us. Although he was a philanderer, there were at least two women who played a vital part in his life, Jennifer Warnes and Marianne Ihlen, who he loved in his younger days and then deserted. Marianne and Cohen never fell out of love though and recently the story of his letter to her on her deathbed became quite famous, in which he promised that he would not be far behind her. He recently released his final album and a single with it, “Do You Want it Darker” which not only referenced his Jewishness but also contained his repeated plea, “I’m Ready My Lord.”
Leonard Cohen, a small light, for a time, in the darkness
If you are the dealer, I’m out of the game
If you are the healer, it means I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame
Rest in Peace Leonard… I have to say that I love Leonard Cohen’s music, IMO he was a genius. Sad to hear of his passing but glad he lived a long life (relatively speaking) Loved that NFB documentary on Leonard shot in Montreal during the 60″s when Quebec was still English, look at all those English signs. He was a talented Canadian from a Canada that no longer exists… I recommend the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah, ( Tim Buckley’s son) really beautiful. I can also recommend watching Cohens set at the Isle of Wight concert back in the 70’s… Cohen played right after Hendrix and right after the stage had been set on fire and then put out… Its a wonderful set of music featuring a band of awesome Canadian musicians. So many great musicians/artists lost in 2016… thanks for the music Leonard… God bless… RIP.
Aagh, it’s called “The Stranger Song” not “The Dealer.” In my defence, it’s about a dealer (as in gambler)
It’s true that all the men you knew were dealers
who said they were through with dealing
Every time you gave them shelter

“The German Army Marches Through Brussels, 1914”
“The German army moved into Brussels as smoothly and as compactly as an Empire State express. There were no halts, no open places, no stragglers. For the gray automobiles and the gray motorcycles bearing messengers one side of the street always was kept clear; and so compact was the column, so rigid the vigilance of the file-closers, that at the rate of forty miles an hour a car could race the length of the column and need not stop – for never did a single horse or man once swerve from its course.
All through the night, like a tumult of a river when it races between the cliffs of a canyon, in my sleep I could hear the steady roar of the passing army. And when early in the morning I went to the window the chain of steel was still unbroken.”
“More Uhlans followed, the hoofs of their magnificent horses ringing like thousands of steel hammers breaking stones in a road; and after them the giant siege-guns rumbling, growling, the mitrailleuses [machine guns] with drag-chains ringing, the field-pieces with creaking axles, complaining brakes, the grinding of the steel-rimmed wheels against the stones echoing and re-echoing from the house front. When at night for an instant the machine halted, the silence awoke you, as at sea you wake when the screw stops.
For three days and three nights the column of gray, with hundreds of thousands of bayonets and hundreds of thousands of lances, with gray transport wagons, gray ammunition carts, gray ambulances, gray cannon, like a river of steel, cut Brussels in two.””

What’s true with the toaster thing is true for so many ‘green’ initiatives.
Toasters that require double toasting. Toilets that require 2 flushes. Diesel trucks that require constant repair because the particulate filter won’t work or the DEF screws up.
Today efficacy and common sense has taken a back seat to ‘good intentions’.
I would rather have a toaster that works properly as well and I’m willing to pay to have it do so, even if it means more electricity might be required.
That’s where the Khmer Vert failed miserably. They don’t understand that. What they’re telling us is a different version of what Potato Head’s daddy told us during the recession of the early 1980s: “Lower your expectations.”
OK, fine, sacrifices may have to be made, but how come the KV elitists are let off the hook? Shouldn’t they have to put up with under-performing toasters and luke-warm coffee like the rest of us? Oh, yeah–they’re supposed to be our betters, aren’t they?

Russia says it was in touch with Trump’s campaign during election
MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Russian government was in touch with members of President-elect Donald Trump’s political team during the U.S. election campaign and knows most of his entourage, one of Russia’s most senior diplomats told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.
But in comments that could prove politically awkward for the president-elect, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there had indeed been some communications.
“There were contacts,” Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying. “We are doing this and have been doing this during the election campaign.”
Such contacts would continue, he added, saying the Russian government knew and had been in touch with many of Trump’s closest allies. He did not name names.
To give credit where credit is due, I first came across the expression “Khmer Vert” while reading this website. Some other contributor came up with that one and I doff my chapeau to that person.
I also like “Gang Green”.
