Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

By the time this EV scheme starts to click into place there are other factors quite likely to come into play, IMHO… private EVs will be for the several hundred million very wealthy people on the planet who will own everything including the government, and their “middle class” supporters who will pretty much all be government employees. The rest of the impoverished population, tax-slaves, outside of the wealth-government faction will be using public transit, bicycles, walking… so there will be a lot less private vehicles by the time the switch to EVs is complete. That’s if all goes according to plan, fortunately there’s the Brexit, Trump sort of activity throwing wrenches into the gears. Sorry for the post, just indulging in my perception of the historical drift…
Come to Ontario where the Premier is a huge fan of electric cars. She’s offering up big bucks to any person rich enough to buy one. I’m sure she has researched the matter thoroughly and has all the answers, just like she has all the answers to the mess she has created with her green shit energy schemes.
Euan Mearns’ analysis is a good one. The specific digits don’t matter much; this is about orders of magnitude. However, the study (and the EU strategy) ignore truck transport which constitutes up to half of total vehicle fuel consumption.
To my knowledge, there’s no battery/electric motor combination capable of moving at 40 tonne transport truck. So even if the EU’s fantasy becomes a reality in some bizzaro-world, it will not eliminate fossil fuel. It will at most cut it in half.
Electric cars fill the needs of virtue signaling idiots, no one else.
The sheer stupidity of these Eurocrats is beyond measure. Coming to a province near you. Thanks, Notley, Wynne et all.
Wynne’s Ontario has entered into the bizzaro world.
Ontario Electrical Code now requires all new residential houses to have electric vehicle charging in garages.
So now we can all live like retirees, with a golf cart in the garage. Just don’t let grandpa get near that “insane” driving mode of his new $ 130k Tesla cart … or he’ll put the thing through the supermarket storefront.
Can you offer a citation to substantiate the statement, please? Not that I am doubting you, but it does raise the question of what a charging station has to do with public and private safety concerns which is the primary focus of an electrical code. Mandating this kind of interference smacks only of an agenda, not realistic public safety concerns.
Yeah,
would say that most of the population thinks that the power comes out of the plug, as in
you put a receptacle on the wall and there is the power.
See how that works?
Generation build out is a small fraction of the cost. Transmission and distribution upgrades are several times more expensive.
The legal load on a super B is 60 ton of grain. Where does 40 ton come from?
Yes, the article supposes that us ordinary peasants will still be driving any type of vehicle, when the object is to get us OUT of PV’s and into public transit.
That will go over well in tiny, crowded Europe, not so well in the vast open spaces of North America, unless we don’t mind not going anywhere except by the sacred bicycle.
This article incidentally points to another example of the control the Powers That Be intend to exercise over “the masses”.
What kind of Green Hell are we headed for?
Never mind how much electricity…How much ‘precious metals’ would it take to make these 500 lbs on a massive scale?…the whole thing is a pipe dream. Tesla has taken the battery technology (Also see Samsung) beyond it’s safe/reliable margins (Catches fire).
The battery powered car (A much better description than “electric”) is and will always be inferior to good old petrol.
A Trump win (He will with a landslide) will signal the beginning of the end for these insane ideas.
Several years ago, I read an article about how someone took an old used car, took out the engine, and converted it to battery powered.
That would be a rather neat project to try.
I live in a part of the city where most of the places I have to go to are within walking distance, located near major public transit routes, or easily reached by bike.
I don’t have to drive anywhere in the city unless I’m in a hurry or I have to haul something that I can’t carry or put in my backpack.
It can be inconvenient sometimes, but, on the other hand, I don’t have to fight traffic or worry about parking.
But, of course, there is a solution for that ! The government is also passing an Electricare mandate. This new law provides that children living with their parents (up to the age of 27) … will have their electricity paid-for by mom and dad. So the c-h-i-l-d-r-e-n will get FREE electricity ! to go along with their FREE medical, FREE college, FREE abortions, FREE childcare, FREE cell phone, FREE … FREE … FREE …
A typical 18 wheeler is 20t, is it not? Add cargo of 20t and that’s 40t. We’re talking averages here across an entire continent’s truck fleet. Fact remains, there’s no battery/electric motor combination which will move that.

That’s nice. I live in the country where most of the places I go to are half an hour or more away by car. The only thing within walking distance is the next door neighbor, about half a klick. I -could- bike to the nearest store, about three miles, but I’d most likely get killed on the highway.
Talk to me about electric vehicles when the temperature is -27C and the battery is delivering about 1/4 of its rated capacity.
Oh yeah, and the wind don’t blow when its cold.
At this point I very much doubt there’s going to -be- an EU in 2025, or that Germany will exist under its present constitution/government.
But if you want to know how much electricity will be needed, just take the amount of fuel sold in Europe every year, then do the conversion to watts and add 35% inefficiency tax because line loss and battery energy density.
Then divide by two, because half the population will have either frozen in the dark or died in the wars.
He didn’t do a calculation for how many bird blenders you need to increase grid capacity by thirty percent and how much real estate that would require.
Can someone explain to me WHY every GIGANTIC propeller blade in the sky has to be painted WHITE ? Couldn’t the Federal government at least make them paint these stupid things in camo. colors ? My local community makes me paint all my hillside houses in DARK colors so they are less visible from offsite views. Less “offensive” to the neighbors. Why the hell do I have to have my eyes assaulted by these Fugly contraptions littering the formerly pristine landscape.
I know all about the necessity of having a motor vehicle on hand when living in a rural area. I lived in a small farm town in the mid-’80s. The nearest place of any size was a half-hour’s drive away along the highway.
Most people wouldn’t need to use their cars in the city near as much as they do if they plan their trips properly.
I used to live in the city, and depending on where I was working at the time, my car would sit idle for weeks at a time. I went everywhere by bike. It wad faster and way less hassle.
I thought you were talking single axel. Like maybe a 68 GMC with a load of oats heading to the P&H elevator. I think that would be around 40 ton….or 40 something in metric.

That would be Saint Neil
Out here on the trap line I’m 45 miles to the nearest store. I bike it (Harley) to the store in the summer when I’m getting low on gin.
I haven’t heard that Harley is testing a battery bike… but who knows?
That’s easy. 419 GW is a minimum of 419,000 wind turbines. Typically they are assumed to be 1 MW apiece, though modern ones are now about 3 MW. But they don’t run at 30% capacity, more like 20%, so add half again or a total of about 600,000.
So will it be known as the Turdeau 2 or the Wynemobile?
For sure we will see the creation of the made in Canada Electric car, where massive amounts of taxpayer (borrowed) funds will be cycled through a very Liberal Creative Company .
Where in most the funds will be paid out on excutive salaries, consultants and all the normal ways these “political startups” steal.
Leaving in the end, some empty buildings and an endless endowment to well connected Liberals.
Working for the taxpayer.
Ain’t kleptocracy grand.
I went everywhere by bike. It wad faster and way less hassle.
Yup. Going by bike gives me a lot of flexibility as well. I can take all sorts of trails and paths which get me around a lot of traffic bottlenecks plus I don’t have to tangle with moving vehicles.
Wouldn’t that be something if we ran short of power after all the cars are powered by electricity, and we’d have to use gasoline powered engines to turn the dynamos. I can just see see the sign!! ”Powered by Ford V-8!!”
Idiots–all of them!!
Watch this 460 Ford V8 light up!!

Actually, it was an article in the do-it-yourself magazine Home Power roughly 15 years ago. The author took an old car that was either ready for or obtained from a junkyard (a VW Rabbit or Golf, I think), took out the entire drive train and replaced it with a heavy-duty motor powered by a bank of lead-acid batteries.
It was a rather interesting project.
Random Sat AM thoughts…
Electric Vehicle …USELESS Stoopidity…! Hm, maybe they will off-gass, catch Fire..?? or something and Annihilate their owners…?? yea that would work for me. ! We could only hope the first victims would be the complete F’n MORONS in our Poilitical system…Notely, Whynne, Trudeau and his pupeteers, HildeBeast and each and Every EU, UK, Scandinavian Head of State…..Marxists the F’n Lot of them.
I guess its somewhat apparent that I have pure unadultered HATRED ….?? for the above mentioned (_i_)Holes
The bottom line is this…
NO ONE will have the money to buy one of these $50k+ EV’s…only the Rich. Particularly in a world of dissappearing job security and diminishing job propspects.
The ONLY way to provide Baseload POWER is NUCLEAR and i simply cannot see said Greenies endorsing said power source….evah..!
In the end I see it coming that they (those that control things), will in the end and not too distant Future simply OUTLAW ICE Vehicles….the IDEA Most likely emenating initially from Gregor Robertson…the head LOON in YVR..
A such, I challenge those in AI-Tech to build us a virus that will target Climate Change proponents and marxists….once built..? Puleeze UNLEASH IT..!!
In the Meantime…whenever I see a Smart Car…I put my D’max w/ EFI Live into its Hi setting…punch it and for an instant dream its disappearing permanently. With Luck, the driver will be a “metrosexual”, Feminist SJW – Climate Change acolyte with a Degree in Gender Studies driving said joke of a vehicle… One can only hope..?
To all of them I say: Up yours.
You’ll need to pry my Diesel powered Truck from my cold DEAD hands…
Good point! I have long wondered where all the infrastructure will come from
since we have not built one net new power plant in about 40 years. One cannot
one the one hand conserve ones way to “Energy independence” while at the same
time adding a massive load!
First of all it’s highly unlikely that any jurisdiction will ever go 100% EV. This is a logical fallacy known as reductio ad absurdum, ie. taking something to ridiculous extremes. It proves nothing, but it does inflame emotions as @Steakman has so graphically illustrated. I also drive a diesel truck and I’ll never have problems finding fuel for it. An electric vehicle isn’t practical where I live, but consider cities like Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria with mild climates and abundant hydroelectric power, and EVs clearly have a niche to fill. Delivery companies are already finding them to be a better option than petro-fuel for some of their fleet.
Ultimately the market will decide just like it did years ago when limited range, limited load vehicles that were totally impractical in Canadian winters were introduced. EVs are as impractical as motorcycles and subject to similar market forces and we all can see what a marketing failure motorcycles have been.
