Last time we did that our economy nearly imploded in debt, as Chretien continued to borrow, borrow, even as a mini boom was beginning following the deep 1991 recession. Inflation was at 8% and mortgage rates were over 11%. Once profligate government was brought somewhat under control, things improved quickly, and Mr Harper continued the steady tiller at the hand until the statist hounds were unleashed on us.
A debt death spiral was averted by the intervention of the Preston Manning & the IMF in 1995, forcing tax increases on middle income Canadians. Taxes went down, governments limited themselves and we climbed out of the hole, and government debt fell under 100% of GDP 2007. The most recent deficit run up was brought to balance, but now this new government debt train is off the back burner with soon unsustainable spend & borrow policies, in a lower growth economy with aging boomers able to vote themselves what they wish.
This presents alarming possibilities for a substantial haircut in our standard of living as statists bleed small business to death while they continue their ignorant conceit they can manage or ultimately stimulate economies, especially when considering the opportunity cost.
Then again, it’s not their money is it? In the long run they destroy more jobs than they could ever create for pitiful short term stimulus of Laurentian Grifters, washing the feet of the QC and Maritime voters for free stuff from the West. ON feels unloved lately but their voters were nice enough to play the decisive card in the last federal election, consigning us all to their loony Wynne Lose perma deficit tragic comedy.
The hangover from the mostly Trudeau and somewhat Mulroney debt have hamstrung economies every since. Debt services charges on the order of $30b/yr and climbing seriously hamper government ability to service their programs and deal with contingencies. That has not been solved; now we’ve been launched on the Trudeau II OPM statist debt cruise.
