4. I wonder, however, if this is quite as egregious as the article says. I would like to see the breakout of the total tax bill for the money that Cam earned for the big game. That is, all federal, state, and local taxes that were assessed, and the real marginal rates for each of those taxes.
   It’s hard to believe that California could get away with such confiscatory tax rates unless there were some offsets and deductions laying about that reduce the overall impact.
   On the other hand, taxes in California are simply awful! They were bad when I left there some 30+ years ago, and are far worse now.

5. Its a wonder the NFL players union doesnt protest more. All the big money around the NFL usually dictates what the NFL wants.

6. I don’t know how California taxes athletes nor do I want to know. Their tax on athletes only works because not many other states reciprocally tax California athletes. They should. Cam Newtons problem was that he played no games in California in 2015-16. Playing the Superbowl there must mean he was taxed on 1/20 of his income in California. North Carolina tax – 5.75%. California tax – 13.3%.
   The reason the tax is in excess of 100% is that Newton was paid $$97,000 for the Superbowl while he was paid $764,705 for each of 17 regular season games. I suspect this is averaged in calculating California tax. I suspect this is what the author of the article really intended to say.

All I know is that LeBron James famously SAVED more than $ 10 MILLION in State Taxes when he left Cleveland for Miami. http://www.fredricktax.com/news Sure, he makes mega-millions of dollars … so who cares. But LeBron had a LOT more $$$ to donate DIRECTLY to the needy … rather than launder it through multiple layers of overpaid State bureaucrats. Giving to the government is … almost … as inefficient as giving $$$ to the Clinton Foundation … almost.
