After a decade of uncool Stephen Harper, the NY Times has decided that Canada is “Suddenly … Hip”. An American colleague brought this article to my attention, thinking that I’d be gushing with joy that “once again” I come from a cool country. She was rather shocked, and dare I say disappointed, to hear that I wasn’t a fan boy of Justine ‘Shiny Pony’ Trudeau.
I went on a mini-rant, stating my belief that Trudeau is merely a puppet figure, with the real levers of power back in the crafty hands of the Laurentian Elite. When she heard this, she immediately said, “Oh you mean like during the George W. Bush years?” To this I responded, “More like the Obama years.” This didn’t sit well with her. She pursed her lips, turned around, and walked away.
I got to thinking how incredibly effective the predominately left-wing media is at spin and shaping opinions. My colleague is no dummy but undoubtedly most of her life she has predominately (only?) heard leftist opinions on all things political. To believe that Barack Obama is a magnanimous free-thinker who considers all of the facts at hand and makes the best decisions for America is preposterous at best and more likely akin to idiotic. But such is the mindset for at least 35% of Americans.

How can anyone perceive Trudeau to be anything other than the retard he is? I guess it’s like believing the affirmative action president with secret college grades is a great intellect. A lot of wishful thinking?
Reasoning with many of the left is like trying to bath an alley cat. What’s in the best interests is not the top priority.
I am at a loss to see any silver lining these days. Many of my intelligent friends appear to have been brainwashed and believe in the shiny pony and BO, as well as Kathleen. I’m buying domestic hootch now as the exchange rate is bound to drive up the costs of foreign booze. Wow is us!
Wow should be woe above. 🙂
On CNN this morning they were saying Turdope was hanging with “Leo” and “Bono” last night, I’m sure they smoked a couple jays, and talked about how popular each of them are.
How pathetic.
Leonardo DiCaprio, the intellectual giant, thought a Calgary chinook, was global warming gone mad. Is Trudeau that stupid? Close.
If your colleague believes idiotic things then you might want to reassess whether she is a dummy.
Tis true our Trudashion is a titantic intellect……..in a world full of icebergs.
And when you elect a selfie-loving celebrity, devoid of accomplishment, as PM; maybe you shouldn’t be too,too surprised when he turns out to be so into himself his head is up his posterior orifice.
8…..12….20 years of this?
OMG.
An Ontario acquaintance’s Christmas letter made reference to his happiness at the election of young Trudeau and the glowing contrast to Harper (who but a progressive would dive into politics in a Christmas, ah, Holiday letter?).
Part of his Paean to the Libs was the mention of approving comments from the self-same Gray Lady.
It’s downright funny how traditionally anti-American progs go gaga when some American progressive outlet or politician makes a favorable comment. You can’t get much more lickspittle than that.
Hey NYT, enough of Canadians we find embarrassing. The really cool expats are people like Mark Steyn and Ted Cruz. Even Krauthammer could run circles around anyone on your list.
It’s a tactical error to parry any comparisons to Bush 43. Play to their preconceptions; Trudeau puts the ‘W’ in ‘idiot legacy child’. Except W managed 2 terms as a state governor.
Yes we went from “World Statesman of the Year” – to “stupid cool guy that hangs out with megalomaniac entertainers”.
Party on Canada, the hangover will be a doozy!
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/stephen-harper-accepts-world-statesman-of-the-year-award-1.1258743
The fact that so many Canadians are enamored of the magic negro in the white house and our own silly frat boy speaks to the utter political stupidity of otherwise functional pseudo-humanoids. Reminds me of the Lexus I saw parked by the road the other day with a “Bernie 2016” bumper sticker and yes, it had Ontario plates. And folks wonder why so many around the world consider Canadians to be utterly obnoxious, self-satisfied dumbasses. It’s the childish thinking that gets Canada relegated to the also rans. Yes Canada is back, it’s back at the kiddie table. Well done. Now pardon me while I go back to ignoring my fellow Canadian twits.
I wouldn’t miss them if any of those three were hanged, but CNN isn’t a reliable source.
“But such is the mindset for at least 35% of Americans.” Lemmings all!

yup… way cool…
“TORONTO — Two publicly funded Ontario colleges have opened campuses
in Saudi Arabia that don’t allow women, and the province’s minister of
post-secondary education says it’s up to schools to decide which students
to admit.”
i guess sharia in ontario can’t be far behind?
allahu snackbar, baby.

Would love to be a fly on the wall when Trudeau meets some of the heavy hitters at Davis. I hope he didn’t wear the jeans he wore exiting the plane. I notice the Montreal Gazette and probably other papers cropped that part of the picture out. And they say the media isn’t biased!
When it falls apart just remind them the reason they voted for the goofball was because of the media’s lies.
That plays into their victim mentality and gives them someone to blame for their foolishness.
CBC apologizes for error?
CBC used a Michigan testing lab but got erroneous results on supplement concentrations.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/marketplace-vitamins-protein-powders-lab-testing-1.3412760
I think they forgot to convert US milligrams to CDN milligrams as the concentrations they
observed were 1/3 lower than the label stated.
Sorry big pharma, we were sure you were screwing us.
Confess to having ever heard of about 2 people on NYT Canadian list. Also, note the apology at the end they have great difficulty even identifying Canadians accurately. Take anything they say with an enormous spoonful of salt.
“My colleague is no dummy”
Dummies don’t think for themselves.
It’s the second decade of the 21st century.
Anyone who still gets their primary public information from the Legacy Media is a dummy.
Most definitely a contrast to Harper — but only a fool would call it “glowing”. Like others, I am embarassed and demoralized by the decision of Canadians to turf a strong capable government for the ad-hoc, fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants, government and their feckless leader. I conclude it is simply that a lot of Canadians are not very astute thinkers. If someone says something appealing, they are easily swayed without taking time to analyze.
One of my friends says her husband is delighted with the election outcome, and how nice it is to have his values reflected in the Federal government. I was aghast. WHAT VALUES?? The Liberals are all about promises to their friends. They have no values. Already they are dismantling responsible changes made by Harper — like accountability for unions. I notice that the charities can now go ahead with whatever political agenda they might have with no questions asked. This is nothing but abdicating responsible governance. Something is very wrong with Canadians to have supported this nonsense.
New York Times, eh? Well that’s about as valid as something that might have come out of Pravda. Just goes to show you how really screwed up the left wing on the world really is. They do realize, I presume, that Lenin really is dead and not just sleeping?
I had an extended encounter with a philosophy professor a couple years that had results similar to Robert’s experiences with his American colleague.
I shall have to write this up and make it a magazine article or blog post.
…and he’s in a wheelchair!
Interesting — and yet, when Harper fundeded the Mother and Child Health initiative, we were supposed to foist abortions on countries whether they supported abortions or not. I am so sick of perpetual leftist garbage, it almost makes me ill.
I actually found the article somewhat condescending. I also do not trust some of the high-flying American media. The NYT is paid to run pieces — a good example was the anti-Harper article (written by some Toronto guy) that appeared during the election. It was obviously intended to create a stir in Canada, and I believe it was funded by the globalist anti-Harper forces. Otherwise you would not have the NYT paying any attention to the Canadian election. They used to run CIA pieces and they regularly publish articles on global warming, promoting the hysteria and attempting to make it seem credible. The NYT is NOT a trustworthy news source. Given it’s former place in the media world, that seems like a shocking thing to say, but it is most definitely true.
Harper can’t credit for Canada’s #2 “Best Country,” next to Germany (we can pass them soon?) because, well he’s not in power anymore. We can, however, blame him for the gong show our cabin boy statism will cause in the future. Progressivia is so easy; always complain, never take the blame, have no shame:
http://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/us-news-unveils-best-countries-rankings
Any ranking system of the best countries in the world that lists Sweden as #5 cannot be taken seriously.
“I was aghast. WHAT VALUES?? The Liberals are all about promises to their friends. They have no values.”
Exactly! The Liberals have had no values other than the destruction of the family since PM Louie St. Laurent.
I have to admire Robert and other folks that have the brass ones to actually confront otherwise intelligent people parroting the propaganda that has been drummed into them on a daily basis by the leftist media.
It seems the Russians had figured out by the 1980s that the progressive media was totally corrupt. Most North Americans are a little slow.
And “W” could fly a F102…..a difficult aircraft to fly. Trudeau can’t pick his nose properly.
Canada is cool again?
Well, yes, it is winter right now…
That’ll teach you to argue about PM Selfie or Obama to a woman. The inherent Marxism in women leads to them being elected again and again.
Great country for rapists.
Might be mean in some circles, but I told my kids, dont marry and spawn kids with someone who has had mental problems in their family ie mom and dad,,thats how we breed cattle, we weed out the nuts and millies. Unfortunately Peeair never heard my sermons, here are the results..
I’m more concerned about our solvency than our coolness.
What’s cool about a jack-off whose repertoire of political wit makes one wonder if he is legally brain-dead?
Let’s see how “cool” things are when people start losing more than their jobs.
Family psychiatrists would go gaga over the repeating patterns in that family. There are multiple ones.
Liberal co-worker mentioned that Trudeau was in one of his dreams the night before. I asked him if he was top or bottom.
Hasn’t mentioned the shiny one since.
Ha ha ha ! Canada elected Justin Bieber to run their country. Schadenfreude is a BITCH … eh ? Now it appears as though the USA didn’t elect THE most unqualified stooge in the history of presidential elections.
If I may steal a quote from tj230 on the CLA Chopping Blog:
Build a cabin.
Stock up on ammo.
Hope you need neither.
I had no idea that Canada was ever cool to begin with. I’ve often had the impression that we were a laughingstock throughout much of the world: not sufficiently smart or ambitious to be Americans and too unsophisticated to be Europeans.
NYT doing to the word “cool” what Progressives did yo the word “progress”.
Americans are neither smarter nor more ambitious than Canadians.
Envying them as such is like envying your neighbour who lives above his means on borrowed money because the neighbour has nicer stuff than yours since he isn’t afraid to borrow 100 times more money and throws it around with more panache’.(‘scuse my French)
As to Europeans being more sophisticated than Canadians.
The root word of sophisticated is sophist. Sophistry means to lie and deceive.
I’ll take humble honesty any day.
My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my design. He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated very warmly with me upon this subject. He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering inclination, I had for leaving father’s house and my native country, where I might be well introduced, and had a prospect of raising my fortune by application and industry, with a life of ease and pleasure. He told me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings of a nature out of the common road; that these things were all either too far above me or too far below me; that mine was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found, by long experience, was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the miseries and hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanic part of mankind, and not embarrassed with the pride, luxury, ambition, and envy of the upper part of mankind. He told me I might judge of the happiness of this state by this one thing—viz. that this was the state of life which all other people envied; that kings have frequently lamented the miserable consequence of being born to great things, and wished they had been placed in the middle of the two extremes, between the mean and the great; that the wise man gave his testimony to this, as the standard of felicity, when he prayed to have neither poverty nor riches.
He bade me observe it, and I should always find that the calamities of life were shared among the upper and lower part of mankind, but that the middle station had the fewest disasters, and was not exposed to so many vicissitudes as the higher or lower part of mankind; nay, they were not subjected to so many distempers and uneasinesses, either of body or mind, as those were who, by vicious living, luxury, and extravagances on the one hand, or by hard labour, want of necessaries, and mean or insufficient diet on the other hand, bring distemper upon themselves by the natural consequences of their way of living; that the middle station of life was calculated for all kind of virtue and all kind of enjoyments; that peace and plenty were the handmaids of a middle fortune; that temperance, moderation, quietness, health, society, all agreeable diversions, and all desirable pleasures, were the blessings attending the middle station of life; that this way men went silently and smoothly through the world, and comfortably out of it, not embarrassed with the labours of the hands or of the head, not sold to a life of slavery for daily bread, nor harassed with perplexed circumstances, which rob the soul of peace and the body of rest, nor enraged with the passion of envy, or the secret burning lust of ambition for great things; but, in easy circumstances, sliding gently through the world, and sensibly tasting the sweets of living, without the bitter; feeling that they are happy, and learning by every day’s experience to know it more sensibly.

Stargazer, I am going to correct that 35% number because 51% voted for Obama.
So why dont hollywood fathead Micheal Moore go live in canada if he thinks they are so better
“I had no idea Canada was cool again”.
Cool Britannia redux, eh?!
Despite a self appointed claim for foreign expertise, regarding real Canadian thinking, the NYT is as clueless as the Kokomo Courier. Any writer using the affected “ice” as a qualifier with hockey, should be disregarded as a credible commenter on Canada. This would get you in serious trouble in any Canadian rink.
The last piece I read on Canada in NYT also had an apology for mixing up heads of state heads of government distinction. Like Obama, NYT has a fuzzy understanding of the role of GG vs PM in our system.
When they want an article on Canada, they routinely go to a like minded writer from Toronto, Margaret Atwood, or the insufferable Heather Mallick. These are representative of Canadian values? I don’t think so.
