A similar uprising of the Shia in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province took place some decades back. The King sent in helicopter gunships, and it got very ugly from there. In this day and age, it’s pretty unlikely that a similarly brutal put-down of rebellious Shias would be unnoticed and uncriticized by the world media (or I would like to think so). Still, the King might do it anyway, it’s hard to predict.
If the Sauds do take harsh action against the Shia, it could pull in Iran, and at that point it could become very, very ugly.

Seems that SA has already broken off diplomatic relations with Iran. Iran is in a far better position should the war between Iran and SA cease to be a proxy war. Closing the straights of Hormuz is something that the Iranians have likely been looking into for decades and this would knock SA oil out of the market. I don’t think the US can do much about it and risks losing a few carriers in the process.
SA is basically ISIS with an internationally recognized government and the US has totally screwed up in backing wahhabists who are basically illiterate goat herders with billions of dollars.
On the up side, loss of SA crude would bring back oil sands employment and SA would no longer have the means to fund Canadian terrorist groups to stop the oil sands. I would like to see both side devastated. BUT, SA has a lot of backing, from the likes of Egypt, the Emirates, Kuwait and possibly Turkey. And then there is the fact that Israel has a behind the scene relationship with SA. All these possible supporters of SA would fear Iran as the dominate force in the ME, and all are equipped as good or better than Iran, with mostly American hard ware. Russia is in a poor position to step into this fray as their own Sunni’s would probably engage. Russia is in Syria because of their own “terrorist” problem, and I don’t think they want to expand that problem. This could get very interesting as Israel is the unknown factor here. They have much to lose if Iran wins.

So the “refugees” we are bringing in are unscreened (except to exclude those non-Moslems who are really in danger). How many are Shia and how many are Sunni – and are they going to bring their war with them? Toronto could go from melting pot to molten pot.
