  1. Because NEP2015….
He may not have caused it…(drop in prices) …but I’m sure he doesn’t care….Notley is waiting for her selfie with him tho!!

  2. Obama stoops keystone and lies about it claiming this climate change poppycock What a big fat lie and earning another pinnocio He just dont want to disapoint leaders of the various eco-freak groups(Greenpeace,Sierra Club,Etc)as well as his buddies from OPEC Barack Obama LIAR,LIAR PANTS ON FIRE

  3. During the election Trudeau said he would not follow in his father’s footsteps, and he would not bring in policies that hurt Alberta simply to get votes elsewhere.
He is a liar. That is exactly what he is going to do. When you put a radical fool like Dion in your cabinet, and you talk about carbon taxes, and selling Canada to the global warming commies, it means you don’t give a damn about Alberta.
At this point in time Alberta’s future is not bright at all.

  4. Exactly correct…..this is the IMperfect storm for Alberta. Commies running Edmonton, idiots running Ottawa and the mayors of both major cities in Alberta are morons. All aligned with the global warming fraud. Alberta is toast.

  5. Why don’t they convert the surplus office space to low income and refugee housing? It would be a win-win. In fact, I’m surprised it hasn’t already been proposed.

  6. How do Albertans feel being sacrificed on the global warming altar? Not very well. The whole point of blaming Alberta for CO2 is beyond stupid. Blame the consumers. Whether consumers use Venezuelan or Alberta crude is irrelevant. The fact that they consume crude oil causes CO2. The only workable solution is to tax the hell out of CO2 production. That means taxing widows and orphans for the output of coal fired plants and next to nothing for nuclear plants. Anything else is meaningless. Mind you there is no such thing as man made global warming. The sky is falling.

  7. “Why don’t they convert the surplus office space to low income and refugee housing?”
Sounds like a Liberal idea. Answer – because it would cost more than building new residential housing.

  8. How many years will it take for the double whammy of Trudeau/Notely to turn Alberta into a have not province?

  9. I notice that news stories about Canadian Oil Industry Layoffs have been using that same 35,000 number since mid-summer. There’s been a lot of people let go since then. But the story is correct in conveying the high degree of uncertainty people who work in the industry feel. And it’s not going to get better anytime soon.

  10. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/environment-minister-vows-more-stringent-reviews-for-pipelines/article27184263/
Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is pledging to subject existing oil sands pipeline proposals to tougher environmental assessments, as the Liberal government looks to boost its international credibility at the upcoming Paris climate-change summit
    Juxtaposition this…
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/air-canada-offers-to-help-liberal-government-fly-in-syrian-refugees/article27179350/
The Trudeau Liberal government on Monday announced it is assigning nine cabinet ministers, including Health Minister Jane Philpott and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, to expedite the Syrian refugee initiative. The Liberals promised during the federal election campaign to resettle 25,000 Syrians by Jan. 1 – an exceedingly ambitious goal, according to refugee advocates in this country, who say it cannot be done this fast.

  11. Keep in mind that unlike in the past, there are people installed in both Notley’s circle of power and Trudeau’s, who want far more than carbon taxes. They want the oil sands industry in Alberta to be killed off. They will be coy about that objective, but that is what they have in the back of their minds, and they will push for policy that achieves that result.
It is a serious situation, and Albertans should start recalling Notely’s MLAs until they are reduced to a minority.

  12. The wheels have fallen off AB but in Calgary they are going to build a new hockey rink come hell or high water. The private sector who should build these things wont touch it with a barge pole – sooo that leaves the taxpayer to foot the bill.
The taxpayers are the same guys who used to have jobs in the now empty office towers. WTF are these people thinking? Calgary is led by a mayor , council and hockey team who are unfit. There are far more pressing issues that need to be addressed. Maybe they should wait until the next oil boom…..

  13. If Harper had survived this past election I am sure that as soon as Obama referred to Alberta oil sands crude as ‘the dirtiest oil in the world’, the TransMountain Pipeline to Vancouver would be fast tracked.
A sad commentary that the conviction behind NAFTA could be sacrificed in this way. The export of Canadian crude by water is a national security issue in a country that funds a huge amount of their social services by crude sales. Laughable that social services in Europe are always thrown up by progressives in Canada as examples for social goals. Norway and Britain finance their programs through North Sea oil production.
Yes, the Liebels will come for more oil revenue, Dion is working on the paperwork already. The ‘natural’ state of this country will re-establish itself as Turdeau throws bones from the back of his touring train. The big question is whether westerners will accept this development once again.
When Obama is prepared to import Venezula and African heavy oil and not Canada’s the message should be clear. The Americans are prepared to ship over 1 million boe per day by rail. My simple view is that of economic imperialism. It is not in American interest to have a oil rich Canada that can plot a independent development course. A Canada wealthy enough to defend Canadian interest in the Artic and engage south east Asia on the same basis as the USA through the TPP agreement. (A TPP agreement which the USA tried to exclude Canada from.)
As badly as the Conservatives conducted this past election we can all wonder how much foreign money came into Canada to help defeat the Harper government.

  14. “He just dont want to disapoint leaders of the various eco-freak groups”
More than that, he’s doing what he promised: destroy the fossil fuel economy.
BC: “They want the oil sands industry in Alberta to be killed off.”
    Quite right.

  15. And meanwhile, China UNDERREPORTS its coal emissions alone by more than the TOTAL amount of CO2 produced by ALL of Canada. The fossil fuel industry in Canada should stop ALL production for a few weeks just to show the idiots how long society would last without it.

  16. Chickens coming home to roost. Hopefully most of the layoffs are those that voted NDP or Liberal.

  17. “encourage a massive uptake of renewable energy.”
Yes! the sucking noise of Money disappearing into the greedy hands of environmental NGO’s engaged in AGW corruption. Follow the money!

  18. It is amazing how fast things change! Back in the days of high oil prices, 2011 and 1981, if even a pipeline in Backwaterstan had a leak the price jumped up 1 buck a barrel. Everyday the media preached that the oil was all gone and we were heading to end of mankind as we know it. The money that was ripped off of consumers because of all this false hype was criminal. I guess now the oil companies are paying the price and the added bonus of the Left taking over provincial and Federal power will double the blow.
I’m all for free enterprise, but the oil business is a total scam and the rest of the economy gets to pay for their greed. Look at gas prices at the pumps, and home natural gas costs, they haven’t gone done at all. All you hear is more excuses; plant overhauls during the busy summer driving season, etc. etc.
Maybe it’s time that nations take control of the pricing and stop the wild swings that the oil business and the media create. Companies can increase profits by being efficient rather than being corrupt.

  19. // “It is a bloodbath,” said Alexi Olcheski, an office-leasing principal //
    A bloodbath in office-leasing.

  20. So how far from treason are the actives of our bureaucracies and elected officials?
The stupid knows no limits, danger children playing, with gasoline and matches.
With the recent federal election I see a geographical difference of opinion in Canada.
Run a line down the QuebecOntario boarder to North Bay, then over to Georgian Bay.
    Almost a classic ethical split.
West still respects honesty and self reliance.
East wants somebody else to provide, lying, stealing and systemic corruption are now voter honoured pastimes in our cities.
So does the West still want in?
Trudeau has the potential to destroy what we know as Canada , purely due to circumstances and natural stupidity.
    Entertaining days ahead.
If Alberta has recall laws still I would suggest the opposition use them anyway they can.
Certainly our union buddies are not shy about abusing each and every statute on the books.

  21. A bloodbath that is just getting started. If oil prices stay low through next year, and there is no reason to think they won’t, it is going to get far worse. A lot of capital has fled and it’s being deployed elsewhere, it isn’t coming back. Add to that the anti-business government in Edmonton and there are just no good signs anywhere.

  22. This guy was soundly defeated in the Banff-Airdrie riding by Blake Richards (CPC), but now he pops back up as the Chief of Staff to the Environment Minister. He is truly a rent-seeker, as his primary business was related to alternative energy and wind farms, with the one he claimed to be most proud of being situated in Ontario.

  23. yup john, those NDPee’rs in Manitoba and Alberta or just figs of the imagination, aren’t they, throw in the fact that it’s been only a few years since Saskatchewan got rid of their dippers and you guys out west are a bastion of conservatism. Hell, even your Progressive Cons might as well be dippers. Don’t take yer head out of yer butt as the reality of things may just shock you

  24. Mr.Eels, you are a consarned genius!
Just for the hell of it, submit this idea to the federal government, I bet they look at it. Might get to meet Trudeau,y’know!
I see an “Order” in your future.

  25. Two things you can always depend on in Calgary:
    Booms always follow busts.
    Busts always follow booms.
Calgary prayer: Let there be another oil boom, I promise not to p!ss it all away this time.

  26. But other than hand-wringing, what is being done about it? Where are the protests? Is the Legislature being circled? Any yelling? Any anger?

  27. “It is a serious situation, and Albertans should start recalling Notely’s MLAs until they are reduced to a minority.”
Alberta had recall back in the 1930s but when the premier was about to be recalled the legislation was reversed. No recall today, as far as I am aware.

  28. Cal2:
    I disagree, it’ll NEVER HAPPEN!
Trudeau/Notley will redefine “have not” to permanently exclude Alberta so they can rape our economy with no inconvenient interruption.

  29. “No recall today, as far as I am aware.”
You are correct. Recall, however, was one of the planks in the WildRose platform.
If you like accountability from government, recall is one of the few ways politicians can be made accountable between regular elections.
PCs, Liberals, and the NDP hate the idea of recall because the hate being accountable.

  30. This feels familiar.
The provincial NDP has said they’re going to change the royalty structure (increase in taxes) they’ve increased the taxation levels in the recent provincial budget, the City of Calgary is increasing the property tax each year for the foreseeable future, the newly elected federal Liberal gov’t has indicated they’re going to increase taxation on a wide spectrum of activities that will impact the west.
There is no escape from increased taxation in the next few years, and nothing in the future that looks like it’s going to increase oil prices. And Iran will soon be pumping / exporting 5 million barrels a day for export?
    These are the good times.

  31. First, the capital costs required to retrofit the surplus office supply into low income housing would be exorbitantly expensive.
Second, the code issues with the city would be an absolute nightmare.
Third, the rent from low income housing would barely cover the property taxes for these buildings. Landlords would be better off leasing their space for op costs only, which is exactly what some are already doing…

  32. marc in Calgary;
Where are you finding the Iranian 5 million boe per day export numbers?
My understanding is that they need significant capital investment to produce 2 mil boe. Also approximately $1 trillion of oil projects shelved to date. I am staying the course in oil investments as I expect Q2 2016 WTI of + $60 boe.
Irregardless of what price my biggest Canadian concern is still the AB NDP and the federal Liebels. They will increase their slice of the revenue dollar no matter what price. The long term implications for western Canada are dire. It will come down to how passive westerners will receive these actions. I don’t hold out much hope.
