By any measure, President Obama’s effort to train a Syrian opposition army to fight the Islamic State on the ground has been an abysmal failure. The military acknowledged this week that just four or five American-trained fighters are actually fighting.
But the White House says it is not to blame…

A secular Syrian opposition force to Assad: that ship has truly sailed.
It’s now Assad backed by Russia (and Iran!) against the Islamists.
I think the choice is Assad or ISIS. The rest are like Obama and his 5 man Syrian Liberation Army. Obama just keeps getting stupider and stupider. Jimmy Carter is truly being challenged for the title of worst president in modern times.
The Syrian ship has sailed. Assad is just the best alternative right now, which shows what a mess it is there.
I hear you scar, but I think Obama has long since made Carter look like the best parts of Einstein, Mother Theresa, and Ronald Reagan. Until Obama I truly had no idea how low the scale could register.
Pretty much on side with Paul. The ME has no strategic interest for Canada or the USA. If it is important to the Euros then for once they can fight their own war. By taking refugees from Syria or any other ME country the west is simply relieving the pressure that might bring a resolution. The Saudis and their cohorts the Emirates should be held answerable.
Islam as practised in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran and pretty much anywhere else is all about ruling the entire world. The objective in the mosque in Edmonton is no different. The adherents simply quibble about the amount of violence to achieve the same end. At what point will Canadians actually decide to protect themselves?
I enjoyed the faux outrage of the media at Trump not correcting a citizen about Obama’s religion.
On one hand, who is anyone to say what another person’s religion is?
On the other hand, if being Muslim is okay with the media then what is so bad about someone saying that Obama is a Muslim?
It is like the Seinfeld episode, where they say, not that there is anything wrong with that.
“The ME has no strategic interest for Canada or the USA.”
Oh, right.
It doesn’t influence our oil industry at all.
It doesn’t provide the inspiration for Islamist extremism here.
Now pull my other leg.
To take a line already probably misattributed to Trotsky and stretch it further:
“You may not be interested in the Middle East, but the Middle East is interested in you.”
Events far away always seem to have an annoying habit of shattering isolationist reveries.
“Obama just keeps getting stupider and stupider” – I don’t think so. Rat Obama is hostile to the US; and is effective as an enemy of the US and its interests. Negative value; and quite a considerable one.
unfortunately for the ME. Canadas best interests would be if the whole place was turned to glass.
JJM;
If the rationale for ME involvement is oil then why stop there? You can use the same for almost any aspect of global society. Oil is not a rationale as NA is energy self sufficient. The choice that OPEC (thusly Saudi Arabia) has made is to bankrupt North America oil producers. This is their right in free markets.
Not sure what your point is concerning international Islamic radicalism. IMHO it appears that all Islam is radical. It is time for North America to secure borders and start acting like actual soverign nations. Multi-cult is a farce.
IT has been obvious for years we should back assad and get a level field and then make a move I guess he got sick of waiting
You will never work at the cbc

I am coming to the point where I say: “Putin, let’s make a deal”. We have common foes, let’s deal with them first.
This has been obvious for years.
Good God, we made a deal with Stalin so that we could beat Hitler, and Stalin was … way worse than Vladimir Putin ever thought of being. Russia is not currently letting in Middle Eastern settlers, and have dealt with their own internal Muslim problem (the Chechens) the only way it could be handled – with brutality.
Brutality? That, after all, is how Middle Eastern governments handle their problems with the recalcitrant among their number. Even Egypt, with its Muslim Brotherhood problem.
“Oil is not a rationale as NA is energy self sufficient.”
No it isn’t. If it were the US would not be getting about 30 percent of its oil from outside North America. And here in Canada, Nova Scotia would not have shortages because a few tankers sailed in late.
It doesn’t much matter what’s in the ground or under the sea in North America. If it’s not being extracted to a level that routinely assures 100+ percent supply, we are energy-dependent on offshore supply.
“The choice that OPEC (thusly Saudi Arabia) has made is to bankrupt North America oil producers.”
So you’re admitting that Canada and the US do have a strategic interest in the Middle East then – since oil producers there can affect our domestic economies through pricing.
A barrel of oil is a free-market commodity and producers get to price their product as competitively as they want. Why would I buy Canadian oil if Middle Eastern oil is cheaper?
“Not sure what your point is concerning international Islamic radicalism. IMHO it appears that all Islam is radical”
Islamic extremism (note “extremism” not “radicalism”) is not synonymous with worldwide Islam. Islam is no more monolithic than any other religion.
Very specific elements within Islam are at the forefront of Islamist terrorism, such as the most active and aggressive one right now – the Islamic State – which is operates from (drumroll) the Middle East and reaches out even into North America.
You know, you and Robert may well be right. Western civilization is in a fight for its life against radical Islam and its Allie the progressives.
It is possible that most on SDA have seen this on you tube: Obama Admits He is a Muslim

Here lies Valerie Jarett….
What? You mean we are not there yet??
I’ll put the champagne away…….
the fact that America and Canada do not exploit the energy resources to the max in no way means that we do not have enough energy. there are estimates that go as high as 600 years supply, without oil or coal or gas from anywhere other than our own supplies.
