There is a difference between hunting and poaching. This jerk is a poacher. If I met him on an elevator I would have to use every ounce of my strength not to reach over and strangle him.

Cecil was a well known icon. He was a big tourism draw. Worth hundreds of thousands in tourism dollars spent by people wanting to see him.

He is different than other animals and other lions. You cannot compare Cecil to anonymous polar bears, deer or cattle operations.

No different than what a sports fan would pay to see a hockey legend play who admittedly may be past his prime versus a run of the mill defenseman or a beer league player.

Its simple economics. But it is also more than that because people hate to see beautiful lions slaughtered for sport. Who the hell eats lion meat? And yet you use that argument stating that "wol, duh, people like ya know shoot deers hey cuz like for duh meat hey."

From what I've been able to glean about the incident, it's looking like the guides hired by Dr. Palmer did the luring. He claims that the first he knew there was something wrong was when they were dressing the kill and the collar was discovered, which isn't that unbelievable given the way safari hunts work (big bwana shoots the thing, then the natives swarm the carcass and dress the kill so he won't get his hands dirty). And at least one site claims that he was the one who reported the mistaken kill.

If Dr. Palmer is really an evil poacher, he's gone to an awful lot of expense and effort to pay all the proper fees and get the proper permits, and to report that the kill wasn't clean himself after the fact.

I've never had a problem with hunting for food, and have enjoyed elk, moose and some other types over the years. However, I could never understand the allure of trophy hunting, especially of rarer animals like lions etc. If I was a patient of his and discovered that he was s safari hunter, I would have found another dentist long ago. And if Palmer is guilty of illegally hunting this animal, then he should be prosecuted; unfortunately he would never get a fair trial in Mugabe's Zimbabwe, so I would oppose any sort of extradition that might be requested by that regime.

Baby elephant eating Mugabe is already using this incident to great effect. I expect that his government will spin this to at least partially rehabilitate Mugabe's appearance in the western media, and it likely will be successful given the low information threshold of the shaming boneheads currently calling for his demise.

The feeding frenzy of internet shaming that we are seeing is frankly horrifying, and I don't see this sort of thing getting any better anytime soon.
