I talked to a public health official and asked him what's the best way to anticipate where there might be higher than normal rates of vaccine noncompliance, and he said take a map and put a pin wherever there's a Whole Foods. I sort of laughed, and he said, "No, really, I'm not joking." It's those communities with the Prius driving, composting, organic food-eating people.
More here: The communities where anti-vaxxers cluster are also among the most liberal.
It's like there's a pattern.
Lots more in this vein at Instapundit.

A problem that corrects itself. Just stay away from organic hippy people
So...people who vote liberal.
Oh but remember, it's conservatives who are the "anti-science" and "backward" ones. This reminds me of a large study conducted by some Ivy League university, I think it was Harvard. They discovered that self-identified conservatives demonstrated a higher degree of scientific literacy than self-identified liberals. The study authors, and reporters who wrote about the findings, were all shocked. If they hadn't swallowed so much of their own propaganda, they wouldn't have been.
Kate - 'Science' is spelled wrong in your second header....
Co-opt municipal zoning bodies such that mosques are constructed in same areas and hope the whole mess takes care of itself?
'Chutzy' the spelling is reflective of the mentality of those who think polio, measles, mumps, rubella and meningitis are cool diseases to catch.
Well other than the fact that they may KILL you...

Aaahhhh...:) Their tribe is definitely growing.
nenshi may go for legislative composting bins thereby rendering Calgary a rat attraction more similar to his roots. add alderdope Duh Farrell to the mix with backyard chickens and you have a rat haven complete with every hairy pitted washed up hippy broad and the walking soup stuck in their beard greeny husbands , fortunately we have been blessed with either their inability to breed via mutual gross out or their personal save the planet beliefs that wont allow them to run pipe sideways to procreate
Yes their tribe is growing. Although it is from indoctrination, not procreation.
Iowahawk: "Highest rates of vaccination exemption requests in US: Oregon, Vermont. County: Marin, CA. "Portlandia" is funny until the kids start dying."
It's those communities with the Prius driving, composting, organic food-eating people.
So in other words, these metero betas that will be the first to wither away when the s*** hits the fan.
Yet, these are the same people who swallow whole the belief in man-made, global warming.
I strongly protest the use of the word 'disease' to characterize the marginalized viruses polio, measles and the like. Haven't we in the West, with our drugs and hygiene, done enough harm already, forcing these struggling viruses to live tiny lives in poor, filthy, third-world countries? Natural justice (TM) demands that we open our illegal borders to them, just as Social Justice requires that we welcome the world citizens that carry them.
Remember: Just as there are no illegal people, there are no unnatural organisms. Except those GMO things. Oh, and white men.
It's their subconscious trying to tell them they are bad parents.
But their brains already know that and don't care.
Faking being a good, concerned parent gets the job done.

Damn hair headed, incense burning, lice infested Hippies,

Disenfranchised, struggling germs and viruses,

I am beginning to see the truth of it all..
ya, these Liberals is all kinds 'a sciency.
Did y'all know that dowsing is making a comeback among the granola set? Uh huh. They dowse with a specially chosen crystal on a string to see which manufacturer's vitamin or supplement is most closely attuned to their unique energy field.
I'm not kidding. I have seen it. More than once.
From the comments, "Darwin always wins".
How wonderful it would be if science really did factor into this debate. The science that shows adverse reactions do happen. But for it to be real science, reports of reactions to Health Canada would be mandatory right? nope. voluntary!! Parents would be told that the MMR, chicken pox and any other live vaccines can be shed after a vaccine -perhaps to immunocompromised individuals- for up to 6 weeks. nope. never had them tell me that.(so all you terrified ppl please stay away from all children who do not live near whole foods.) Science does show that the last 154 cases of polio in the USA came from the vaccine.yup. Science shows that adjuvants in vaccines can cause autoimmune diseases. yup. But whatever. I feel thrown under the bus by my fellow conservatives, so I guess I'll go buy a pair of Birkenstocks and continue eating my hummus. Vote green? Not sure I could do that. Guess it'll have to be liberal.
Phantom Your neighborhood sounds like it has gone to pot. Have you thought of a move?
Oh believe me, I did. The fruitcake Liberal voters live in the city, I moved out to the sticks. Where common sense is still common.
All of Ontario isn't f-ed in the head, just the north shore of Lake Ontario pretty much. Once you get past Barrie it becomes fairly normal again.
Science does show that the last 154 cases of polio in the USA came from the vaccine.
-
Yep.
And the science also shows that 75 million children from my baby boom generation never got the virus because of the polio vaccines.
Yep...
I guess the reason we 78 million baby boomer have lived so long is because our organic foods have been dipped in pig shit...
"Faking being a good, concerned parent gets the job done."
That's exactly it isn't it?
I had a uber liberal friend once who had his first child in his early 40s.
He was totally angst ridden over the prospect of his son being circumcised. He himself was.
The pain the poor dear would have to endure.
What was especially funny was that like many liberals he was virulently antisemitic.
BUT his much younger wife (a hottie) was a Jewish convert. But really a fake Jew.
As the shrink in Fawlty said of Basil, there's enough there for a whole conference.
In the end, the circumcision happened after I opined that a cut pe**s was more attractive.
She agreed. LOL.
YUP, it's all about fake concern, fake best parental practices.

"aunt j says Science does show that the last 154 cases of polio in the USA came from the vaccine."
uh, statistically insignificant... plus source please. and finally, maybe you're freaked about the wrong stuff, cos you're more likely to die from a fall in the shower.
ask jared diamond
"You see, falls are a common cause of death in older people like me. (I’m 75.) Among my wife’s and my circle of close friends over the age of 70, one became crippled for life, one broke a shoulder and one broke a leg in falls on the sidewalk. One fell down the stairs, and another may not survive a recent fall."
vaccines are a boon to mankind. only fruitcakes think otherwise.

Well said @ 9:49. The Whole Foods dipped in pig sh*t crowd only concentrate on the 154 cases of polio and not on the 78 million who did not get polio.
In my small rural small urban neighbourhood north of Saskatoon there are approximately a dozen people in their 60s and early 70s who are suffering from the long term effects of polio. A few have already died an early death which can be attributed to them acquiring polio.
The so-called doctor Wallace, and by extension the woman (whatshername) behind "Silent Spring" DDT scam should be charged with crimes against humanity.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the consequences of a wholly inadequate science and mathematics education.
No one has ever claimed that vaccines, like any other medical treatment, are completely safe. They aren't. As neo just pointed out, having a shower or leaving your house isn't 100% safe. What vaccines do is lower a child's risk of contracting a fatal or disfiguring disease, they don't eliminate it. Innumerate and/or emotionally immature people think in black and white, either/or absolutes - if vaccines aren't 100% safe then OMG they are t3h ebils!. A child has a small but statistically significant risk of catching a disease from a vaccine. That same child has a much, much larger risk of catching that disease if not vaccinated, and that risk gets even higher when herd immunity is compromised by people using their skulls to store old rags instead of using their god-given intellect to make educated choices about their children's safety.
Life's dangerous. Get a helmet. And get your kids vaccinated.
Thank you for your response and your kind label. This is the source: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/polio/dis-faqs.htmb please also note the section about vaccine derived polio. My big question is if in 1993 154 cases of polio were caused by the vaccine, how many were caused in previous years? no stats on that? no surprise.
In October 1995 I was talking on the phone with my sister in law -whose 4 month baby was just vaccinated. "oh baby don't do this to me" were the words I heard as the line went dead! Baby had a hypotonic episode- [check out the vaccine reaction reports on Health Canada's site. section 9 a)b)c)d)-that is how many sections it takes to list the possible reactions!!] Baby was transported to hospital by ambulance, spent 4 days in NICU poked, jabbed, spinal tapped- on a little 4 month old! The doctor who was head of neonatology did not report the reaction. Luckily the IMPACT nurse did. IMPACT is voluntary group set up by pediatricians. They are in 12 hospitals in Canada. Thing is-there are 14 children's hospitals in Canada.
and my dear fellow conservative- in the western world you child is much more likely to die from a car crash than the measles, chicken pox or mumps. When I was a kid these were mild childhood diseases. Not sure how they became so scary. Check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDb0ZS3vB9g.
Or, if not kill you, seriously and permanently disable you. I'll bet the anti-vaxxers have no idea what an iron lung is or what it's used for.
I find it amusing that self reported 75 year old who calls himself neo and purports to be a free thinker ridicules you by quoting dogma and casting aspersions.
"vaccines are a boon to mankind. only fruitcakes think otherwise"
"man-made global warning will be the death of mankind. only fruitcakes think otherwise."
Two ideas with traction, both "fully" endorsed by government academia and industry...career suicide to fight either one. In the name of intellectual honesty I can't see how you can embrace one and not the other. (and I speak with the voice of experience on the "career suicide" angle with the granola class.)
How many millions of kids received the polio vaccine and did NOT get the disease? You are taking the anecdotal evidence of ONE baby who had an adverse reaction as proof that vaccines are dangerous? So you are basing your conclusions on numbers that are statistically insignificant.
By the way, prior to 2000, polio vaccine was made from a live poliovirus, so that a few cases of polio per year were caused by the vaccine itself. Since 2000, the polio vaccine used is an inactive form of the virus that cannot cause polio.
http://amhistory.si.edu/polio/howpolio/ironlung.htm
No device is more associated with polio than the tank respirator, better known as the iron lung. Physicians who treated people in the acute, early stage of polio saw that many patients were unable to breathe when the virus’s action paralyzed muscle groups in the chest. DEATH was frequent at this stage, but those who survived usually recovered much or almost all of their former strength.
The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis began mass distribution of tank respirators in 1939.
In the 1930s, an iron lung cost about $1,500—the average price of a home.
In 1959, there were 1,200 people using tank respirators in the United States; in 2004, there were 39.
The anti-vaxxers campaign is akin to cheering for the Darwin Award winner...
I believe the anti-vaxxers have Infantile Brain Syndrome.
"Since 2000, the polio vaccine used is an inactive form of the virus that cannot cause polio."
Thanks for bringing that important information to our attention.
Cheers

aunt j...I know, math is hard, butt please go take a course in it!!!
And here I thought GMO's caused autism, because a local bible-banger just said so the other day in a FB discussion I had with her. She's been vacant from FB ever since, I think I upset her:-)))
spelling seems hard too. I have never in all my discussions linked vaccines to autism. But if that is the way to divert the discussion to belittle anyone who has questions about vaccines, have at it.
Nothing to see here, move along. http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/statisticsreports.html

"I have never in all my discussions linked vaccines to autism".
Perhaps you haven't, but many anti-vaxxers do make that (non-existent) link, relying on the opinion of that Nobel Prize winning scientific genius Jenny McCarthy (arcasm alert).
I don't know what's more depresssing, the fact that an uneducated starlet thinks she's qualified to give medical advise, or the fact that people actually follow her advice.
My comment on the article follows;
MikeSr • a few seconds ago
The "we do not know what to do" crowd is being proactive as they were advised by the wonderful people who privided their ticket to ride. Normally the wonderful prople for the WDNKWTDO's would have been their parents.
Y'all know the people who not only raised the WDNKWTDO's but provided University degrees to fit in with the Education Cult for hiring. Capability means nothing, just fill out the on-line form in the correct way and you'll probably get the interview. Y'all know how you were taught at University.
However now the parents have passed on or become frail or heaven forbid have comprehension problems. What to do! How will we face the terrible people of industry and commerce? If we find someone who sounds educated and strokes our Gaia instincts we will be safe. After all money and time are not a problem for we WDNKWTDO's. We have a ticket to ride and all the time in the world to follow the latest trendy scam
Enviromentalists freakos want to return to sacrificing virgins to their earth deities they worship during their silly Earthday celebrations
aunti j, I never said nor implied that you tried linking vaccines to autism, the only part of my post to you was the math part. As some one else stated that the deaths that are thought to be possibly related to vaccines should be weighted against the probable lives saved, and that exercise is fairly simple math, kapeach???
It is others, not in here, that keep barking about vaccines causing autism. And then there is the crowd that says there is a link between autism and GMOs
"The communities where anti-vaxxers cluster are also among the most liberal."
" Q: How did H1N1 affect your family?
A: For some vaccines I'm a little bit hesitant ... "

And from the pages of Chatelaine;
" Lowering Hadrien to waist height, he’d flipped the infant on his side and spun him in the air, fast. The baby, gobsmacked, rolled like a crazily time-lapsed rotisserie chicken, executing a flawless 360 in mid-air.
“He did the roll?” she asks, eyebrows rising. “That’s new.” Her voice takes on a tone of faux menace. “Oooooh, Justin . . .” "
From chatelaine.
Won't someone think of the children ???
some figures to add to the equation. http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/statisticsreport.pdf
Funny world ain't it?
You'll see a dad throw his toddler around like he's a glop of pizza dough but won't vaccinate the child cause it's too dangerous.
It's quite funny to see Kate utterly reject all climate warming "science" while at the same time embracing all vaccine "science." She lacks coherence. Her opinions mean nothing because they simply reflect her economic reality in Saskatchewan. She's not a genuine thinker but just a repeater of things she's heard elsewhere. It's actually kind of childish.
It would also help if the various public health authorities were honest about adverse reaction rates. Instead, we get the bromide: it's very rare. They need to be more honest, as in: "one in xxxxxx children will have a severe reaction, and one in xxxxxxx children will have a very severe reaction. Should that child be yours, here's how we help." And give real help.
The very fact that one does not remember childhood mates with polio, that one's children are thriving and that one has survived when in previous generations one may have been killed or crippled by a communicable virus is evidence enough for the efficacy and safety of vaccines.
Hi Boris, how's Natasha?
I think the comment that covers your and Aunt J's astoundingly innumerate objections the best is:
News Flash! Dozens die annually from appendix surgery!
And you know, dozens world wide really do die from appendix surgery. Every single year. Either it was done wrong, or too late, or the surgeon was drunk, or the patient caught an infection and died, or lots of things go wrong. And people die.
Shall we ban appendix surgery, you fools?!
"Instead, we get the bromide: it's very rare."
It IS very rare. As in, amazingly rare. As in, more likely to be struck by lightning than have that reaction. Look it up, the numbers are freely available on Google. More people get struck by lightning every year than die or become paralyzed after getting the polio vaccine.
But yes, it does happen. Just as people do get struck by lightning. Shall we all stop going outside? Shall we all wear chain mail underwear and have grounding wires trailing behind everywhere we go?
Do you drive with your kids in the car, ever? That's fantastically more dangerous than polio vaccine.
Barbie says, "Seriously? Math isn't -that- hard."
I see no lack of coherence.
Just as the application of statistics has shown the positive evidence of properly weighing the risks for and against a vaccine for a crippling disease like polio so has statistics shown that the climate warming science is wildly exaggerated.
