It might be hard for today's yoots to believe, but there was a time not so very long ago when helicopter parents were in the minority and nanny-state busybody fascists had yet to fully sink their hooks in. Tonight, we have moving pictures to prove it: From 1933, here's Toddlers' Punch Up in Palm Springs. What a ducky spectacle! Hit her again, Tommy!

That's the sort of thing parents would say back then.

The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

Un-bloody-believable: "Dr. Ben Carson Put on 'Extremist' Watch List by Southern Poverty Law Center"

From the SPLC's "Extremist Files" (actual title):

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson rapidly ascended as a far-right political star after publicly scolding President Obama, whom he sat a few feet away from, at a National Prayer Breakfast in February 2013. Carson's reproach of Obama for his health care and tax policies went viral, unleashing a flood of adulation from right-wing media and hate groups..

Dr. Helen Smith: "Women Who Stalk: A Form of Personal Growth?"

The Government of Alberta is requesting input for the upcoming budget. It features some reasonable choices for budget solutions, especially considering that there aren't a lot of great choices for a province which managed to run a deficit through the oil boom. And they have a good amount of room for comments at the end.

As an Albertan, I would truly appreciate a strong conservative message to get through. Who knows, maybe Prentice will remember what the 'C' in 'PC' stands for?

Sounds like Valerie Jarrett in action: "payback."

Ben Carson is on the side of truth.
Obama made a BIG mistake yesterday. Believers in Jesus Christ are outraged. (See 'Hannity'....)

ISIS releases their guide to women's rights

Looks like they are going after the NDP vote

It advises a minimum two years of maternity leave, extended holidays – including special allowances if children are sick – and extensive childcare provision for women who are forced to work.

Toronto Star, Fri., Feb. 6. They still don't get it.

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorials/2015/02/05/long-form-census-is-needed-for-good-decision-making-editorial.html#

"Without the detailed statistical data contained in [the coercive long-form census] – about employment, education income and much more – governments have less information with which to develop social and economic policies."

Good. Where is the evidence that coercive "social and economic policies" are effective?

When they say they want "evidence-based" policies, what they really mean is statistics-based. Which is not the same thing.

They'll read the census results to find that some people live in houses with four bedrooms and some have only two. Then the rent-seeking activists and bureaucrats will claim there is "bedroom inequality" and embark on a government program to try to remedy the situation. You think I'm joking? This is how these clowns' minds work.

"Those who fill out a voluntary form tend to be better educated, well-to-do and urban; that leaves big gaps of knowledge about disadvantaged and minority groups."

In other words, those people who are supposed to be the beneficiaries of "social and economic policies" are the ones who don't give enough of a damn to fill out the voluntary census. So what does that say about the need for the policies?

"Transit experts will end up guessing where they should put new bus routes; school boards can’t be so sure where they might need a new school; public health officials won’t know where to expand services."

The place "transit experts" don't seem to put bus routes is where they can link up with neighbouring municipalities' routes. Privatize the systems so that businesses can integrate them seamlessly, and let the businesses pay for whatever information information they require.

In the era of the Internet and instant communication, who needs brick-and-mortar schools and classroom instruction any more?

"Public health" is a synonym for "nanny state", and is mostly about pushing people around. And the "evidence" on which they base policies changes frequently. The few things that might be useful, i.e. dealing with an occasional epidemic, are not always handled well.

"When he was justice minister, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson said: 'We don’t govern on the basis of statistics, we govern on the basis of what we hear from the public.'"

"If that’s the case, it should be abundantly clear by now – even to the government – that the public wants the long-form census brought back for 2016."

Wrong. It's the loudmouth rent-seeking activists and bureaucrats who want it back. They are not the public.

The SPLC appears to be "hate" group.

Hey, maybe we'll get fewer social and economic policies.

I worked on the census a couple of times and believe me, the resistance and resentment to being forced to fill in the long survey was intense - especially from the poorer folks.

But it was this trip, the second one, where Chamberlain gives a variation on the much-printed quote, and it was a newspaper editor to take the original quote on this day and be creative with it a few days later."

doctor-claimed-vaccine-autism-link-sues-critics/story

Some irony here, if you let the video roll through to the next video. In the first video, the interviewer is very critical and hostile towards the doctor who is concerned about a link between mmr/rubella vaccine practices and autism. In the second video, the interviewer is very supportive of a doctor who is talking about a study linking autism to having too many children, too close together. Is there an underlying anti-human agenda that ABC is supporting?

Re: Boxing video!

Up until 1960, every Xmas morning--somebody somewhere got boxing gloves!

My brother and I did -- red leather ones packed (loosely) with horse hair. No headgear, though, until years later.

One of the right-handed gloves was *seriously* under-packed. Whoever got to wear that one always had the upper hand..

"Record-breaking snowfall buries parts of northern B.C."

"Heavy snowfall shattered a long-standing record in northern British Columbia this week."

"The following are snowfall totals recorded from 4 P.M. Thursday to 4 A.M. Saturday local time, according to Environment Canada:

Terrace Airport - 159 cm

Onion Lake Highway Station - 157 cm

Kitimat - 168 cm

The last record for 24-hour snowfall in the area was set with 112 cm recorded on February 5, 1961."

"Q So what happened when you tried to plow your driveway?

A My plow truck broke down, so I went on Kijiji and hired a plow company, and that company didn’t succeed — they broke down. They had to get another plow truck to come down and plow him out. So that got me halfway down my driveway. So I called another plow, and he could only get about 15 feet into my driveway with a larger truck. Even a mini excavator with a dump on it couldn’t handle it. I have about three acres of land, so the house is about an acre and a half off the road. It’s quite a huge driveway.

Q How much will this put you out, trying to clear your driveway?

A Well I’m not sure yet. I’ve got $500 set aside and that’s where I’m capping it."

The information below is copied from an email from Andrei, who is a church pastor and small computer business owner, in Molochansk to my cousin in Ontario. His English spelling is a little to be desired, but then my Ukrainian and Russian language skills are non-existent.

"Public health" doesn't mean what we think it does here in the States. It is just another avenue for pushing "social justice theory" down our throats:

--The public-health establishment has unanimously opposed a travel and visa moratorium from Ebola-plagued West African countries to protect the U.S. population. To evaluate whether this opposition rests on purely scientific grounds, it helps to understand the political character of the public-health field. For the last several decades, the profession has been awash in social-justice ideology. Many of its members view racism, sexism, and economic inequality, rather than individual behavior, as the primary drivers of differential health outcomes in the U.S. According to mainstream public-health thinking, publicizing the behavioral choices behind bad health—promiscuous sex, drug use, overeating, or lack of exercise—blames the victim.--

The SPLC has zero credibility. Anyone who criticizes anything Muslim-related goes on the hate list as "anti-Muslim", but any Muslim group which spews hate (and there are some) is listed as "general hate".
