On a related topic, an investigation by the New York Attorney General looked at six herbal supplements...
The testing revealed that all the retailers were selling a large percentage of supplements for which modern DNA barcode technology could not detect the labeled botanical substance, Schneiderman said.
Contaminants identified include rice, beans, pine, citrus, asparagus, primrose, wheat, houseplant, and wild carrot. In many cases, unlisted contaminants were the only plant material found in the product samples.

Having spent 4 grizzly years fighting the disingenuous fraud as a product developer at one of Canada's larger supplement companies, this comes as no surprise. "The supplier says it is ok, we have apiece of paper that says so.' Yeah, just like lululemon believed their supplier's fabric sucked toxins from your body. In the supplement trade, you get a bag of green dust or white powder, and since almost everything is manufactured by third parties, you never know if the $100/kg ingredients even gets into the product, real or ersatz. And, the supply chain from grower to manufacturer just ins't geared up to analyze for the complex ingredients allegedly in your product, anyhow--- save your money, unless your really believe in the placebo effect.
So what's the problem? It'll keep the vegan hippies happy. I wonder if they tested for animal protein from all the bug parts in there also?
This is a tough decision for vegans: Should they eat their grass or smoke it.
Trust NBC to make an attempt to increase their "hits" through the insertion of links between paragraphs. Guess they know their own consumers.
From the same industry that fought tooth and nail against any requirement that they prove the validity of their claims for medicinal effects, a confirmation that the hucksters themselves haven't a clue what's in their bottles.

In some places they use Bird poop its called GUANO
You really want to be careful buying supplements. You buy them at chain stores like Wallymart, you're begging for trouble.
Luckily there is third party testing for many brands out there, they get certified by proper private labs instead of fly-by-night outfits like the CSA.
Just remember, if Brand X is -way- cheaper than the name brand at the vitamin specialty store, THERE IS A REASON. The reason usually is they lied about what's in the little pill.
For the cautious, there's tea available for many herbal remedies. If you have any doubts, you look at the leaves and you can tell if they sold you St. John's Wort or grass clippings.
By the way, while on the subject. Don't be trying St, John's Wort or Lemon Balm for a giggle or because you're curious. Both are SSRI drugs, for real. If you don't need a seritonin re-uptake inhibitor to boost your seretonin levels because they are too low, both those herbs will seriously kick your @ss.
