London tube drivers have voted to strike over the firing of a colleague who was twice found 'drunk at the wheel'.

There's no "wheel" on a tube, lever maybe,so he was found drunk at the lever. I wonder how many people would be killed if he passed out at the lever/wheel.

I once argued with a Union guy that a fellow who was being reprimanded for drinking heavily on the job should have been fired. His reply was that the company "owed" the guy as he only drank due to the stress of the job.

I believe they offered him a dry-out program when all was said and done.

The logic is pretty simple. If the job doesn't require any judgement - it can be automated ... just not by robot vacuums.

Unions have become totaly corupt to their cores rubbing eblows with Oraganized crime and the Mafia

This seems like a plot on Yes Minister, no doubt Humphrey and half of Whitehall are behind it.

A “zero tolerance” policy toward drunk driving would see the motorman fired after his first offense. I don’t know how these union members escape criminal prosecution. If drunk driving of a car is illegal, how can drunk driving of a subway train be legal?

only in England you say. must be the middle eastern influence.

Unions...... defending incompetence and substandard performance everywhere!

"only in England you say. must be the middle eastern influence."

Hardly. Under Shariah rule, that driver would likely have been beheaded for drinking.

No, this is a symptom of an entirely homegrown British disease: the appalling death grip of the trade unions on public life.

Postal Terminal A is/was a massive warehouse down on the Toronto waterfront. I worked there in the 60's before I left TO. forever and moved out West. Petty theft from the Mails was fairly common in those days but not out of control.
Some years back I read that some postal union members were reinstated after the union brass went to task for them over being fired for theft. Apparently the theft was becoming noticeable to the point of epidemic that management installed cameras and caught the perps on tape.

They ended up being reinstated with lost pay since the union's argument was that 'they' hadn't been informed of the surveillance and therefore it was an infringement on the workers' rights.
Management capitulated and unions chalked up just a little more power on that ever sliding scale of rational.

Funny thing that rational... ten years back, two ex-lovers left in charge of the midnight run of the Prince Rupert to Queen Charlottes BC Ferry managed to miss a crucial turn in the inland waters and plowed the boat into a well marked island..it sank...along with two of the passengers never found. The union told them they didn't have to talk to investigators. The case took years and was basically glossed over in a way that only today's legal system can accomplish!

This reminded me of conditions I and others of my profession(drivers) were subjected to.....

This was during my driving phase.....zero (0) tolerance for alcohol and control substances....random urine test can detect ketones from alcohol use days after the actual use.

This fella was under the influence...DRIVING A TRAIN...UNDERGROUND....HAULING ONLY PEOPLE....not bottlewater or canned veggies or auto parts....a 3 alarm safety issue....

I suspect the passengers on the train had they known would have condoned his summary execution by firing squad right there on the platform. That said that is mob rule.....not rule of law and due process.

Imagine a robot vacuum the size of a subway train.

Besides, who cares if the train driver has had a few drinks. Its not like he has to steer, right?
