A legend in the field, a loser in his dotage.

Meh....

Perhaps a modern day Howard Hughes.

Peter Norton is still the devil incarnate.

Take the Avast free version. It's more than adequate and it works.

Avast/AVG free versions:

Avast won't do scheduled scans. AVG will (although you do have to enable it).
AVG isn't as diligent in real-time as Avast is.

I do recommend either Avast or AVG, if you have to go with the free versions it's better than nothing, but paying for a subscription has benefits for both products. Use either in addition to an anti-malware product like SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Both have free versions, but are worth paying for.

When I bought this computer(Vista) 8 years ago I went with the free Avast and other than adding memory it has all worked very well, touch wood.

cogeco security is also effective and is included in the pkg at no extra cost.

Apple, baby!

Blaming either John McAfee or Peter Norton for the feces sandwich their products have been turned into by their current owners is like blaming Steve Wozniak for the iPhone 6 case problems.

Scheduled scans are an anachronism. Like full file backups, they date from a time when filesystem filter drivers were hard to write and involved a huge performance hit. If you aren't turning your AV shields/screens/services off, you don't need to do scheduled scans.
