Regardless of who wrote the article I rejected the racist charge based on 'experience'. If every time you go to the north side of Winnipeg you are a victim of a member of a certain race it is not racism to be concerned when you see a member of that race approach you. In the case of Winnipeg I think calling Winnipeg racist is in effect blaming the victim. If the natives do not want to be 'discriminated against' then they need to clean up their act.

There's been another editorial coup at Maclean's, apparently. They've decided to push this "Canada is racist" thing. Its a d@mnable lie.

We should punish them with bankruptcy.

Nancy MacDonald appears to be yet another self-loathing Caucasian Leftie. She has deemed herself to be a hero for stating her beliefs that most white people are racists.

Whenever racism is discussed, if the person states or implies that the only kind of racism can emanate from white people, then I quickly ignore them.

As the reservations are voluntary rather than mandatory; I fail to see how anyone with a tiny bit of sense could conflate choosing to live poorly as a racism thing.

When the sociological problem goes into 'invisible issues' you know the emperor is wearing no clothes.

When 3/5 of the racism framing examples indicate FN on FN crime, it's hard to take any of the article seriously. The thesis is invalid even before the argument.

Another left-wing know-it-all who won't let the facts get in the way of a story as she wants to tell it. Once upon a time, Macleans was a respectable publication. Now it's outhouse material.
And people buy (into) this crap!

Parallel dimensions of own journalistic mind.

What really worries me is that when political correctness will paint every problem as a racists problem, it will become a cool rebel thing to be a racists. In calling other people racists there is a lot of hate or at least an attempt at demean other people. The reaction however faulty may go the other way and take pride in being "raciste" ( I guess that would be a hipster term).

Another point worth to mention is that when there is a systemic division of people eg. First Nation, Second Nation and some other nations, sooner or later there will be racial tensions by design.

Hey, I grew up in Winnipeg, St.norbert, St.vital.ft.richmond,ft.rouge,and North kildonan ,

While I was getting beaten up for my bus pass by indians, and getting call a white m&$@?r f$&@;( by the "Indian posse" I would like hear her answer to that, as to how I'm racist for having a bus pass, not to mention I lived in the poor neighbourhoods with them. Actually I lived with a native family who while they let me stay in their home there was always a mockery of how I had no parents and that white people are the true savages.

I went to a school "Churchill high" where the Indian posse would show up to pick fights all the time mainly with the white (and a few blacks) football team because we beat their team at their school the week prior.

I can't even begin to tell you the stories of pure white hatred that has been bred into these Winnipeg indians. They love white girls though for sure. But blacks philipino a,white males they hate them. My friend got money for his birthday went to polo park to buy a hat , jacket, and shoes.....when he called me from the pay phone near the polo park bus stop to tell me to meet him out front of Osborne and Morley bus stop ....he showed up with no shoes, no hat,and no jacket..a busted lip, and a black eye. They took his old jacket, his old shoes and hat that were in his bag, and took all his new stuff as well. He was crying, he was so mad. And that is how you create a racist. Yes the manitoba warriors struck this time, or was it the east side crypts? Not sure either way they were all mostly indians.the guys yes always more than one that took his stuff were "fkcuin Indians" as he stated it.

There is a racist problem here but its not the kind of racism that's being talked about. The aboriginal population has been subjected to something like 70 years of the white liberals welfare state, and surprise, surprise everything has just gotten worse. These same white liberals can't admit that their utopian policies and ideas have been an absolute failure when put into practice. So they just put the blame on everyone else.

When a woman is so profoundly unprincipled, unaccountable, and dishonest that even when she's been caught red-handed she won't admit to the truth, nothing she says or writes can be taken seriously. Macdonald thoroughly discredited herself in that interview.

Oftentimes when you hear a woman using "uptalk" -- raising the pitch at the end of sentences to make statements sounds like questions -- you're hearing someone asking you to please be complicit in not calling her out on her "truths" (wink-wink). For example, Wheeler pointed out the inconvenient fact that Rinelle Harper, whose assault was wielded in Macdonald's article as another talisman of putative racism, was brutally assaulted by her fellow aboriginals, not by whites, and that "her saviours were caucasian." When he asked "Can you explain to me how that was racist?" Macdonald replied -

Well, I think, for starters, I think Rinelle was her own saviour? And I think that part of the story gets missed by media?

Nice try. Wheeler asked a very straightforward question -- when an aboriginal woman is assaulted by aboriginals, and it's white people come to her rescue, how is that evidence of racism? -- and she completely changed the topic because she knew she'd been caught out.

Here's another example of Macdonald sense of having a right to be liberated - perhaps it's some sort of ovarian dispensation -- from the constraints of truth: The headline to the article -- which exists, it's indisputable, it's real, it's an in-the-world, hard artifact -- is:

Welcome to Winnipeg, where Canada's racism problem is at its worst.

When wheeler asked "In your opinion, is Winnipeg Canada's most racist city?", Macdonald replied --

"That's not what the headline says."

What can you say? People who are unconstrained by honesty, who don't feel any personal requirement to acknowledge the truth, should have no part in any public debate.

Macleans is a total rag.

EBD | January 28, 2015 1:23 PM | Reply

Btw, yesterday Macleans' Scott Gilmore, after hearing the Wheeler interview, defended Macdonald's piece. He says that if you, as a Canadian, "don't see the problem" after reading Macdonad's piece -- which, he says, "woke us up" and "felt like a slap across the face" -- then you're "part of the (problem)".

For people who took issue with Macdonald's wilfully dishonest piece, Gilmore writes,

…the slap was a personal insult. These people reacted like small minds always do, with ad hominem attacks, misdirection and false equivalencies….the most telling example was an interview Macdonald did with a Winnipeg radio host named Dave Wheeler (who works for Rogers, which also owns Maclean’s). There, she patiently listened as the host claimed Winnipeg couldn’t have a racism problem because some minorities are doing fine there…"

Wheeler never said that. Gilmore is a liar. He's defending Macdonald's dishonesty by publishing an absolute, bald-assed, blatant lie.

There are people, writes Gilmore, who acknowledge problems and "work hard to fix them", and --

The other kind, by contrast, are people like Wheeler.

Yeszz. Let's vilify the truth-tellers, and sing the praises of dissembling, indoctrinated SJWs.

I listened most of the way through before the repetitive evasion became too much. Winnipeg apparently is full of Indians who say rude stuff to other Indians and beat/maim/rape/kill each other constantly... and this is why Whites are raaaaacist.

In other words, the same old thing they always say. Soft racism of low expectations.

Macleans can hardly expect to be considered credible when they don't do their homework and allow this sort of stuff to be published not as just mere opinion but as fact and then defend it as such.

As for the Indians, we don't owe them squat but still they squat and lay blame on the white man for all their problems while, at the same time, taking handouts from the coffers of all tax paying citizens and it's never enough.

Hopefully one day some Government will revisit and end ancient treaties and all the rights stipulated therein and end the nonsense and colossal waste of money and abuses we keep hearing about on Indian reserves.

The same situation exists in the U. S. of A., in that blacks consistently do harm to their own and blame caucasions for their miserable existence. Both black and native communities need to step up and fix what ails them from within. If they aren't willing to make the changes necessary for a good life, nothing we do will amount to a hill of beans.

Jeez, I just finished posting this in another folder but it belongs here.

Interesting article from a typical white privilege far left apologist. So he is still blaming whites for everything and WE must work harder to eliminate the so called racism towards our native population. It never enters his mind that with even a minimal participation from the other side the perceived problem would vanish like it has with all integration except Muslims. We are already throwing 10 billion a year into the black hole called Indian affairs and the author does not recognize that it's being skimmed off by the Indian elite while the average reservation Indian does nothing except complain about their lot in life. Free welfare, free housing, free education through university, affirmative action for those seeking work and no one forcing them to stay on any reservation, but it's whities fault that they have no interest in advancing their own life with a eye on the future. It wouldn't matter what we as a society did unless there was a effort by natives to participate in their own betterment. They are stuck in the victims mode by choice and the left leaning media continues to fan the flames of victimhood. We even build a museum that tries to equate native victims with the jewish genocide. This is not reality but if the lie is fed and worshipped it becomes the new reality. There is a race based sickness in Canada as the author implies, but it's not driven by the whites, it's driven by the so called victims and professional apologists that parallel Al Sharpton in the good ol' USA. Same story......different victims, same nonsense. This is the other side of the story. The side that will never see print in a magazine like Mcleans, or CBC or any other rag from the left.

Yet, the article proves no racism and in fact proves the opposite. The only mistreatment going on is Indian on Indian. I have heard enough Indians in downtown Vancouver and Edmonton tell me to FU you white POS etc when I am not quick to give them smokes or loonies. I have no patience for fools who blame whitey for everything, particularly young, white liberal university types who themselves promote racism against whites and engage in the racism of low expectations. Wake up to corrupt media manipulation that sells copy and that has open hands for back door bribes. The "Indian Business" lawyers will be doing a Money dance.

It is time to have a serious debate about the systematic dysfunction of Canadian Indian Policy. The existing road leads to a cesspool of "predictable" problems.

I grow tired of the misstatements, half truths, omissions, prejudices and outright fabrications that are rampant in our society. We live in a time where people of good faith behaviour are swindled by those who think their self-serving code of behaviour entitles them to prey on others. A big part of our problem is that what is right in the common sense and handshake-ethics sense has been allowed to be re-codified by those who have no trouble injecting their personal views into legal and moral considerations. Thus we have courts where it depends on the judge you get, or we have a media story spun thus or that way conforming to the writer`s views. This has always existed to some extent but now is the rule of the day. I hate to say this - but the better liar, not the better person, usually wins nowadays.

I had a politics prof years ago who was decidedly left liberal. He warned how written, or codified as he described, constitutions could be very dangerous things that tend to take elective power away from citizens, opining the British approach of common law was a surer way of reflecting the values of society as it grew, without the need for bulkier and more interventionist written constitutional laws and practices.

He also warned his students about errors of omission which he would judge more harshly than errors of commission and judgement. So, if you left out a relevant counter argument to your thesis, you could expect a low mark. Despite his personal political views he judged students on the content of their argument, not the forcefulness of their views. I`m sure he`s appalled with what`s happening today.

I always appreciated that; I fear we have been overtaken by the lords of law, and common sense is the new superpower, as a friend recently joked. Thanks for letting me rant; yes it`s been a tough day.

MacDonald is clearly an accomplished liar and a colossal twat... a useful idiot for the progressive cause... Leftist activists like MacDonald love to spew their ideological repression... The goal for race hustling jihadists like MacDonald is not truth, but rather conformity, acceptance of the lie... she wants to force others to live the lies she tells, a kind of pressure tactic designed to force people into line with the false narrative that progressives tell... accept the lie that "whitey" is a racist or else you're a "racist"... evidence in this culture war campaign is unimportant and unnecessary, the lie is the truth to a progressive, and a lie to the infidel is acceptable to a jihadist. What a vile ignorant creature.

Maclean’s is hyperventilating as usual. For sure racism exists in Winnipeg as it does all over the country. But the bigger problem is economic and social marginalization of aboriginals, which are a significant part of the Winnipeg population. This marginalization is more a product of history and federal government policy going back two centuries than it is of current attitudes in Winnipeg or anywhere else.

Wheeler prepared himself well for the interview and exposed his guest and her employers for their shallow thinking and hysteria.

Gary D. | January 28, 2015 11:41 PM | Reply

I suspect that Macleans, like most paper magazines and newspapers, is suffering financially and is desperate to keep the bottom-line positive.

So, it looks like it has fallen back to the style of the 1950s National Enquirer.

As one writer said about 1,900 years ago, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
