Given family members are lawyers, didn't appreciate this. Also, had the good fortune to grow up in a community where my parents' friends included local lawyers of high probity and good standing.
One particular lawyer used to check my father's tax returns every year - I believe the 'fee' was a drink, usually offset by a 'favour' Dad did for this man. In the year my father became paraplegic, I was called home to do his taxes (and I have never really figured out why, given the family members and expertise back there) and this is many years ago. So I calculated the taxes the way my father had done for so many years, where he took Mum's income as his and then claimed her as a deduction. Then - just for the heck of it - I redid everything having each parent file own taxes. Mum owed; Dad got money back; overall, though, my parents received more that way.
Dad, though delighted at the thought of a refund, was not overly trusting, and so passed my calculations on to his lawyer friend. Comment back to the effect that "she's right, and I've forgotten how bright she is." One up for me!! But I went further and sent a letter to Rev Can as it then was asking for reviews of prior years as 1) obviously Mum and Dad should have been separated for tax purposes; and 2) we now had a disability certificate and it really should apply for some years back as Dad had been barely walking for some years - with two canes and regular sitting down - and only because their home was on a hillside and he wanted to stay there. Don't know what Rev Can looked at, but Dad got refund cheques all summer.
This is OTT in some respects, but the same family lawyer/friend took care of all Dad's legal issues after he died at no cost. Current family member did the same when Mum died, and have had occasion to thank other lawyers who have given of their time and services with no thought of billing. It's like any profession: there are honourable lawyers and there are those who are not.
ISIS men and all others like them must feel awfully inferior to those women whom they abuse, rape and murder. Shiny Pony once said that we in the west have to look at the root cause of their violence. I can only think it's because they have tiny dicks.
I think the McGill crowd (POC) might want to re-think excluding whites from their get-together. I didn't see any whites in the crowd when two gay guys were tossed off a roof recently somewhere in that cesspool called the middle east.
