  1. Chicago Tribune: “Unprecedented” rally is largest in France’s history, officials say:
“Over 3.7 million, more than the number the took to the streets after Allies liberated the city.
“‘It’s a different world today,’ said Michel Thiebault, 70.
“Illustrating his point, there were cheers Sunday for police vans that wove through the crowds — a rare sight at the many demonstrations that the French have staged throughout their rebellious history, when protesters and police are often at odds.
“Many shed the aloof attitude Parisians are famous for, helping strangers with directions, cheering and crying together. Sad and angry but fiercely defending their freedom of expression, the marchers honored the dead and brandished pens or flags of other nations.
“Giant rallies were held throughout France and major cities around the world, including London, Madrid and New York — all attacked by al-Qaida-linked extremists — as well as Cairo, Sydney, Stockholm, Tokyo and elsewhere.”

“Later, the ministry said 3.7 million marched throughout France, including roughly between 1.2 million and 1.6 million in Paris..”

  2. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour ridiculous assertion that Charlie Hebdo killers are “activists”, is a demonstration of being functionally insane.
It is a steadfast refusal to see objective reality for what it is, in favour of flogging an ideological viewpoint.

  3. It will be a return flight. What goes up must come down, unless the 40,000 km altitude isn’t a typo.

  4. During today’s broadcast of CTV’s QP, Robert Fife said that the PM’s press secretary Carl Vallée asked media who wanted to put questions to the PM had to submit the question in writing for approval before the press Q & A.
If it is true — which, given Fife’s penchant for portraying everything about the Conservative government in a negative light, is highly doubtful — IMO it’s a bone-headed move on the part of the press secretary AND the PM for allowing it. The majority of people are decrying & condemning recent events in Paris as an assault on our cherished values, the freedom of expression as well as freedom of the press, and the PM insists on knowing what questions journalists are going to ask him!?! Inconceivable.

  5. I saw this posted on another website. I wish like hell I can remember the link, because it is revealing. I had it cut and pasted though –
    =======================================================
As long as the Muslim population remains around or under 2% in any given country, they will, theoretically, be for the most part be regarded as a peace-loving minority, and not as a threat to other citizens. This is the case in:
    United States — Muslim 0..6%
    Australia — Muslim 1.5%
    Canada — Muslim 1.9%
    China — Muslim 1.8%
    Italy — Muslim 1.5%
    Norway — Muslim 1.8%
At 2% to 5%, they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups, often with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs. This is happening in:
    Denmark — Muslim 2%
    Germany — Muslim 3.7%
    United Kingdom — Muslim 2.7%
    Spain — Muslim 4%
    Thailand — Muslim 4.6%
From 5% on, they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. For example, they will push for the introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature halal on their shelves — along with threats for failure to comply. This is occurring in:
    France — Muslim 8%
    Philippines — 5%
    Sweden — Muslim 5%
    Switzerland — Muslim 4.3%
    The Netherlands — Muslim 5.5%
    Trinidad & Tobago — Muslim 5.8%
At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves (within their ghettos) under Sharia, the Islamic Law. The ultimate goal of Islamists is to establish Sharia law over the entire world.
When Muslims approach 10% of the population, they tend to increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions. In Paris , we are already seeing car-burnings. In Russia, grade-schools were attacked. Any non-Muslim action offends Islam and results in uprisings and threats, such as in Amsterdam, with opposition to Mohammed cartoons and films about Islam. Such tensions are seen daily, particularly in Muslim sections, in:
    Guyana — Muslim 10%
    India — Muslim 13.4%
    Israel — Muslim 16%
    Kenya — Muslim 10%
    Russia — Muslim 15%
After reaching 20%, nations can expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations, sporadic killings, and the burnings of Christian churches and Jewish synagogues, such as in:
    Ethiopia — Muslim 32.8%
At 40%, nations experience widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, and ongoing militia warfare, such as in:
    Bosnia — Muslim 40%
    Chad — Muslim 53.1%
    Lebanon — Muslim 59.7%
From 60%, nations experience unfettered persecution of non-believers of all other religions (including non-conforming Muslims), sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon, and Jizya, the tax placed on infidels, such as in:
    Albania — Muslim 70%
    Malaysia — Muslim 60.4%
    Qatar — Muslim 77.5%
    Sudan — Muslim 70%
After 80%, expect daily intimidation and violent jihad, some State-run ethnic cleansing, beheadings, stoning, and even some genocide, as these nations drive out the infidels, and move toward 100% Muslim, such as has been experienced and in some ways is on-going in:
    Bangladesh — Muslim 83%
    Egypt — Muslim 90%
    Gaza — Muslim 98.7%
    Indonesia — Muslim 86.1%
    Iran — Muslim 98%
    Iraq — Muslim 97%
    Jordan — Muslim 92%
    Morocco — Muslim 98.7%
    Pakistan — Muslim 97%
    Palestine — Muslim 99%
    Syria — Muslim 90%
    Tajikistan — Muslim 90%
    Turkey — Muslim 99.8%
United Arab Emirates — Muslim 96%

  8. Gabby
    All PM’s have done this.
The purpose is to not let the same question take up an entire press conference. …but then its not like the press would form some kind of Consortium or impose some kind of ideologic hierarchy on the press gallery or something.

  9. What I’ve seen of pressers with other PMs is a bunch of journalists yelling out questions, with whoever yelling the loudest getting to ask a question. When Mr. Harper became PM, he and/or his press secretary initiated a more orderly Q & A, which I appreciate, because I want to know who’s asking the question and which media outlet (s)he represents. I would prefer the PM allow more than his customary 4 questions. As for journalists having to get on a list in order to ask a question is not an issue for me, although it is for some journalists who refuse to get onto the list, like Toronto Star journos, according to Tonda MacCharles. What I object to is the purported demand on the PM’s part of wanting to know ahead of time what the questions are — if Robert Fife was telling the truth on QP yesterday.
BTW, no Canadian journalists seem to object to President Obama’s way of conducting pressers, where he actually chooses who gets to ask a question, then rambles on for 5 minutes answering it, and after the third question, the presser ends. The media, including ours, seems perfectly OK with Obama’s way. But then, he can do no wrong, can he?

  10. One of Canada’s finest writers reminds us that attending a rally ain’t the same as engaging in war.
“Slaughter is not quite the same as war. Call me a stickler for English usage, but I think a “war” requires engagement from (at least) two sides. The Paris authorities who use this word guerre so casually at the moment should be asked, persistently, what they mean by it.”

  11. EBD / Hans:
Ananpour once equated islamic suicide bombers to the early Christian martyrs.
    No, really, she did.
Had I not heard this with mine own ears, I wouldn’t have believed it.
An old friend of liberal persuasion gave me the heads up on what would surely be an excellent documentary.

  12. I agree Gabby. However Fife and the media consortium have a penchant for asking questions which have nothing to do with the topic at hand, they’d be asking him if he were going to call a Spring election, or if he’s in favour of legalizing pot.

“Warming an artifact of new instrumentation
One reason for the perceived warming, Hager says, is traced back to a change in measurement instrumentation. He says glass thermometers were was replaced by much more sensitive electronic instruments in 1995. Hager tells the SZ (my emphasis):
For eight years I conducted parallel measurements at Lechfeld. The result was that compared to the glass thermometers, the electronic thermometers showed on average a temperature that was 0.9°C warmer. Thus we are comparing – even though we are measuring the temperature here – apples and oranges. No one is told that.”
Hager confirms to the AZ that the higher temperatures are indeed an artifact of the new instruments.”

  14. Well, straying from the topic of the presser or asking silly repetitive questions is covered by the blanket freedom of expression and freedom of the press. And that includes freedom to ask stupid questions, like “Do you love Canada?” or “If you were a vegetable, what vegetable would you be?” It should be up to the viewer/listener to decide how relevant the media’s questions are, not the PM’s press secretary … if we truly adhere to the principle of freedom of expression/freedom of the press that many people are now standing for, with brandished pens and hashtags. By supposedly asking the media to submit questions ahead of time, the press secretary and the PM leave themselves open to the allegation — in such a case valid, IMO — that they are trying to “spin” rather than inform the public.
