Oxford Undergraduate Discovers Dickensian Injustice

“Coats,” she informs us, “are especially essential on nights out, because alcohol, although it makes you feel warmer, makes you more vulnerable to hypothermia.” From this, she concludes, “If local councils are looking for a way to protect young women on nights out, they ought to make a free cloakroom a condition of a club’s license.”

Because if nightclub cloakrooms insist on charging two whole British pounds, the nation’s womenfolk will simply freeze to death.

  1. I think failure to wear coats on cold nights may be natural selection at work. Don’t interfere with nature’s plan!

  2. Are there no sweaters? And union-made leg warmers and thick leotards — are they still in production? Oh, from what she wrote at first I was afraid that something had happened to stop them in their useful course. I’m very glad to hear it. I wish to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish, miss, that is my answer. I help to support the establishments I have named; those who are badly off must not go there.

  3. What’s to stop her from taking her coat into the club, and hanging it on the back of her chair?

  4. No chairs, or very few. Most of the space is a dance floor or standing room. (I think – it’s closer to three than to two decades since I was in such an establishment in England.)

  5. the horror , the horror
all the way from withstanding the London blitz to not having the sense to keep warm in two generations .

  6. “What’s to stop her from taking her coat into the club, and hanging it on the back of her chair?”
    Probably the doorman……..

  7. Quite right, K99, burkhas come in several different varieties, wool, cotton, nylon, etc., so the young nightclubbing lady will soon be warm and cozy and oh SO politically correct.
What type of beverages will they sell in Sharia compliant clubs? Fermented camel urine?

  8. The kind of person who works at self-entitlement and little else is the sort of person to think drinking to the point of fainting or stumbling out into the cold without proper clothing is a good idea. Why meddle with this? Mystery Meat is right. This is a natural plan. Steer clear of it.
