Putin is looking for (orchestrating) a distraction for his supporters as the Russian petro-oligarch led economy sinks. He knows that major mischief can be done while Obama resides in the White House. Expect lots of probing by air and sea.

But thinking logically what on earth would Putin want with a failing 3rd world state being over run by islamists, he can find that in his own back yard.
The french better have a strong guard on those assault boats they built for Russia but haven’t delivered. It wouldn’t surprise me if Putin tries to steal them out of french harbour. I mean, if the Israelis can do it, why not the Russians?

Russia already paid for those ships. Taking what is yours is not stealing.
I suspect it is a lot more complex to spirit away those assault ships than to take some relatively small FAC….for starters even skeleton crews would be noticeable.
Then there is the not so small matter of sea trials….
Even after sea trials and release from builders…new major naval units are a maintainance/operational nightmare…..fix….fix….fix….
Remember these particular units are built in France to be operated by Russians….

The Israeli ships had already been paid for too, but DeGaulle refused to release them due to the arms embargo. Same situation, except this time the Russians could easily put a small fleet in the Channel, including subs, and air cover. None of which the Israeli’s had.
…and sea trials have already been completed, with a mixed French civilian & Russian Navy crew.
