Max Baer was an American heavyweight boxer who won the world championship in 1934 by defeating the massive Primo Carnera, only to lose the title in his very first defense against against the "Cinderella Man," James Braddock. Most boxing historians attribute his lackadaisical performance against Braddock to the fact that Baer, an amiable, confident extrovert (not unlike Jethro Bodine, the character his son would later play on The Beverly Hillbillies, only smarter) was more interested in women and carousing than training.
In tonight's amusement en route to the tips, filmed the year before he won the title, the happy-go-lucky Baer, sporting the highest belt line you'll ever see outside of a Florida retirement home, performs a song-and-dance routine with a gaggle of chorus girls in The Prizefighter and the Lady.

A TransGas pumping station near Prud'Homme, 70 km northeast of Saskatoon. exploded Saturday morning, according to RCMP, and a fire continues to burn at the site.
Fire departments from Prud'Homme and Vonda are on scene and working with TransGas employees, but they have yet to be able to move onto the site and are working to contain the fire.

So, if you take away the graft, corruption, hype and kickbacks, it looks like the F 35 is a turkey that's just another show of disdain for the overburdened taxpayers.

Well, if you have some spare change in your pocket, about $100 or so, you can spend a night with David Suzuki. That is for two, you and your partner.
He is touring again( to save the planet).
Hopefully a farewell tour.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Minister John Baird are certainly correct to support Canada’s traditional allies in attacking the Islamic State (IS). It is such an unspeakably odious organization that it is beyond normal political discourse and as many as possible of its active adherents should be killed or otherwise eliminated as quickly as possible. Further, anything that seems to reactivate the Western Alliance, the most successful in world history, is a good thing. It has recently fallen to a somnolent condition even less fearsome than the former “coalition of the willing,” i.e. we’ll do it if we’re threatened ourselves but otherwise we’ll just be happy with a U.S guaranty of our national security. There cannot be any debate that the Islamic State is a sociopathic, genocidal, barbarous outrage to any concept of civilization, and should be physically exterminated. Some effort should be made to reorient surviving prisoners rather than simply executing them, but it is the duty and in the self-interest of all countries to apply the most ruthless and expeditious force available to eliminate this unmitigated evil.
,,,
Eventually, there will have to be some boots on the ground to make any sense out of Iraq and Syria in particular, but they should be Islamic boots. The West can’t occupy these countries and they can’t be too choosy about how they are governed. The Turks, Egyptians, and Persians have, in their past (and in the case of Turkey, not just in the mists of antiquity) some vocation to rule that area. We should try to unite the European Union, Russia, China, Japan and the North Americans to encourage them and the Saudis to rediscover that vocation. In the meantime, the West should supply the cutting edge to subduing Islamic State; on this, the government deserves our support.

Canada could upgrade to the "Super Hornet" version of the F-18 for a whole lot less money and a hell of a lot more reliability. That's what the US Navy did, and they've got a lot of experience in that area and probably know more than the F-35 MIC lobbyists.
Canada should also get a squadron of A-10s from the USAirForce. With F-18s and A-10s Canada could provide the technical support for Islamic ground forces on 'our side', anywhere in the world. The A-10 is one of the most underrated weapons in our arsenal.
The F-35 is a mistake. It's like the old joke about a camel is a horse designed by committee.
Gas prices across Toronto have hit an almost two-year low. A litre of regular gas was going for an average of 119.9 cents per litre on Saturday, down about two cents from Friday. It's the lowest price at the pump since December 2012, and way down from the summer's record high of over 142 cents per litre.
The price follows a steep drop in the price of crude oil —
Gas prices are not dropping here. How about where you live?
I have a dream ! Small town and only the tree huggers seem to get the ear of the local community rag. When it comes to (non) global warming I seem to be the only one with a opinion contrary to the Suzuki doctrines and I have been peeing into the wind for a couple of years now. My dream is for a little support, just once, to let them know that sane, rational people already know that Suzuki and Gore are flakes and the sky is not falling. Small dream........just once.

What does Claim Pending mean in the Detailed Travel Points Report?
Claim pending refers to purchased tickets for which a travel expense claim has not yet been processed by the House Administration.
Whoa now, these are expenses submitted and signed off by Mr. Trudeau himself. Why does it take a year to verify them ?
The other honourable Liberal members all have their travel expenses up.

Sure it has its problems, mostly due to the US government wanting one aircraft to do three different roles. And Obomber wants to scrap the A10.
There are no Islamic forces "on our side". The whole intent of islam is to exterminate our side, and any other side too. Other than that, I agree with your sentiments re F-18 and A-10.

The JSF F-35 is a glorified Swiss army knife - capable of many tasks but not performing any of them all that well.

As any skilled craftsman knows there's no substitute for purpose built tools.
I'd predict that these turkeys will ultimately meet their fate in a scrapyard sooner than later.
Contrast this with the B-52 - Still in service and being flown by the grandchildren of the original pilots,
NeoLuddite Re: F35. The B52 was designed solely as a strategic nuclear bomber, certainly not as a close air support asset, then a superior design, changing times, like the Vietnam War, and technology such as smart bombs gave rise to her use in a tactical role.
The F35 is a multi mission fighter and the only 5th generation available for sale at this time. Neither the Chinese nor the Russians are anywhere near developing a stealth, 5th generation fighter. The Super Hornet is fine for homeland defense but in collective security going forward, as are the Euro fighter and Russian aircraft, non-stealth aircraft continue to become more vulnerable as air superiority becomes harder to achieve with vastly improved AD systems coming on board over the next 10 plus years. 4th generation fighters such as the Flanker, Super Hornet and Euro fighter are already obsolete for all intents and purposes and cannot survive anywhere but in total air superiority environments.
We can't continue to rely on Americans crushing third rate air defenses with Wild Weasels and yes, stealth bombers. We have to be able to protect our pilots and like many other missions shouldn't be expected to assume the Americans will clear the way first. We took a big chance in the Balkans in the 90s with our CF18s. If IS gets any SAM's then our CF18s could be in trouble.
I too take accusations of hot engines with a grain of salt. That could never be covered up and would make the aircraft non-stealth. The F35 isn't the fastest because it doesn't need to be the fastest, it may not even be the most maneuverable, but it doesn't need to be. There's a price for having every capability as the F22 cost bears witness.
A Flanker cannot beat the F35 in a dogfight. The F35 would have already shot the Russian down before if got near her. The F35 is the only decent 5th generation option, since the US won't market the F22 (too expensive anyway), and everything else is expensive junk, especially the Euro Fighter, which would probably end up costing just as much as the F35.
Buy her or don't buy anything and work on drone fighters, don't waste a penny on expensive and obsolete projects like the Euro Fighter. By all means grab some Super Hornets if possible for homeland defense and sovereignty missions; and, no don't buy Russian aircraft!
Canada blew a chance in getting in on economies of scale production with the EH101 marine helicopter and risk making the same mistake with the F35 decision. I will have to hear a lot more negative news before arguing the government should reconsider her.
Only in Canada you say?
Canada is finally back to where it was in 1967:
http://ottawacitizen.com/news/national/bob-plamondon-canada-is-finally-back-to-where-it-was-in-1967
Oh wait, that's a bad thing?
"While the rest of the world is mired in deficits we are talking about tax cuts. But before we pop champagne corks, how about this for a reality check: for all our progress, the financial position of the federal government is not much better today than what it was in our centennial year.
In 1967, servicing the federal debt cost us 1.8 per cent of GDP. Accumulating debt and high interest rates caused that burden to peak at 6.5 per cent of GDP in 1990. If we were paying interest costs at that level today, the bill would come in at $122 billion. We actually paid $28 billion in interest costs last year. At 1.5 per cent of GDP, that’s below 1967 levels.
While our overall financial position today is largely comparable to our centennial year, how the federal government spends our money is different. The portion dedicated to social programs (Old Age Security, children’s benefits, Employment Insurance) has risen by almost 40 per cent. The portion going to transfer payments for other governments has more than doubled. But the relative cost of running other government programs, including the military, has been reduced by about 1/3 from 1967 levels. That means individual Canadians are getting more from their government in 2014 than they did in 1967, and it is costing them less.
So yes, as we approach our sesquicentennial there is cause to celebrate our modest financial success. But let’s not get carried away and launch another spending and borrowing binge when our 150th birthday party is over. The hangover is rarely worth the excess."
Are you listening Justin? It took us 47 years to dig out of the mess your daddy started.
The damage from an underground fire in downtown Calgary Saturday night was extensive, "completely destroying" the electrical infrastructure involved, says utility company Enmax.
The fire has affected some landline 911 service in the downtown core and could leave as many as 5,000 people without power for up to a week. The fire also damaged a fibre optic cable, though it wasn't immediately clear what services that may have disrupted.
The province issued a critical emergency alert Sunday morning at 10:07 a.m. local time to let residents know some landline phones in the downtown core will not be able to access 911 as a result of the outage.

There are no Islamic forces "on our side".
In the context of the ages old conflict between the Christians and Muslims to control the world, that's true.
Black's comments relate more to present day geopolitics. In that context, the predominately Christian West has traditionally allied with Saudis, Turks, Egyptians, and Persians in situations of mutual benefit. The important point Black makes is that troops on the ground must be Muslim troops. Therefore it's in the West's best interests to support those allies in restoring order in the Mideast and seeking out and destroying jihadis.
