It's Probably Nothing

Don't panic. It's really, really hard to catch.

A second Dallas hospital worker who provided care for the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the U.S. has tested positive for the disease, pointing to lapses beyond how one individual may have donned and removed personal protective garb.

It's not clear how the second worker contracted the virus. Authorities declined to say what position she holds at the hospital or the type of care she provided to Thomas Eric Duncan, who was diagnosed with Ebola after coming to the U.S. from Liberia. Duncan died Oct. 8.

Officials have said they also don't know how the first health worker, a nurse, became infected. But the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said "an additional health care worker testing positive for Ebola is a serious concern."

Plenty more at Instapundit: If you say the government is too big, the response is Oh, you want to starve infectious-disease control for funding? but when you give them the money, they spend it on lesbian-obesity studies instead, and are woefully unprepared for the kind of actual crisis the government is supposed to protect against.

CALM YOURSELVES. The Experts Are In Control:

That's right. They "monitor" Ebola exposed health workers all the way to the departure gate.

Sure, but when one of Ebola patients turns out to be an obese lesbian (it's inevitable) THEN we extremist knuckle-draggers will have some real soul-searching to do.

Let us not forget, this was the same hospital that sent Patient Zero home with a 103 temperature. So adhering to ID protocol may not be something they are good at. Otherwise known as whistling past the graveyard.

I'm hoping that these people who caught this are really, really bad at their job. Because if not, this could become... ugly.

I am betting the CDC wishes that they had their credibility back. Obama doesn't care about his. The IRS doesn't care either. The press doesn't care. MSNBC could double their ratings in a week if they moderated their politics, but it is not about ratings with them, or credibility either.

But the CDC, this is the real badoinkadoink. History is full of plagues that have wiped out huge swaths of civilizations. It needs to be contained, and to contain it, the CDC needs the trust of Americans.

From the article:

"Based on statements from nurses it did not identify, the union described how Duncan was left in an open area of the emergency room for hours. It said staff treated Duncan for days without the correct protective gear, that hazardous waste was allowed to pile up to the ceiling and safety protocols constantly changed. DeMoro refused to say how many nurses made the statement about Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, but insisted they were in a position to know what happened."

Ok, I feel a little better now. Typical hospital run by fat, forty year old ex-cheerleaders, don't have a f-ing brain cell among them, every day a new story. Its beatable if somebody with a clue organizes it.

I predict a vast influx of MEN into the medical arena if this gets at all serious. Somebody has to scream at these middle management snow cows and bang their heads until they start THINKING instead of gossiping and surfing EBay all day long. That means men. Mean ones.

Tim@ 10:04 - Obama had better care about this. Ebola will stop at his door.

If the disease continues to expand on foreign shores (read US) it will destroy governments exposing their inability to protect ordinary citizens.

Wanna bet the investigation into what happened will be hampered by missing emails, destroyed hard drives and Executives pleading the 5th?

Yes. Ebola is really hard to catch. You need significant contact with bodily fluids. (Ebola being a hemorrhagic fever, that's obviously hard to avoid if you have to treat a patient) Rigid quarantine is effective in stopping the spread, it's just cruel to the victims and in the West we're not used to making hard decisions in a crisis.

Michelle Malkin has an excellent piece up on CDC mission creep, Yunno the usual stuff like motorcycle helmets and school playgrounds.

But my favourite creepy mission is this mortal battle for SSNRs:

Social norming” in the schools. The CDC has funded studies and campaigns “promoting positive community norms” and “safe, stable, nurturing relationships (SSNRs)” in homes and schools. It’s the mother of all government values clarifications programs. So bad attitudes are now a disease. Again, I ask: Why is this ....

http://michellemalkin.com/2014/10/14/the-centers-for-everything-but-disease-control/

Jet fuel on sale, rental cars 90% off.

This is how civilizations die, they confuse their self imposed artificial standard of morality with survival. While it may be cruel to isolate an infected individual, it is far more cruel to infect all the care givers. When gorillas get Ebola in their group they disperse. Gorilla populations rebound after an Ebola event because they naturally quarantine themselves.

One wonders if the reason more societies haven't advanced further than they are is it due to the lifeboat mentality of large numbers of individuals who cling to the group for their survival instead of being self sufficient. Large numbers of anything doesn't necessarily indicate a healthy thriving community or species, all it means is that current resources are sufficient allow the numbers for the time being.

Ebola and Global Cooling will be the great culling of the world's population leaving only the self sufficient if the current elite ruling structure is left to their own devices. Take your fate in your own hands, prepare for the worst and don't believe any assurances.

"If you want your Ebola, you can keep it." —M. Savage

Symptoms of the disease include projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea. This must make it somewhat problematic for healthcare workers to avoid contamination.

If you're a Lib-Prog Supremacist intent on a totalitarian take over of society, who do you attempt to liquidate first? The answer is you bushwhack your most formidable opposition. Thus, a Texas outbreak of Ebama.

I believe your right but I hope you're wrong.

The real story about inept dealing with the patients.....sounds like total incompetence at the levels above front line workers.
http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2014/10/15/Nurses-We-Were-Told-to-Call-Authorities-for-Ebola-Protocol

Exactly right. Larger the government, larger the incompetence. In a government environment, no one wants to be blamed for any breach of protocol or wrongdoing that might endanger their job or promotions, so they just pass the buck around and govern by consensus. It is a good strategy, safety in numbers.

Just wanted people who prayed for my sister to know she died today. She never regained consciousness. She was 52 years old. A kind person who cared deeply for her family & even being unwell helped as much as she could. She is survived by her husband & 3 children.Lori was smart & was trained as an engineer . My gratitude for those who prayed for her id heartfelt. God keep you all in His hands. My one solace is she knew Yeshua being with my brother & Mother now.She was a wonderful Women who had a kind heart. Its us living that will hurt the most. Thank you all. Sincerely. Reg Haines. Will be going to Kamloops BC for the funeral.

I will miss her deeply. Sorry to intrude on the thread.

It might be just me but.....
I know Mr Duncan went to an apartment where his lady friend resided. He was there for over three days.
A good Samaritan donated the use of a large house in a gated community (it was reported). This for the lady friend and others. They had vacated their apartment after the Duncan infection.
I maybe missed it, but what are the reports on their present health?

Oh, you want to starve infectious-disease control for funding? but when you give them the money, they spend it on lesbian-obesity studies instead."

Or transvestite beauty pageants.

So sorry for your loss. Will continue to pray for your family. May the Angels lead your dear one into paradise.

I don't know why passport documentation from flights originating to North America are not vetted now. Someone flying to North America from Liberia, via Brussels or other connecting flight should be stopped prior to getting here. Can you imagine ISIS members deliberately infecting themselves with Ebola , then flying over here to wait until a fever develops before going to high population centers to deliberately spread the virus. That is scary.

So gorillas have more sense and brains than Obama. I can agree with that.
Rev Dream - I'm sorry to hear of your loss, she was far too young.

The current unofficial idea in management is that the PR Dept is all-important, and the workers are there
to take the blame. The events at Dallas Presbyterian Hospital show this in operation, but the principal
is ubiquitous. It shows what happens when we have two generations without a serious war; this attitude
tends to be a quick casualty in combat - which is why the c**t-generals in Washington will be gone
fairly soon when ISIS extends its reach to North America.

Re CDC: and we can be sure that all of the programs which they funded so lavishly resulted in transfer
of funds to Democrats, who just happen to be donors to the Democrat party.

Corruption kills.

Obamba's war on America is going well.

What's scary is supposedly trained hospital staff and management going into PR-coverup mode and letting infected material pile up in a hospital room. Scary is a nurse who's supposed to be on official quarantine for a fatal infectious disease getting on an airplane. Scary is that they probably x-rayed her shoes and have a naked scan picture of her too.

Plain @ss-covering and flat out incompetence will kill more people here than any terrorist ever will.

Here's a thought. Call your local hospital and ask them what THEIR plan is in case this comes to Canada. Maybe call the fire station and the cop shop too while you're at it.

Then after you stop the fear sweat, go buy some gloves. Most of the money for this kind of thing is wasted or diverted to other projects.

I'm pretty sure Hamilton Ontario Fire Department has maybe five full-on Level B suits, and zero Level A moon suits. Because hey, what could happen in Hamilton? Right? That Phantom guy, what a paranoid tinfoil hat type.

Just imagine the conversation taking place in the Dallas Texas mayor's office today. I can hear it now: "What do you mean the funding for Level B containment suits was used on office furniture? Well, how many suits do we have then? Wait, FIVE? We have FIVE in the whole department? And they're twenty years old?! WTF?!!!!

Good thing all those MRAP vehicles are NBC resistant eh? Give the mayor a chance to get out of town alive, that will.

Rev, very sad to hear about your sister. Hope your health is good as you take care of your family.

Did Obama-Cares know that Glen Beck lives in Dallas?

-

Glenn Beck said Wednesday that four of his Dallas-based employees live in the same apartment complex as the second health care worker who tested positive for Ebola.

“You’re listening to a broadcast that is 15 miles away from that hospital. Fifteen miles,” Beck told his radio audience. “We now have four — four, count them, four — employees that just this morning have come to work and said, ‘The guy who just went in the hospital, that’s my apartment complex.’”

Beck said the complex is “massive,” with over a dozen buildings, but he is unsure of what to do.

“The CDC should be telling people [what to do in this situation],” Beck said. “I’m a businessman. I have four employees now that live in that complex. They don’t live near that apartment. I don’t think they’re infected. It doesn’t seem reasonable. What do I do? This is the problem with the CDC. What do we do? We’re not experts, you nincompoops. You are!”

Beck read the message his employees received, saying cleaning was underway in all areas of potential contact:

So if an infected medical worker gets on a crowded commercial flight, does this mean the transmission has become airborne?

Here's a nasty thought.

The whole Dallas sewer system downstream of that apartment complex just became Level A contaminated. For sure. Because Patient Zero was definitely contagious when he was in that apartment, and he definitely took a dump in there.

Oh, joy.

Going to take a lot of Fantastic to clean that. Wonder who gets to make that plan, eh?

Only if she has a transmission in her luggage.

Say, does anybody know how long Ebola stays viable on an exposed surface, like a floor or a door knob? Minutes, hours or days?

If only there were a large, lavishly funded government agency that could research this information and provide it to the public in a timely fashion.

My condolences on your loss; may you somehow find both strength and peace during a difficult time.

Jo Nova has a good summary of the situation, including recent evidence that it can be transferred through the air.

http://joannenova.com.au/2014/10/ebola-is-airborne/

Phantom...There is a news report that Belleville General Hospital in Ontario has a suspected case of Ebola. I can with confidence say that if that is indeed the case we should be very concerned. That hospital does not have the containment facility nor the protocols to effectively stop a contagion.

How quaint, the authorities are discovering that the Ebola virus doesn't act according to ideological constraints...

Yep, you can't wave your magic ideological wand and make it all disappear. The african Ebola virus becomes a lethal threat to the "Obama-Nation(tm)" presidency.

My son did a literature search on this virus some years ago, apparently it made it's way into the human population as the custom at funerals was to touch the body, as a way of saying goodbye.

Part of what’s fueling the deadly outbreak is funeral rites that involve touching or kissing the bodies of the deceased; dead bodies can still host the Ebola virus and spread the disease to the living.

https://www.internationalsos.com/ebola/index.cfm?content_id=410&

http://www.msdsonline.com/resources/msds-resources/free-safety-data-sheet-index/ebola-virus.aspx

MODE OF TRANSMISSION: In an outbreak, it is hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected as a result of contact with an infected animal (15). Person-to-person transmission occurs via close personal contact with an infected individual or their body fluids during the late stages of infection or after death (1, 2, 15, 27). Nosocomial infections can occur through contact with infected body fluids due to the reuse of unsterilized syringes, needles, or other medical equipment contaminated with these fluids (1, 2). Humans may be infected by handling sick or dead non-human primates and are also at risk when handling the bodies of deceased humans in preparation for funerals, suggesting possible transmission through aerosol droplets (2, 6, 28). In the laboratory, infection through small-particle aerosols has been demonstrated in primates, and airborne spread among humans is strongly suspected, although it has not yet been conclusively demonstrated (1, 6, 13). The importance of this route of transmission is not clear. Poor hygienic conditions can aid the spread of the virus (6).

INCUBATION PERIOD: Two to 21 days, more often 4 – 9 days (1, 13, 14).

COMMUNICABILITY: Communicable as long as blood, secretions, organs, or semen contain the virus. Ebola virus has been isolated from semen 61 days after the onset of illness, and transmission through semen has occurred 7 weeks after clinical recovery (1, 2).

Sorry to hear of your family loss Revnant Dream.

Cheers

Hans Rupprecht, Commander in Chief

1st Saint Nicolaas Army
Army Group “True North”

Barack Ebola said the virus won't likely appear in the U.S., so there's nothing to worry about...

Revnant Dream, sorry to hear. May the Lord comfort you and give you strength.

Revnant Dream. My sincere condolences. I just said a prayer for her and you too.

Prayers are still with you, your family and sister Lucky Lori, Rev.

Sorry Revnant Dream, no disrespect intended, I left my "Mutual" other name on by mistake.

Revnant Dream. My sincere condolences, my prayers are with you and your family.

Revnant Dream, my deepest condolences for you and your family's loss.

Condolences Rev.

"Nosocomial infections can occur through contact with infected body fluids ..." but
with projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea that may be difficult to avoid.
Presumably the nurses in the Dallas Presbyterian Hospital took the obvious
precautions.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family - just 52(!) way too young to die.

Nina Pham's boyfriend has it too so....
Max 13 day incubation for her. (first contact 28th)
She was sick on the 10th.
He's in on the 15th.

Asymptomatic transmission proven.

C'mon folks the CDC and NIH know that with a 3% genetic shift (announced in April) in vitro viability, incubation time, transmission vectors, etc. are UNKNOWABLE and will only become discernible through field observation and anecdotal evidence.

They knew this the whole time.

What do you think they told the president?

@Reverent Dream: Lost my sister at the same age; ovarian cancer (more lethal than Ebola). We were not nearly close enough. Empathy, condolences, and prayers.

Gender isn't the issue here, but ideology and competence. After all, Obama and CDC Director Tom Frieden, are men.

So is this guy, Stephan Monroe, Deputy Director for the CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases: "I want to underscore that Ebola poses little risk to the U.S. general population ... very remote possibility that one of those travelers could get Ebola and return to the U.S. while sick."

Very sorry to hear of the loss of your sister... 52... still so very young... terribly sad... God bless her.

c'mon, the flu is a MUCH more dangerous killer, according to authorities, dontcha know!

Of course, President Obongo wants to share the misery with those from his home continent.

Obongo just continues to confirm more and more to the perpetually uninformed, that he is a dangerous and out-of-touch velvet dictator

Dear Cleveland,
We allowed a nurse who treated the Ebola victim to travel to you fair city just 2 days after the victim died. Our bad. Sorry for the inconvenience. We'll send some bodybags.
Sincerely,
The CDC
