Michael J. Totten - I say "almost" because air strikes by the US-led coalition are putting a crimp in their plans, but IS rules a huge area straddling two large countries and somebody will need to go in there, clear ground, and hold it if anything substantial is going to change.

About Kate
Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

After reading the link, I conclude that Kate is right. Bomb the oil wells. Make sure they never produce another barrel of oil. Once the easy money supply is cut off these countries will be less of a nuisance.
It's a dog's breakfast - best thing u can do is support the Kurds to the hilt.
They need to raise the number to four or five cups of tea (with a bathroom break of course) instead of just three. Better tea and higher water temp is just as effective as higher pay and better equipment.
I wonder how long it will be before ISIS gets their hands on some surface to air missiles and starts shooting back at the various air forces who are currently having a field day.
Of course we have to put "boots on the ground", every military tactician since planes were invented knows that, only fools like Obama imagine anything can be accomplished by air strikes only.
So, we stir up the wasp nest some more with air strikes, piss off more Muslims the world over, and see even more jihadists flock to the cause. Perhaps Westjet should start a Calgary to Fallujah daily flight to help out.
The big flaw in our tactics is,once we DO put troops in, we will force them to fight by the rules of chivalry, and again we will see our own soldiers called war criminals by our politicians and Press.
This is going to be interesting, brave soldiers, led by milquetoast politicians, versus dedicated savages.
Yeah, it will be a long war.
I tend to agree. Let the military people decide what needs to be done, let the politicians give them what they need to get the job done and in the meantime STFU. You don't win wars by discussing your strategies in the media, especially the vast media we have today.
As Canadians we need to ensure we have the right people in government as we deal with this scourge of the 21st century. The US has a big problem with leadership, let's not make that mistake here.
Agreed, we can't do any good in this Sunni/Shiite civil war. IS soldiers cannot be defeated solely with air power, it will take the heels of boots on the ground to dig in.
If that happens, which we can no longer fully discount, it will be ironic to watch Obama re-invade Iraq.
If I were a military planner, i'd put troops to support the kurds on the front line and relentlessly carpet bomb the interior. There is no one left in the interior of their territory worth saving anyways.
$25B training the Iraqi Army. Perhaps a quick read of this (http://www.meforum.org/441/why-arabs-lose-wars) article would have been useful before committing the money?
Before we go over there to fight islam we should be clearing them out of our own country first.
I wouldn't put a red bone hound, let alone a Canadian troop on the ground as long as that pack of fools in the Whitehouse have any say in setting the rules of engagement. Its an invitation for our guys to get smeared.
Totally! We need to beef up our Intelligence, dig into the dark corners, find the slime, this is a war of a different sort,we have been sleep walking while they've been settling themselves in and in many cases supporting them on welfare.
Actually air power can win this war. Just keep sending it long enough. The methods are sound. It's the will that's lacking.
Valerie Jarrett (the WH Iranian) has a plan to reset the Iran equation.. Iran could send in Ground troops and become the USA/ME white knight...The ME alliance will kill the militants, that makes the odd man out to be Israel.. I guess Israel could move into Putin's tent. The end game will be determined by Russia
The ground troops will come from Turkey or Iran and it will be Putin that will make that decision. We Americans are on the side lines with Obama & John Kerry's incompetent State Department most likely taking orders from Putin.
... put troops to support the kurds on the front line and relentlessly carpet bomb the interior.
correct.
Turkey and Iran are competitors. The region used to be run by the Turks. Despite their religion, Arabs, Persians and Turks do not like each other. Back the Kurds, enable them to forge their own country, taking chunks of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. It will be an ally.
How can these people even exist? I thought President Merkin
Muffly declared them destroyed. He just changed their name
like North of 60. They are still there and they are a
bigger threat because Obonzo failed to follow up with an
enemy that was at one time nearly defeated.
By declaring the war over and the enemy defeated, he allowed
them to recruit and come back stronger than they ever were
in the Bush years.
I'm old school...how do we fight a war when the creeps don't wear uniforms?
Viet Cong anyone?
We win this war by keeping muslims out of the western world. Who cares what they do to each other over there, so long as they aren't here? The problem is that there are tens of millions of muslims living among us in the western world, with millions more showing up all the time and no government appears to even realize that this might be a problem.
Bluetech
Invariably this leads to a policy of "kill 'em all and let God sort them out."
Viet Nam, the Crusades, the Mongols......
It's just they way things go.
minuteman
The problem is PC multicultism and creating a voting block...and a big measure of stupidity....as big a cultural hurdle to us, as the arab culture that keeps them from winning wars.
"best thing u can do is support the Kurds to the hilt."
Yes. Back up the Kurds and give them weapons.
Kind of like my point Sasquatch, you bomb the living shit
out of them, you raze their cities, you carpet bomb them
until you break their will!
Most German and Japanese civilians did not have the stomach
to fight. Yet they suffered for the actions of their leaders.
We have two choices; One is to play the politically correct
games the pussies in Israel play, or you bomb them into the
stone age. If Hamas is hiding in hospitals or schools, you
bomb the crap out of them! You do not drop leaflets or
send text messages warning them an attack is coming! That
is complete lunacy.
If two or three such attacks occur, there will be civilian
casualties. After that, the civilians will stay away from the
Hamas terrorists. They all know who the Hell they are!
Just like in Northern Ireland everyone knew who the IRA
terrorists were. If you want stop high speed freeway
pursuits in the interest of public safety, bring back the
fleeing felon rule and cut them down in a hail of lead!
I guarantee that after 3 or 4 televised freeway chases
ended this way, high speed chases would be a thing of
the past.
Exactly! When you fight wars, you fight to win, like the allies did in WWII.
sasquatch, "The problem is PC multicultism and creating a voting block...", for sure. But, when these scum bags cause enough mayhem here in the homeland the regular folks will demand something be done or vote for someone who will do something other than visit mosques and kiss their heinies.
Ken, can you imagine what would happen in America if suicide
bombers began attacking theaters, restaurants and schools?
Even if out political leaders were paralyzed by political
correctness, the people would act.
Admiral Yamamoto told his superiors that any attempt to invade
the American homeland would result in "A rifle behind every
blade of grass." I our leaders and our authorities were
afraid to act, there would not be a Muslim alive in this
country in 24 hours.
Leo nails it. We either fight to win in the shortest time using every means at our disposal, with the fewest casualties among our troops .... or go home. Let the Generals and the Admirals fight the war and keep the politicians out of it till it's over.
The Indians (Red dot type not the Woo woo type) had a quaint
custom of tossing a dead mans widow on his funeral pyre.
The proponents of this "Custom" were arguing that it was
an old tradition and that he should not do anything to
change it.
British Governor General Sir Charles Napier had this to say:
"Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs."
These battles can be won, if a leader has resolve. Napier
was dead serious. Douglas MacArthur Sr. was highly effective
in dealing with Muslim terrorists in the Philippines. He dug
pits and lined them with the carcasses of pigs, lined them up
and machine gunned them.
It is all in how you word the message!
