Islamist insurgents in Iraq have seized the city of Tikrit, their second major gain after capturing Mosul on Tuesday, security officials say.
Tikrit, the hometown of former leader Saddam Hussein, lies just 150km (95 miles) north of the capital Baghdad.
Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki has vowed to fight back against the jihadists and punish those in the security forces who have deserted.
The insurgents are from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).
ISIS, which is also known as ISIL, is an offshoot of al-Qaeda.

A wise US President would be considering aiding the Kurds. A few SF Teams, a lot of intelligence support, a little ammo, and spare parts would do a lot to allow them to stabilize Northern Iraq. (And Kurdish Syria)
Unfortunately we do not have a wise President. His administration blew the Status of Forces agreement in 2010. A US Mech Brigade would provide a lot of confidence to the Iraqi Army without even needing to directly engage the Islamic Jihadists. The intelligence, lgoistical and planning support the US Military can provide would have done much to prevent this situation from ever occurring.
Instead, Libya, Syria, and Iraq are devolving into Somalia-like failed states. Egypt had leaders smart enough to throw out the Islamists, despite US entreaties to the contrary.
And the Iranian Centrifuges continue to spin…

The bodies have been left in the streets and in the houses by the hundreds, without pity. The regular forces and the army have also fled the city, along with the governor. In the mosques, they cry “Allah Akbar, long live the Islamic State.” Qaraqosh is overflowing with refugees of all kinds, without food or lodging. The check points and the Kurdish forces are blocking innumerable refugees from entering Kurdistan. What we are living and what we have seen over the last two days is horrible and catastrophic. The priory of Mar Behnam and other churches fell into the hands of the rebels this morning. . . . and now they have come here and entered Qaraqosh five minutes ago, and we are now surrounded and threatened with death. . . . pray for us. I’m sorry that I can’t continue . . . They are not far from our convent. . . . Don’t reply. . . . ”
