It's one month from the first Saturday in May and with today's Santa Anita Derby behind him, a chestnut colt owned by small time breeders, out of a claiming mare and $2,500 stallion, trained by a 77 year old former jockey based at a quarter horse track has emerged as the Kentucky Derby favourite.

My, oh my - meet California Chrome.

That's quite a break from the crowd coming out of the final turn.

$2500. fee & claimer mare? I love to read that sort of thing...

Why Rex Murphy and I relate so well to Justin Trudeau:

He's a Shiny Pony, I yearn for the day people call me a Shiny Hippo. An old Hippo, but Shiny!

I don't know much about horses but have seen enough movies to know that this is a great story.

If this is the future, I think it's time to dig in and make a stand. Enough.

Since concealed carry became legal in Chicago shootings have dropped to the lowest number in 50 years. Proves nothing says Mayor and Police Chief who disapprove of new ordinance. just good youth education and good police work. Yeah......right........

Went to Santa Anita just a couple months ago. Beautiful track, beautiful location beautiful day. Sadly there were maybe a couple thousand people there (on a holiday Sunday). The horse racing industry might not be dead - it maybe something worse... A zombie industry.

As a lover of handicapping that saddens me. But I also see no way to save it nor do I think it deserves to be saved. Not unlike traditional Christian denominations, it seems to have lost its reason for being.

I still can't figure out why anyone would vote for Hillary in 2016. Here's one reason they shouldn't.

"Not unlike traditional Christian denominations, it seems to have lost its reason for being".

The traditional Catholic Church has not lost it's reason for being it's just that people have lost their ability to reason and are lost.

Friday Morning on Vancouver's Global News, their TV & Movie critic, Dana Gee, appeared in a segment. Not sure what you expect from your local morning show but I'm kind of looking for something soft & pleasant to welcome in the new day. Ms. Gee had other plans for this day. After telling us that David Letterman was a political genius and how much she loved Jon Stewart, she then went on to besmirch Donald Rumsfeld and essentially imply that anyone on the Right in America was an absolute idiot.

WTF?!

So I left a comment on Facebook for her, asking if she felt it was appropriate to attack 48% of Americans on a Canadian news channel this early in the morning. I also asked her if it was okay for me to vote for Stephen Harper's Conservatives in the next election.

This generated a torrent of personal attacks against me. One guy in particular got under my skin. I wrote him back, telling him that his comments so far made me think that he was "an ignoramus of the highest order". I added that he could prove me wrong by answering a simple question: To put himself into the spokesperson position for each of the 3 major Canadian political parties and write 3 or 4 sentences explaining why citizens should vote for their party.

Pretty simple, right? No response from him so far. I'm convinced that most people who support the NDP or Liberals couldn't ever reasonably explain why conservatives vote the way they do. They simply aren't capable of understanding any other side of a political argument beyond what they've learned to parrot. It's really quite sad and pathetic.

Why would you would let these twits get under your skin ? It's like arguing with little children. There's no satisfaction in it.

Holy smokes, it's like the horse had an extra two gears.

I was inside this church a few years back when it hosted an open house. This is sad beyond words.

Gord Tulk You've dated yourself by knowing the word 'handicapping'. Remember when paramutuel betting on horses would finance Ireland's health care system. When governments around the world decided that lotteries would be the tool to capture the dreams of gamblers 'an afternoon at the track' passed from the lexicon.

Quite apart from the shoddiness and paucity of the research, what media bias?

This is the lead story up at Drudge at time of writing.

Apparently, there has been an exponential increase over the past decade in the number of "felt" earthquakes in Oklahoma. After acknowledging that "most" earthquakes occur naturally (brilliant! Who knew?), the "effort" then becomes a generalized guilt-by-association-and-innuendo hit piece on the oil and gas industry. By my read, it's not even a discussion about the oil and gas industry in Oklahoma, and contains that ubiquitous environmentalist/media catch-all reference to "scientists" (who, exactly?).

It rather seems to me that actual, you know, evidence from Oklahoma would be most helpful, given the sensitivity and importance of the issue. How about at least providing some references for further reading and citing what work is being done to verify/falsify any such relationship in the case of Oklahoma? Oh, I forgot -- that would be a lot like work.

Actually, an economist named Brad Schiller tried to explain it in March of the same year. He said the shortages were the result of Hugo Chavez’s war against the Law of Supply and Demand."

Anyone else notice the unusual amount of press Chris Hadfield is still getting? Shuttle launches and space station this and that long ago lost their special news appeal and are now mostly footnotes in the media. So why is Hatdfield still getting so much attention???

I'm starting to wonder if the media party isn't setting him up for a starring role as a liberal candidate in the next election..... Any bets?
