  1. Spokesperson for the of US state department. The only problem with Twitter diplomacy is that only twits tweet and I don’t think Vlad is one.

  2. As a Canadian, of Ukrainian ancestry, I’m thinking, that since the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 has been ignored (where Ukraine agreed to give up its nuclear weapons, for assurances of protection of its territorial integrity — signed by Ukraine, the U.S., the U.K., and Russia), perhaps a dozen or two, short-range tactical battlefield nukes, would be a deterrent to any advance of Russian armies into Ukraine.
Perhaps they saved a few (just for emergencies), or perhaps they can pick up a few, um, somewhere. Perhaps they are already there. Or they should be. Just a thought.

  3. I think the #statedeptspox says as much as it can. It really is a pox on the country but to spell it out?

  4. Saddest thing is that at least 40% of the US population, mostly under 30 and all Obama voters will look at that and say, ‘I hope this works, lets all retweet everyone!’

  5. As usual in 21st century global politcs, there are no white hats in the Ukraine mess.
Vlad is no poster kid for morality and is a defacto dictator with a billion dollar bank account in some ask no questions banking county, the punk the the Uke neo-nazi insurrectionists (paid by CIA and EU) ran out of the country was a Mob boss ripping off the people as badly as Putin – but he WAS elected. The new unelected insurgent regime are not legitimate either and their leader is a shill for the EU banking cabal which Ukrainians have stated they do not want any part of. Now we have that intellectual midget in the oval office escalating things with pointless military provocations.
Best sit this cluster frig out and tell all sides to calm down before the nukes come out (that is what the UN was created for but the UN vipers are backing EU plans to Balkanise the Ukraine and exploit it with un repayable infrastructure loans, for a cut of the action) As far as I can see we have dangerous greedy children on all sides of this playing with fire under the cover of very nebulous morality – no one is “right” in this mess but Russia does have the moral authority to protect its black sea ports and to secure its borders and allies borders from insurgent Ukraine and foreign forces – other than that we should butt out and let Vlad and the Uke EU-Nazi regime duke it out.

  6. Do ya think the effect would be better if everybody tweeted their displeasure AND lit a candle?

  7. I’ve never heard anything so silly from you. How could this possibly work without a chant for the swaying crowd to croon?

  8. Did she attach another picture of her giving a thumbs up? She should include one with a boob flash, it would help it go viral.

  9. Fer chrissakes shut the hell up you ranting imbecile! It’s like this: Ukrainians showed up to riot. Putin doesn’t approve of such behavior from his vassal state. Everything else is bullshit.
If you exclude hashtags, MREs and ludicrous scenes such as the US ambassador personally directing street traffic at Maidan, the EU/US/West has done BASICALLY NOTHING to back what you’re describing as an “insurgent cabal”. And that “5 billion $USD spent on destabilizing Ukraine” thrown around.. it’s a total figure spent since 2005, most probably down the corruptocrat/NGO salary drain.. ZERO to do with Maidan.
Gawd I just want this thing to be over if only to stop seeing so much stupid commentary. Turn off RT and check out youtube.com/vicenews for quality coverage.

  10. Well put, Occam.
Kneejerk tribalism has always been with us and brings out irrational hatreds among the weak-minded.
While Europe remains largely silent, preferring to let this local issue play itself out, there’s plenty of bluster coming from this side of the ocean.
The US has continued to use NATO for its own expansionist worldview (Wolfowitz Doctrine), even though its current president does not believe in American exceptionalism, and the US’s Cold War propaganda proves it really is unable to do anything about the situation because of its incredible debt.
There may not be any good guys in this situation, but it is real and really, how does it affect North America other than its politicians fearmongering its populace?

  11. syf, syf syf
Did NATO invade Poland, or Slovakia, or the Czech Republic or Romania …?
Equivalency/projection arguments are BS. Czar Putin has already showed himself to be a duplicitous mainiac who uses, again and again, his tried and true script of; create an insurgency in the target country, then lie about it/blame others, followed by border military “exercises,” followed by invasion (and we’re supposed to be grateful because it’s “peaceful”), followed by confirmation they lied about everything. They just push start again – in Georgia, in Crimea, now in Eastern Ukraine, then all of it, and soon in Estonia and the other Baltic republics.
Megalomaniacs don’t stop, they have to be stopped. I think Putin, along with his fellow oligarch and orthodox church allies, pine for the return of mother Russia (notice I didn’t say Soviet) – and then where? Appeasement and isolationism are precisely the wrong tools to deal with them.
First, it must be made clear nobody believes the Russian innocent act. Second it must be made clear Russia will be denied access the European oil and gas markets if they invade Ukraine. Third, Putin must understand if that happens his neck will be on the line.
I think Putin has been put off somewhat by the harsh criticism and warnings from the US and Europe. But, he still believes he can get away with his expansionist ambitions and will still try later when resolve weakens. When he does, he must pay dearly.
Changing the channel to the sins of the West is BS. Russia is in the wrong here, period.

  12. that would cover most politicians on both sides of the aisle.
Occam, the problem is that I am the only perfect person in the world/sarc

  13. So, I take it you’re in favour of US imperialism? Or at least willing to turn a blind eye to the Wolfowitz Doctrine and its specific mission to isolate Russia, a country whose president supports family values and a country with a 13% flat tax. Guess that makes the heavily-indebted and morally decadent US look bad by comparison.
Your sympathy for the Slavic peoples of Ukraine is truly touching, but I doubt its sincerity.
I did state at 10:36 that there may not be any good guys in this situation of a dispute between brothers and neighbours tied with a common history. I still don’t know all the details, but I do know Ukraine has a hard time paying its bills. You may have not heard, but Putin encouraged the EU to help Ukraine pay its bills after Russia withdrew its offer of a $15 billion loan to Ukraine. Russia had been sending natural gas at a discount to the world price, but still owes Russia $2 billion.
Not sure if anybody owes you any money, but if somebody owed me money and refused to pay, I’d be pissed.
A couple of weeks ago, Ukraine closed its borders to anybody with a Russian passport, aged 16-60.
So, if Russians cannot get in, I’m guessing it’s militias of long-time local residents acting in Eastern Ukraine. Militias that are tired of the corrupt parade of leaders the people have voted in since 1991. Militias are allowed there, I gather.
Elighten me. What’s happening in Ireland?

  14. Not sure what problem you have with the Orthodox Church.
The Bishop of Rome is one of many bishops of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
There’s some legitimate question as to whether St. Patrick of Ireland considered himself under the Bishop of Rome’s See, as much as Rome would like to claim him.
    From wiki:
St. Patrick is also venerated in the Orthodox Church, especially among English-speaking Orthodox Christians living in Ireland, the UK and in the USA.[104] There are Orthodox icons dedicated to him.[105]. (which you can see in the link below).
    http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=st+patrick+of+ireland&qpvt=st+patrick+of+ireland&FORM=IGRE.
I have always been taught St. Patrick affiliated himself with the rest-of-the world church outside of Rome. If Rome wants to claim him, too, I have no problem with that.

  15. SYF – here’s a piece of useless info to make your week. St. Patrick was not Irish – he was Scottish – from Ayr.

  16. Not sure if anybody owes you any money, but if somebody owed me money and refused to pay, I’d be pissed.
Funny thing about hypocrites, they never seem to remember their own like actions. Specifically, several billions for wheat…like all socialists, they think the world owes them a living.

  17. Guess people remember where he did his best work 🙂
    Cheers.
Stadi … didn’t Ukraine used to be the bread basket of Europe?
Why do they need to import wheat? Answer that one and it may give you a clue why there’s so much grief there now.

  18. Here we go again, Kremlin’s resident suka got a new issue of Pravda to work with.
“So, I take it you’re in favour of US imperialism?”
Yes absolutely if only to keep barbarians of mooselimb or Siberian persuasion at bay.
“Or at least willing to turn a blind eye to the Wolfowitz Doctrine and its specific mission to isolate Russia, “
Woolfowitz deserves a Nobel peace prize for that. Unfortunately mainly enemies of civilization have been receiving it lately.
“a country whose president supports family values and a country with a 13% flat tax. Guess that makes the heavily-indebted and morally decadent US look bad by comparison.”
A country that leads the world on abortion rates, spousal abuse, alcohol consumption (also among minors), STD infection rates and death from illnesses that for decades have not been a problem in a civilized world. A country where only the mooselimbg population is growing.
“I still don’t know all the details, but I do know Ukraine has a hard time paying its bills. “
Because from the moment she gained her independence Siberians have been meddling in Ukraine’s affairs.
“Not sure if anybody owes you any money, but if somebody owed me money and refused to pay, I’d be pissed.”
Newsflash for you: even when countries go bankrupt they do not get invaded, well unless they are unfortunate to share a border with Siberians.
“A couple of weeks ago, Ukraine closed its borders to anybody with a Russian passport, aged 16-60.”
Pity they haven’t deported all as well.
“So, if Russians cannot get in.”
Of course because Spetsnaz would have problems infiltrating Ukrainians border. Because Pootin hasn’t planed it well ahead of time. Typical russian demagogue.

  19. … didn’t Ukraine used to be the bread basket of Europe?
Yes, until Russia got hold of it. Anyway, what does Ukraine have to do with Russia stealing wheat?
The US feeds the world while Russia begs, borrows, or steals their pottage. Esau never changes.
