  1. Well one could say, “Let the bastards freeze in the dark!” but that would be unseemly and cruel…!
Extending the hand of help to those in misfortune would appear to be taking the high road.

  2. That’s the classy thing to do. I’d like to think that the CAGW crowd would do the same but hoping for storms to hit places that vote wrong and the “No Pressure ” campaign indicates otherwise. 6

  3. if this was primarily a publicity stunt, I’d expect the Uni of NSW to be on the hook for rescue costs…

  4. The Canadian equivalent of this impending disaster would be trying to traverse the Northwest Passage in a great big clipper ship with Mr. Suzuki at the helm. Their leader, professor Chris Turney, is a paleontologist. He is an activist, comparable to our own fruitfly man.
If a busload of Darwin awards are earned on this trip, it would be a shame . But some are richly deserved. The group in this you-tube video put out last night end fit that category. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1js8Qxh4PdI

  5. I forsee day after day of hurry up and wait, nice day will dawn, all systems go, oopes too rough, next day, stand by….
4th day, Russian crew without vodka, sense of humour for Australian nitwits.. fading
Day 6 Pravda reports real situation as explained by crew
Day 8 crew gives rescuers ultimatum
Take these losers away or overboard they go….
Day 10 head of expedition thrown off ship.

  6. ” global warming is an important story, and the trip will give Fairfax Media a rare opportunity to visit the continent most acutely affected by global warming ”
” one of the coolest things to me about our trip is that we are called Antarctic expeditioners.”

    Also, an interesting twitter feed.

  7. Anyone know the price of a cruise from Ushuaia to antarctica ? These free loaders get all the good freebie. Leave them there.

  8. Good on ya, Anthony. And lets remember that this is not exactly the safest situation, OK? Plenty of time to take the piss AFTER things have sorted themselves out.

  9. What the he!! do these morons expect Watts to do?
Stop torpedoing their BS? As if that will get them out of the jam!
These self promoted a$$holes know everything … do they not? Forecast away.
    Stupid stupid stupid
I hope the booze runs out soon.

  10. The antarctic looks like a good place for a hovercraft, assuming one had sufficient range.

  11. It appears the sensible thing would have been for the ship’s “party of fools” to have contacted Anthony Watts before hand for a weather forecast.
However, sensible isn’t in their vocabulary.
Hopefully, they can be rescued by the helicopter pretty soon. I don’t think that Russian ship is going to last much longer.
I’d like to see what the U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker can do but how fast can they get there and how thick an ice can they handle.
How long will the ship’s crew and passengers last on top of a iceberg?
This is starting to remind me of that famous old film, “Scott of the Antarctic”. They all died.

  12. Why would they go out at the beginning of the summer rather than the end? It is common sense that there is less ice and it is softer then.
This Dec.6th article from the Sydney Morning Herald is interesting.
One of the journalists/scientists/tourists remarks, ” Antarctica is climate change ground zero. The data that scientists gather will play a crucial role in future climate models.”, and this priceless gem, ” one of the coolest things to me about our trip is that we are called Antarctic expeditioners “.

Time to put on the tinfoil hat. One of the best things about conspiracy theories is that research is not required, in fact it is frowned upon.
These people are being murdered by ‘big oil’ or martyred by ‘big green’.
This cruise is led by Chris Turney(our Suzuki), backed up by our Lizzie May (Janet Rice). The passengers include many environmentally conscious media luminaries (our CBC including George Strombo being cool, et al). The ship is Russian and not suitable for the voyage.
Think about it. Quit smiling, think a bit more.
Is it just bad luck, or a fiendlishly clever plot?

  13. Lets hope the people get out of this jam. Don’t expect them to learn anything though. They will die in a glacier believing the magic gas C02 will save them.

  14. “I’d like to think that the CAGW crowd would do the same”
Actually, they are for radical population reduction.
It’s amazing how few people who know that fact seem to remember it.
In fact, CAGW policies in Britain kill 40-60 thousand people every winter through privation and have done for over half a decade.
    They’re flat-out murderers.
No mercy says I, taking the high road means saving the victims that CAGW kills by rooting against CAGW supporters not saving these dangerous A-holes so that they can jump on the next inhumane bandwagon and rack up even more souls of better people than themselves.
Don’t forget these are the same people, environmentalists, that killed 100 million by banning DDT.
Look up the symptoms of malaria and dengue fever and think about what a horrible way to die those diseases are.
It’s like being stretched on a medieval rack while having boiling water poured of you.

  15. If the worst comes to the worst, they would be well advised
to start including a few vegans as meat extenders early on.

  16. Only psychopaths, blind partisans and religious fanatics on both sides of CAGW think that witch burning is a suitable solution to defeat ones “enemies” instead of scientific debate and political pressure.

  17. Let them bask in the splendor of global warming, the ice will melt shortly and they’ll sail on. Perhaps Big Al could do a fly over and blow a bit of hot air to warm their stupid arses.

  18. I disagree. They’re killing real people.
You’re drawing a false equivalent here, Dumbass.
Only a Shit-for-Brains who just discovered blogging recently would think that the CAWG side can be convinced with scientific debate when the CAWG Warmistas declared over a decade ago that ‘the Science was Settled’ and the ‘Debate is Over’.
Does the term ‘Denier’ mean anything to you, hmmm?
Some in the thread above seem to want to treat these people as though they have clean hands.
They Do Not have Clean Hands.
Next time an incandescent light bulb burns out and you can’t buy a replacement you think about how well political pressure and debate is working against the Religion of Gaia Worship.

  19. I think you have some serious anger issues or you’re incredibly immature so I will ignore your insults.
Rescuing others is just the right thing to do. It is what normal, rational people do in life threatening situations: Paramedics, fire fighters and good Samaritans don’t check voting history or police records before helping victims. If that doesn’t convince you then consider this: a ship full of CAGW true believers stuck in the ice while attempting to document ice loss is a powerful symbol – a Xmas gift even. Advocating for the death of men, women and children you disagree with (who are not directly responsible in any way for the atrocities you list) becomes a media symbol of how awful conservatives and Conservatives are. BTW, I’d suspect most of those paying guests are just regular people like the rest of us who had no idea how dangerous their trip could become.

Look, Asshole, you started it and now you pretend to be the ‘mature one’? You hypocritical dirtbag.
Everyone can read what you wrote above.

I can just see you rescuing Nazis when the 3rd Reich is still in full swing and gobbling up more of Europe.
These people and in the middle of what clearer minded folks like me see as attempting to push the Global Warming lie and people, REAl PEOPLE, are going to die this winter and next winter because of them.
The only consequences these killers are possibly going to face are the injuries from misadventure that their propaganda antics have led them to. Rescuing people who are not in the midst of committing a crime against humanity is the normal thing to do.
These people, like the ones who attempted to pirate an offshore oil platform but Russia released before Christmas, are going to be heroes to their ilk and the beat will go on.
You are obviously here to undermine resistance to these envirofreaks and spare them from the consequences of their own evil.

  21. They went at the start of summer because that’s when the winds are lightest. Where they are is windier than Lethbridge, average 60 knots in late summer. 300 km/h winds are not unusual there.

  22. The report described the ship as being off the north coast of Antarctica. I would have thought all the coasts would be considered north. Can anyone with more knowledge of the situation shed some light?
