I donated; did anyone else?
Steyn obviously loves his neck of the woods in New Hampshire but I wonder if has any second thoughts about immigrating to the US? I started wondering about that when he covered the Conrad Black trial. The federal prosecution of Black didn’t resemble a country where the weight of the government treads lightly on the individual.
I would have. But I don’t donate to such causes anymore – since the Warman fun back in 2007/2008 (or whenever it was).
Too often, these things end up being settled with both parties agreeing never to discuss the issue. Thus, you never know if your donation went to actually scoring a point for a just cause. In such cases, all that likely results is that the status quo is maintained with some lawyers getting richer in the process.
This is especially true in the US – with their American Rule for the payment of legal fees and having the most corrupt legal system in the English-speaking world and all.
Call me old fashioned, but I still like that bit about justice not only being done – but being seen to be done.
As the trial of Conrad Black has shown, there is really no guarantee of justice in the USA.
That’s what scares me about the Mann vs NRO/Steyn trial.
Reading Monbiot’s “Hockey Stick Illusion” shows me that Mann has no case.
The other thing is Mann vs Tim Ball in BC. What has happened or is happening there?
I donated a fair amount of money to support it but can’t get an email out of Tim about the progress.
Only the lawyer told me on the phone that there are enough funds donated.
Sorry, I meant Montford’s “Hockey Stick Illusion.”
Its not so much Mann’a good name but all the other good names that have hung their hat on him.. He can waltz into the office with a big grin on his face and slap a note on the principals desk, flip him the bird and walk away..
All the right people say he is untouchable so as far as they system goes he is untouchable..
But..
There is always the chance that all the other people might come to the conclusion that its time to come clean and let the chips fall where they may.. A ready made scapegoat, wrapped up and delivered is hard to resist when you yourself are over extended and far more involved than you would like..
It could be you, it might be you.. With good ole Michael Mann still smiling with that note in his hand, flipping you the bird this time..
The big scheme of things can change like the wind when it comes to covering your own rear end.. Lord knows its hanging in the air..
Yes.
Mark Steyn has expressed an interest in moving back to Canada, yes. I don’t know him personally and he is
discrete about his personal affairs, but he did choose a part of New Hampshire which probably afforded him
maximum privacy for his family. Medical care may also have been an issue. Also, his family is older now
and he doesn’t need to fear state kidnapping of his children as he did in Canada. He has also written
that the near future of the US may well be violent – he has noted the quantities of weapons which his
neighbours possess. And he may well have concluded that the US “judicial” system is more dishonest even
than its Canadian counterpart.
While Mark Steyn is a witty commentator, as is widely acknowledged, he is also perhaps the best reporter
currently writing in English. His coverage of Conrad Black’s trial was masterly; and, if there were any justice
in this world, would have earned him a Pulitzer Prize for reportage.
The Just-Us system, as described by Steyn, is classic government by thieves.
The courts being the last resort for a citizen seeking justice, it is obviously useful to the Kleptocracy if using and being abused via the court system further impoverishes the citizen.
The process is the punishment indeed.
Hence the offence offered to citizens by the Obama/Reid decision to abuse the senate rules in their desperation to stack the courts.
I spoke to someone who seems to have close knowledge of the Mann vs Ball thing. Last I heard there was a discovery, Mann’s team faceplanted as would be expected, and Mann’s been delaying endlessly ever since. No big surprise.
I usually support Mark by purchase of books, T shirts, etc.
Have sent some bucks to NRO as well.

Yes.
So Mann can start over and sue but will he? Now that the big free speech and civil rights groups are involved he may decide the it’s not worth the hassle. Too much unwanted publicity and Mann knows he may have to produce the Hockey Stick data in discovery (which many CAGW climate skeptics were hoping to see).
Basically it’s the same situation as in Steyn’s Canadian Adventure. It’s easier and less stressful to legally harass and shakedown obscure people and smaller organizations. If there is a new suit then they might only go after CEI and the original article Steyn was commenting on.
BTW, I wouldn’t be so quick to extend an invitation to Steyn to return to Canada. Like one of those ravens in old tales, Mark’s presence foretells the death of conservative governments. Correlation is not causation, of course, but why take chances. Canada can’t afford a LPC-NDP coalition government. Well, western Canada cannot.
Instead…maybe his friends in the CPC can hire him and he can have diplomatic immunity. Musical attachĂ© specializing in show tunes?
