  1. Doug – I think you may have meant to write “annus horribilis”. But your version is much funnier!!
    Merry Christmas!!

  2. Sixty years and she’s still on duty, and will be until the day she dies.
She has known only fleeting moments of freedom and anonymity in all her years, that’s brutal. She deserves respect.

  3. QE II is a keeper…well done and balanced message; without the sense of being ‘monarchial’ but rather on a person to person level.

  6. PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
    IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED
We, the undersigned citizens of Canada draw the attention of the House to the following: THAT : as individual Citizens of Canada WE do NOT enjoy the protection of “PROPERTY RIGHTS” within the Constitution of Canada ! hence, THE LAW of Canada!
THEREFORE: Your petitioners call upon Parliament to forthwith, incorporate and entrench FOREVER , individual “PROPERTY RIGHTS” INTO THE CONSTITUTION OF CANADA.
Santa didn’t find me a (loaner) modest mobile home sponsor to which I proposed to use while I gathered signatures across Canada for the Petition shown above!
Therefore, I have decided to recruit the MOLNAR clan as they gather today (BOXING DAY 2013 annual event)at our home here in Woodstock, Ontario, for their signatures to be presented to the HOUSE OF COMMONNS in the New Year by my MP Dave MacKenzie.
Right now the only sponsors volunteering to help me get across Canada are DONKEY owners!
GEEZ Kate, I need an SDA “miracle” mobile domicile which my wife can drive, while I walk, petition in hand or ride a damned DONKEY!
Make no mistake SDA readers the petition will be presented to the HOUSE in 2014 even if it only has MOLNAR clan signatures on it!

  8. I used to think that QE11 was a good queen. But I don’t think I do any more. Over the last 50 years she has let her ministers totally destroy the country and sat back and watched it happen. Who ever is the next monarch will likely be the last, because the eastern Europeans and muslims who inherit her realm will have no interest in having an Anglo Saxon/Norman monarch.

  10. She doesn’t have legal power but she does have moral power. She sets the tone for the moral of the country. She gets face to face meetings with her ministers on a regular basis. She can tell the PM things to his face that the rest of us would like to from a position of moral authority. Maybe she does and they don’t listen, but the country has gone to hell in a hand basket in the last 50 years and it will never recover. If I was her I would try to stage a coup and overthrow the ministers. If she I am sure the people would probably follow her. Cromwell overthrew a king and Charles 11 overthrew Cromwell. It is not like there isn’t a precedent.

  11. Minuteman;
Your moniker is a bit of a contradiction, no?
Reading of history leading to the American Revolution certainly shows how the top down form of governance favored by the monarchy is a fail. Canada should have joined the 13 Colonies and shown a desire for true self government.
The idea that the monarchy has any vestige of creditability died many decades ago. The form of government they established in Canada leading to 1867 doomed our country to a mentality that set us back for untold generations. Rather than personal responsibility Canadians as a rule look to government to solve their problems. Very sad.

  12. I remember the enthusiasm when she became Queen. This was going to be a new Elizabethan era and England would arise to be strong and powerful again.
What a let-down it has been.
I’ve often wondered could she have any influence when she has the one-on-one meetings, but I don’t think there is any fire in her.
And, then again, we don’t know how often she did try.

  13. She has single handedly given away the largest empire in human history. Her ancestors must be spinning. SAD.

  17. What is bipolar disorder?
    http://www.nami.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Mental_Illnesses/Bipolar1/Home_-_What_is_Bipolar_Disorder_.htm
A patient with bipolar disorder has severe fluctuations in mood (poles) – from depression to mania. Usually, moods are normal in between the peaks and troughs.
Bipolar disorder has nothing to do with the ups and downs we all experience sometimes; it is much more severe, debilitating and incapacitating. Fortunately, it is treatable, and with proper care and the right medication patients can perform well at work and academically and lead full, productive lives.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness2 (MANI) says that over 10 million people have bipolar disorder in the United States. It adds that more than half of all cases start when patients are between 15 and 25 years old. Males and females are affected equally.
Recent developments on bipolar disorder from MNT news
Incidence of bipolar disorder in the U.S. – researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health, Genetic Epidemiology Research Branch, reported in Archives of General Psychiatry that bipolar disorder rates in the USA are higher than anywhere else in the world. About 4.4% of US citizens have had a bipolar disorder diagnosis at some time in their lives, while the world average is 2.4%.
Canadian rates have remained the same for the past 10 years. … About 1% of Canadians will experience bipolar disorder.
    http://wptheme.cameronhelps.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Mental-Health-Statistics.pdf
Canadians don’t seem as driven by media paranoia as Americans, this may have something to do with the lower rates.

  18. CT, you make some very valid points, but I think a strong case can be made for Canada and Britain having very much more responsible governments over the last several hundred years than many republics, like France Italy, Germany (until post WW11) an now the United States.
Democracy is the best form of government in theory. In practice a strong case can be made for it not working all that well, especially when you have universal suffrage. Most people aren’t capable or running there own lives, yet we give them a say in running a whole country. Most of the western world is on the verge of bankruptcy because people want governments to babysit them. I see no sign that people are going to suddenly realize they were wrong and vote for change.
I would have no problem living in a country where I had no say in politics if the leaders ran a competent government and left me alone. Britain has had governments for the last 25 years that have effectively been treasonous. Sure the people got to vote them in but it really doesn’t make any difference.
