About Kate
Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

Shocking. Or something. . . Definitely something.
So if Rob gives an inspirational speech at an addictions conference will he be forgiven like George Smitherman..?..
Oh crap. Justin will have to up his claim to keep up
If he'd injected cocaine at a safe injection site, would that have been OK to his leftie haters?
No one ever talks about the job he does as mayor. There doesn't seem to be anything to criticize there.
I hope he wins next time and give the finger to local reporters.
Oh, no.
Whatever guarantees they made you, Rob, they were all lies. Nobody loves a traitor. You're going to prison, Doug's career is over, your job is Olivia Chow's for the taking, Kathleen Wynne will be premier as long as she cares to be, and Justin will laugh all the way home to 24 Sussex.
Just to add to the fun, the Star will surely soon get a Pulitzer Prize, just like the Calgary Herald for their efforts in destroying a real reformer---along with a fat subsidy to keep them from going up the spout.
Thanks for nothing.
And yet ... Denis Coderre is the guy to bring back "trust" as mayor of Montreal.
They attacked him endlessly - finally something stuck. Opps, he's human. He'll be re-elected. I'll vote for him - again.
(sigh)
Not angry. Just disappointed.
Very.
Okay. Can we remove Justin Trudeau for the same thing? He freely admitted to being a pothead. And he's an unaccomplished moron.
Gee is the right wing gonna endlessly defend him still?
A real man would have admitted it and resigned long ago.
Get rid of the turd.

Actually, there's plenty to criticize there too: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2013/11/05/john-moore-rob-ford-never-was-rob-ford/
The scarey part isn't that Ford has a drinking problem or smoked crack....the scarey part is how much better a drunken, obnoxious, overweight alcoholic is at running the city of Toronto than his predecessors.
Wait til they elect Olivia Chow as the mayor some time in the future. Folks will be begging Rob Ford to come back......they'll even offer him a 40 oz if he accepts.
So he's not a US citizen and he has tried cocaine; that makes him qualified to take over for Obama.
You'd think the left would want him as PM now.
Ok sorry not dark or gay enough, but still, being a drug addict has got to have some electable points for the left.
What he needs now is a little fat hoodlum to call his imaginary son. Preferably black of course with a grill and some “beat on craka” utube video’s.
"Not angry. Just disappointed."
Me? Just angry. Not disappointed.
I'm angry for the way they hounded the man relentlessy. As they say let he who is without sin...
Disappointment? I'm sure he's disappointed enough with himself. If he's wise he'll learn and if he's got backbone he'll come back. I for one hope he does.
Make no mistake. I am not excusing him and I think General William Tecumseh Sherman had the right idea about the press. Ford, however, has problems and that has leaked (though not largely of his doing) into the public life. That needs to be dealt with.
Casting stones? I hope there are enough rocks for Olivia Chowcesceu et al. We need a whole quarry for people like her.
"If he'd injected cocaine at a safe injection site, would that have been OK to his leftie haters?"
Well, it would probably be better for him, as he'd be speaking with people who could direct him where he could get some help, but no, it wouldn't make it ok for him to be mayor.
You'd be hard pressed to find any "leftie" voter want a heavy drug user for mayor... but apparently the right has no problem voting for a guy who gets so sh!tfaced that he blacks out, smokes crack, and calls those who report about him doing so "maggots" and "pathological liars".
You guys really shouldn't vote. Or use sharp objects. Or be in possession of matches.
How about the people who wanted to vote for George Smitherman, a noted drug abuser AND @$$hole? You know the type.
I'm only slightly surprised, always figured Ford for cocaine use, never thought he was dumb enough,or drunk enough to use crack, especially around someone with a camera.
The most disappointing thing is how Ford lied repeatedly about it,almost as bad as Lance Armstrong. If he'd come clean in the first place this would all be over and forgotten by now, as he'd have had several months to be a "victim" of drug abuse.
Now we know why he didn't sue the Star, as an innocent man would have.
Maybe Slater can mention that quote in the Bible about "false gods", there seems to be a lot of them around these days,on all sides of the political spectrum.
What a stupid man. With all crap he had to put up with to get the mayor's spot...you'd think he'd be smart enough to stop doing drugs. I just hope we hold all politicians who hold office to the same standards all the time. No excuses.
If you think doing crack cocaine, while in office, then lying about it repeatedly is the same as openly admitting to being a recovered drug addict prior to running for office - you might be a conservative.
All this "crack" and "alcohol" talk makes me want to go get some. Hes just a bit of an eccentric, most geniuses are....The left should view him as a model citizen. Someone with substance abuse problems, that through hard work and perseverance, became mayor of a city! And we all know the only reason he is on drugs is because he was bullied, and society made him do it.
Unfortunately,I just heard it on ABC Radio news from Wichita Kansas.
Drudge has it up too.
This has legs bigger than I thought.
It makes one wonder what Sir John A. might have done in a drunken stupor.
I must agree with the assessment of James R. Halifax (place name or family name?) at 1:31, but it does seem surprising that in a city as large as Toronto, it was not possible to find a more coherent and articulate conservative to fight the power.
This story has been just too f*cking funny to follow recently.
I'm not talking Ford himself, I am talking how desperate for a REAL conservative the partisan right is that ANYONE could support this lying, entitled, gluttonous, crack-smoking, alcoholic sack of sh*t keeping his job.
Maybe Ford was able to be an effective conservative with the city's books because, as mayor of Toronto, his loyalties are not permitted to be stolen from his constituents and instead dedicated to a political party.
Think about it.
The Lefties should have a hard time with this, after all they're the idiots who push for safe injection sites for users of illegal drugs rather than getting them help to get off them.
"But it does seem surprising that in a city as large as Toronto, it was not possible to find a more coherent and articulate conservative to fight the power."
Precisely. But it goes deeper. This whole affair is an inditment of conservative voters in general who very clearly don't think strength of character is a good quality in a leader. They can lie, smoke crack, drink till they pass out, drive erratically, and behave like a moronic 18-year-old, but that doesn't matter so long as they talk about cutting taxes. (Forgetting that he's willing to take $1B from the Feds to pay for his subway plan, and that this money comes from... taxpayers).
Think about how sweet it'll be if he gets re-elected.
con-trition?
If Rob Ford Were The Mayor of Vancouver from the Georgia Straight
Why are you here?
Precisely. But it goes deeper. This whole affair (Chappaquiddick) is an inditment of liberal voters in general who very clearly don't think strength of character is a good quality in a leader. They can lie, drink till they pass out, drive erratically, and behave like a moronic 18-year-old, but that doesn't matter so long as they talk about helping people. (Forgetting that he cowardly left a woman to drown just to save his own skin).
You see what I did there, John? You see how it easy it was to parody your nonsense? The left doesn't have a monopoly on qualities pertaining to what makes a good leader, nor does the right possess a monopoly on the qualities that make a bad leader. So stick that in your piehole and shut it for once.
John, can you tell us what strength of character and good quality in a leader means to the left? I mean, most of your leaders are in scandal all the time. Whether it be scams, theft, or pedophilia, the left is always showing that it doesn't have a monopoly on decent behaviour and never will. And last I remember, Rob Ford never charged speaking fees to charities, stolen any money to pay for a wedding, kissed up to any third world dictators, tainted any blood supplies, or made any child porn.
What a relief it must be to all the caring folks at the Toronto Star and the political left that he has done what they have asked and admitted his drug use. So I guess now those caring and tolerant folks will give him some space and allow him time for rehab and to continue governing Toronto in his fiscally responsible manner.
Or will they tear him to shreds. We already know the answer.
Perhaps Ford could pull Duffy and come out against Harper in some way. Then he can be a victim.

Co-sign. He needs to resign and get himself into rehab. And that piece of crap enabler brother of his needs to go with him.
Yeah, Trudeau's a pothead and unfit for office. Yeah, this has been something of a witch-hunt. Yeah, John A. Mac was a drunk. So freaking what? Are we conservatives expected to check our morals & standards at the door and defend detestable creatures like Ford just because we don't want the other side to win elections? If that's what we have to do then we might just as well let the lefties burn society to the ground. What difference would it make?
All you folks who defended Ford for this just got turned into giant fools. Hope you're happy.
I didn't vote for Ted Kennedy. And he's dead. And that was 40 years ago. I'm talking about what's happening in Toronto right now, and how despite being a guy who lies and smokes effing crack, people still vote for the guy.
BUT if the Ted Kennedy incident happened today in the time of the internet... my bet is that his career would be over much like how John Edwards' now is. But Newt Gingrich... still goin' strong despite leaving his sick wife for a woman with whom he was having an affair.
And it's funny that... how long it takes politicians to call the cops when they've done something wrong... oh like say the Vice President of the United States accidentally shooting his friend and then waiting over an hour to call the cops. (Probably to sober up).
On the left, we mostly hold our politicians to account.
So, I guess smoking drugs while in public office is back to being bad again.
Yepper!
Yeah, the Left does indeed hold their politicians accountable. Accountable to the Left. Mr. John, please spare me the sermonizing and the moral high ground. The Left has no ethics, only allegiances to whatever fads rule the day.
Rob Ford is a deceiver and a moral failure. His breach of trust will be judged by the people of Toronto.
The guy is nothing more than the freaking mayor of Toronto, he is not our PM or a US Senator or US VP. He isn't even on a par with Marion Berry. Let's keep some perspective here.
John is obviously a RACIST, why give him any page time.
On the left, we mostly hold our politicians to account.
I'm glad you used the qualifier 'mostly' John because I'm thinking of Jean Chretien here. Remember, he's the guy that never had to explain his behavior because guys like you and the media always gave him a free pass.
Coren made a couple of good points last night. He said that he once asked Ford about Cuba just to use one example. Ford said, "oh yeah Cuba, great beaches and a great place for a vacation". The conservative people that I know would never answer that question in that way.
When I was a regular here a decade or so ago, I was a very dedicated ignorer of trolls. I wish more would adopt this philosophy currently.
That said, Rob Ford did not run as a conservative and was never elected as one. As I stated before, maybe THAT is why he was able to perform fiscally as one.
Fortunately there is still enough time to bring forward someone to take the baton and run with it. The people of Toronto will support such a person. I just hope Ford will snap out of it and get the help he needs and allow his legacy to continue without him. Anything less will mean everything he fought so hard to accomplish will be lost and he will drag all his supporters and the city down with him.
Funny how these conservative haters think they won something today.
Ford blew it ... not the people who supported him.
Elections are popularity contests, not a careful reasoned process to select the person best qualified for the job. It's picking prom royalty not the valedictorians. Election campaigns are always focused on the half of the population with below average intelligence. The simple unavoidable fact that Toronto voters elected a lying, entitled, gluttonous, crack-smoking, alcoholic party animal says a lot more about the intelligence of the voters than anything else.
In a democracy the people get the government they deserve.
This was probably the most excruciatingly painful article ever written by a CBC journalist:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-mayor-rob-ford-could-easily-get-re-elected-1.2355481
I'm laughing my head off.
I don't think Ford should step down. He should carry on doing what he has always been doing for the people of Toronto. And he should seek counselling for his substance abuse. However, I don't think he should run for re-election. He should use what time he has left to do as much good for his constituents as he can in order to poison the well for the inevitable leftist POS that will get in after him. If Toronto gets use to proper fiscal restraint and having a mayor that actually listens to them (ask any person in Scarborough about the transit in that area) then it will be harder for the left to get away with the BS they have been used to for the last few decades.
