interesting place , seem to have recovered from the the previous 60 years. some refer to the Soviets as liberators , others as occupiers. they honour the 1956 revolution even though the liberators didnt leave.

mostly rebuilt , really just ornate concrete , you have to look close to see that its mostly just a coating over the ruins.

There was a bit of a debate a week ago on this thread about a federal panel or other rejecting a gold mining development application in BC. In the course of that debate, it was stated by a commenter that the Harper government could de-fund the panel in question and otherwise eliminate its power, but was not of a mind to do so. That commenter has regularly stated here his position that Mr. Harper is a statist, comme les autres.

I'm not in a position to comment on the circumstances of the panel in question, the basis of their decision in this case or whether its authority was affected by the recent change in federal environmental assessment rules, etc., but have a look at these items:

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/business/Kevin+Page+calls+public+service+renewal+from+ground/9140359/story.html

and

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/joe-clark-book-takes-on-harper-government-s-almost-adolescent-tone-1.2417603

which seem to be suggesting that Mr. Harper is anathema because he is not statist enough for the liking of the senior civil service, or former members thereof. In fact, they go so far as to suggest that the elected government of the day should really be nothing more than an extension of the federal bureaucracy.

Hauling Joe Clark in front of Peter Mansbridge is silly enough (CBC did wonders for Joe back in the day), but Kevin Page's main claim to fame is that he was the first PBO -- a position created, and to which he was appointed by, you know, Mr. Harper. I'm not much sold on the idea that this back-to-the-future long-form-census redux (broken-record?) stuff is going to work where it really counts -- among Conservative-Liberal switchers.

From the CBC page:

Ceeb: "[Joe Clark says] Canada has 'drawn back from the fight against international poverty, peacekeeping, Kyoto, arms control, a broad presence in Africa, and Canada's customary leadership in the United Nations, Commonwealth and related multilateral institutions.'"

If a nation is still in poverty it's because it hasn't emulated the western example and instituted capitalism. The West didn't have foreign aid to help out, all it had -- and needed -- was freedom and the productive minds of its citizens. That's all any nation needs.

Foreign aid is just a scam to loot the productive citizens of the West while propping up dictatorships in other parts of the world, nothing else. It's long past time to abandon it.

On another note, it's always referred to now as a "peacekeeping tradition", but this didn't start until Canada had already attained 90 of its 146 years. There's not much point in acting as a buffer between two nations that subscribe to violent ideologies. If we want to be useful we should encourage them to adopt the peaceful ideology that brought forth capitalism. That's where Canada's "leadership" could bring dividends, and help out in the arms control department too.

As for Kyoto, it's pretty much dead, and was dubious to begin with.

Ceeb: "[Former clerk of the privy council during the Jean Chretien period, Mel Cappe] says the government risks running out of ideas because our know-it-all ministers don't ask for any, and public servants have been too cowed to offer them up."

"This mind freeze, Cappe suggested, has plunged our public service into a deep decline with no end in sight. Ministers arrive in power with ready-made policies while public servants and their detailed studies are ignored."

How awful that a government elected on a political platform should act to carry out its program.

"Our problems have never been more complicated and we have never had better analytic tools to deal with them."

Government is the only institution in society that has the right to use coercion on citizens. It should only be permitted to do so under limited circumstances, that is, to step in when one citizen decides to violate the rights of another. Our "problems" are mainly caused by previous coercive government measures, and the simple solution is to undo that damage. Some complexity might stem from a timeline that is not "immediately" for some issues. How much analysis is truly necessary?

Ceeb: "[Another former clerk of the privy council, Alex Himelfarb, refers to] 'current government distrust of bureaucrats and their studies'"

Is it not possible that if a party were elected to provide big cuts to the power and size of government, the bureaucracy might fear for its life, and take counter-measures? Not that this is actually happening, and certainly not that the Conservatives have done much cutting. But it's always going to be a plausible scenario.

Himelfarb has spewed at length in a couple of articles in the Toronto Star in recent months, usually bemoaning the fate of the long-form census that the social engineers and bureaucrats rely on to maintain the pretense that they can solve big problems through more government coercive action, even though evidence shows it has never worked in the past.

All of their words have the ring of an attempt at bureaucratic self-preservation.

And you would be correct, IMO. Thanks for that.

God love the U.S.A.

I consider myself to be almost as far right as they come in Canada, and even I concur with the writer of the article. 16 hours of firearms training is a minimum if you're going to carry a concealed weapon out in the public.

If nothing else, it helps prevent the crazies from carrying, and gives the po-po an easy arrest when they encounter feral gangstas who haven't taken the required training.

Too bad there isn't training involved for free speech...would keep the crazies from making rights into privileges.

Indeed. I don't need the government to decide if I get to exercise my rights or not. It doesn't work that way...yet.

kcdist,

Then far right is not right enough in Canada.

Joe, you can probably get a good idea by what some states use for wording. Here for example is Virginia:

Greg Weston has written a column that is very critical of the new MP expense disclosure plan that was introduced with much fanfare back in June.

Unfortunately, there is not one mention of Trudeau in the article.
It was Justin's response to the Senate expenses 'scandal'. It was, and still is, meaningless fluff.

Well, as a matter of fact, in most States, in order to get a concealed carry permit, one must have a certain level of training. To simply own a gun, no, but to walk around on the street with a loaded gun on one's person, yes. And legal concealed-carry permit holders usually spend more time at the range than do cops, and have a lower instance of negligent discharge, according to studies done on the matter.

Joe, Gabriola Island in BC is fighting for property rights and they have some knowledge in direction. The contacts are at the bottom of the page. Their battle is at the local level but once MP's are involved it generally moves in the right direction. Worth talking to for information.

Remember the incident in Oakland where one teenager set another on fire? Perp is a 16 year old black kid, who set fire to a white kid wearing a kilt, who identifies as "agender". (I'm not making this up.)

Perp has been charged with assault with hate-crime enhancements, says he did it because of "homophobia".

...one must have a certain level of training. To simply own a gun, no, but to walk around on the street with a loaded gun on one's person, yes.

Not true, in most places allowing open carry, no 'training' is required.

Open carry =/= concealed carry.

Maybe you could explain the practical difference, other than the obvious? And why the need for 'official training' just because a gun is not carried in the open?

A defunct satellite from the European Space Agency the size of a Chevy Suburban is set to plunge to Earth somewhere between Sunday night and Monday afternoon -- and experts say there's no way to precisely determine where it will crash.
