A young Finnish female activist is a vegan and unable to eat prison food, Paikacheva said, adding that prison officials had denied her request for vitamins to be delivered to her.
Several non-smoking activists also complain of being placed in cells with chain-smokers.
First world problems.
Maybe now they understand just what the Ezra meant when he wrote, Ethical Oil.

Boarding an oil rig with the aim of shutting it down is not a peaceful protest.
Serves them all right, and as I said previously, hopefully they get the full whatever the penalty is for piracy.
maybe this will be a lesson to them so that they learn to think about the actually consequences to those caused by their "actions", ppl are freezing in their homes because of hi fuel prices, caused in part by idiots like these.
They're in the pre-trial detention center now. I imagine that once convicted they will end up in a prison that is much worse. Do the Russians still have Siberians work camps?
Pity,pity,pity.
Karma's a witch.
Oh no, not Borscht with pork again!
Well, it was the Soviets who coined the term "useful idiots." So the Russians know exactly what they are dealing with.
Meanwhile, those who actually make a living from Greenpeace get fat off the publicity.
Hope they all get shivved or routinely gang raped in prison. Maybe that will be a deterrent to their terorist activities.
You don't seriously believe they would have their pampered urbancentric ideosycracies pandered to any better in a US prison? Maybe Gitmo but they are the wrong religion/politics for pampered treatment there.
Poor little snowflakes, what did they expect, a ribbon for showing up?
Ken(Kulak)....AFAIK....the penalty in Russia for piracy is death. We could ask a few Somali's,but I am pretty sure they are fish food right now.But I am sure the Chimp-in-Chief is going to talk to Putin about sparing his useful idiots.Maybe the name will be changed from Greenpeace to Green Food?
Heh,heh, heh. Couldn't help but chuckle at the kiddies finding out that the real world, outside the Western day care Countries, isn't so nice. I don't think any of these fools realise how good we have it in our Country compared to the Rest of the World. I'd bet these activists are all "equal culture" types.
I especially feel sorry for the poor little vegan whose diet isn't a concern for the Russian jailers. Maybe they should take the pork outta the borscht for her.
Canada should lobby to have them extradited to a more lenient Country, like Turkey or North Korea.
I wonder what their complaints will be in five years time?
It used to be in many countries that you didn't even receive food in prisons. Either your relatives/friends came every day and brought food or you starved.
Some countries are catching up slower than others.
Few countries have as nice prison conditions as the Anglosphere has, although Norway's prisons are nicer than YWCAs.
Russia has a large and very old organized crime class which operated under Ivan the Terrible and continued operating even under the Soviets. The Russian prison system is designed to accommodate those gangsters, too bad so sad.
Soylent Green is pirates?
Their uncomfortable in Russian prison. I'm going to file this under "What did you think was going to happen?"
This is the country that poisons dissidents with radiation and then watches he die an agonizing death. Grow up children.
Not sure how many of THEM are Canadian. One, far as I heard.
And, nothing wrong with vegetarian borscht. Used to get it during lent every day.
Also, as my fellow traveller Ken (Kulak) points out, these naive idealists will soon learn climbing an oil rig cannot be interpreted as a peaceful protest.
The fact these professional activists can get away with it in North America highlight how soft we've become and how far off kilter our moral compasses have swayed.
Yep...on some matters the Russians are a role model to us all.
The fact these professional activists can get away with it in North America highlight how soft we've become and how far off kilter our moral compasses have swayed.
What a good statement by set you free. These people think they are playing a game and you just hit reset after each round. Western society not only tolerates them but often openly admires their antics. They are going to find out different this time and as another person said recently this will mean that in future only countries that will play the game will get attention from activists. So we better beef up our activist handling skills and budgets because the fun is just beginning.
The Finnish female could have gotten Golden Rice to help with her vitamin deficiencies.
Borscht is beet soup. Last time I checked beet is a vegetable. Besides, Russian gulags haven't been known for their 5 star ratings. Can't fix stupid.
'The Finnish female could have gotten Golden Rice to help with her vitamin deficiencies.' Heh
Sigh. Another classic example of an article misusing the term "activist" for the entire spread. Activist is now code for "Spoiled Brat Wishing to Wreck Things at the Expense of Others, with no Consequences to Self."
BTW, there is a difference between being "unable" to eat prison food and simply "choosing" to not eat prison food. Assuming her mandibles are functional, she is able to eat prison food. She may learn to enjoy the occasional bit of pork in the soup. Starvation is a great teacher, as pre-welfare generations knew so well.
they're (/embarassed)
Hear that tinny squeaking? It's the world's tiniest violin tuning up.
Hmmm... got thinking about what "activist" really means. Could use some help here. Spoiled Brat Using Bullying, As Reason Favors the Other Side? Rebels Without a Brain?
"Several non-smoking activists also complain of being placed in cells with chain-smokers"
What? Does this indicate that Russian prisons are not as progressive as those in the west?
I would hazard a guess that these whining little sh*ts will soon discover that second-hand smoke is the least of their problems.
It's far easier to have empathy for these fools than the two a-holes in Egypt. There's still a chance for baby moonbats... Buttman and Rubbin knew what they were doing and sure as hell should know better. They can rot for all I care.
Don't do the crime if you can't take the time.
Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore
Sink the Arctic Sunrise for marine habitat
Too bad it is not Paul Watson the Russians have i jail.
pkuster.....excellent idea.Finally a good use for something from Green Peace.As Phantom says...punch a hippie...and have a good day.
And oz....soylent green is edible...pirates...not so much..../sarc
Tinkerbell and company may not realize it, but they're already receiving special treatment.
Remember when the Russians encountered those Somali pirates?
When asked by the media what had happend to the pirates, the Russian spokesperson replied with two words. "They died."
When my second cousins were sent to the Gulag food was in short supply and they didn't last long. At least a vegan wouldn't have to spend their time catching rats to eat. Someone deliberately courting imprisonment in Russia probably should be in a mental hospital.
"...but, but, but it was just a PHOTO OP!"
Organized prison crime class still exists and they are the bosses in the prisons.
Biffjr, exactly.
Scar, exactly. Only the very healthy and unscrupulous completed their time.
They thought they were living here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PoZHG60DXA
If you commit Russian crime, be prepared to do Russian time. As for amenities - I wonder if the Murmansk jail sees much other than drunken sailors sleeping it off? I wouldn't care to spend time in the jail at Nain, Labrador, much less Murmansk.
I wonder if the Greenpeaceniks have yet seen videos of Somali pirates being processed by the Russian navy?
I'm actually impressed with Greenpeace for once. It's basically become a joke how many so-called activist organisations only want to protest in civilised countries where they get treated with kid-gloves by the authorities. For once, they actually decided to go and pull their antics in a country where that isn't the case (and got thrown in jail for their troubles with chain-smokers and meals that don't cater to their tastes).
Maybe next we'll get people protesting human rights violations in Middle Eastern and African countries in the actual nations!...nah...
LMFAO
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of hypocrites
Ethical? Sure what's ethical about coddling common criminals? If you condone eco-terrorism, you get more of it, to nobody's benefit but the terrorists.
If I had my way, all Canada's prisons would be well north of the 60th parallel. The mineral wealth up there won't mine itself. The prisoners would only eat if they did their work to the satisfaction of their jailers--and eat what they were given or starve. I'm sure many would arrive overweight. None would leave that way.
The Finnish activist lacks a thyroid gland and needs to take medicine regularly--hard to do without a watch.
Well, you know what? Maybe she should have thought of her health before goading the Russians into flinging her sorry backside into jail, not after.
By the way, the Finns have learned the hard way (after stupidly invading Russia during the Second World War and succeeding only in losing large amounts of territory themselves) not to make any more trouble for the Russians than absolutely necessary. In Soviet times defectors daft enough to try fleeing through Finnish territory were routinely picked up by Finnish police and returned to the Soviet Union. If the Finnish ambassador to Moscow has the sense God gave granite, he won't breathe a word to Putin on her behalf---and not just because the Finns are well rid of her themselves.
Thyroid replacement medication is typically taken daily and is very time insensitive since it has such a long half life. She doesn't need a watch to take her thyroid replacement pills.
I have to admit that the trivial complaints of the watermelons were one of the most hilarious things I've read in some time. Russian jails are not noted for their luxury and, if one wants to stay out of a jail in Russia, then obeying Russian law would be a first start. That's not guaranteed to keep one out of jail in that country, but knowing who to bribe and how large a bribe is required will make ones stay there far more pleasant.
It would be nice if other countries around the world utilized Russian tactics to deal with watermelons, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for this to happen. The types of things that these coddled moonbats chose to complain about reveals more about their mental state than anything else they might do. Being vegan is a choice; I happen to consider it to be a form of psychopathology but veganism hasn't yet got an entry in the DSM4. In Russia it's very simple; you can eat what you're given or you starve. Having smokers in one cell as a complaint indicates a very sheltered existence -- I can think of a lot more worse things that can happen in jails and the fact that they haven't happened to this group of moonbats likely means they're getting special treatment in Russia.
The only person with the valid complaint is the hypothyroid individual who's in a cold cell. As DrD pointed out, one doesn't need a watch to take ones thyroid supplementation and once any time of day is fine.
Can we borrow some of the Russian special forces to deal with the next group of watermelons that chose to make fools of themselves and inconvenience people?
While these people are silly and destructive, wishing the penalty for piracy on them is a little severe. Piracy is a very serious crime indeed and is generally treated as a capital offense, like kidnapping. You're talking really serious jail time, and in some places, death. I know that the Russian navy has demonstrated a very short way of handling real pirates that generally doesn't result in a lot if living prisoners.
Mr Ivey. Get with the program. What they did is indeed piracy. So I can come into your house and set up residence? Please send me your address.A charge of piracy is not wrong. As said above, ask some Somalis how they made it.These Green Peace apes should be kissing theirs jailors butts,as that is all that is keeping them alive.Better yet.I hear the poly bears around Murmansk are a little hungry.Lets play tag with the guys/gals with 4 inch claws and six inch teeth.Should be fun.
"Can we borrow some of the Russian special forces to deal with the next group of watermelons that chose to make fools of themselves and inconvenience people?" Agreed.
Boarding another nation's ships or a stationary facility of some sort without permission with the intention of taking it over or destroying it is piracy or an act of war. Pure and simple.
Ivey, sounds like you should be with your brothers and sisters, fighting the man, in Russia, from behind bars, for the next 15 years or so. At least they will learn one new skill, a new language. And HIV is rampant in Russian jails. The snowflakes should have considered these facts prior to their little marine adventure.
If your pure, that is.
As said before, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Poor little snowflakes, they didn't think ahead what the risks, and outcomes would likely be. You can't fix stupid and Greenpeace sets the standaard.
Ken, Greenpeace is likely reeling from the response of those humorless Russians; it's not as if this was piracy piracy in their opinion! Just remembered about the French sinking a Greenpeace ship some years back; unfortunately an isolated incident. I'm curious how much the release of the watermelons is going to cost Greenpeace? Given the way the Russian system operates, unless Putin has taken a personal dislike to foreign idiots attacking oil platforms, I'm sure that a whole series of individuals involved in the "justice" system have their price for ensuring that certain individuals currently in jail have their cell doors accidentally unlocked and guards turn a blind eye to those people leaving the prison. I'm sure this amount of cash would likely amount to the majority of the funds that Greenpeace raises every year -- especially if high level officials were to be involved in the "release" of prisoners.
You got it, the system still works the same way it always has, unless like you suggest Putin feels inconvenienced by this incident. I had my cousin bring a hand made clock from Siberia a few years ago and one luck he had extra Euros along as he had to grease a few palms in Omsk and Mockba.
I still have visions of what you suggested in your comment on the previous thread about what it would take for you to get the boot. LOL!
