Let's Talk CRTC

"And take the CBC with you."

Done.
Already saw one post that looks like it was taken right out of the lefts play book. If the laurentian elites want more "diversity" they can dig in their own pocket.

I understand the CRTC is going to bust up the "packaging" concept of cable sales - where in order to get an individual program/channel you want you are forced to take a collection ("package") of low grade Can-content clone channels you never watch (and of course subsidize these freeloaders with your extended cable bill). You will soon be able to chose, and only pay for, cable channels you actually watch. For me this means about 5 (TCM,AMC,TSN,SNN and a local independent),down from the 50 plus I now pay for and never watch, and vastly cutting my cable bill. As an added benefit, I will be defunding what I consider to be a collective of subsidized insider Can-content loser channels - perhaps CBC will be one of the victims of this consumer-driven cable sales change. And if the cable mogus want me to watch more channels upping my bill they better offer some with entertainment or information VALUE - generally this means opening the gates to US and Euro specialty channels.

If you are writing or offering opinion to the CRTC make sure you make it clear to them that you want to only pay for the channels you want - I think that will essentially kill CBCs cable sales.

Dream on. CBC will still be a required channel whether we watch it or not.
I have Shaw Direct and at last count, I am forced to have some 22 CBC channels cluttering up the channel lineup. Living in SW Ontario I really don't need CBC Kamloops or CBC Dryden.

saw ur comment over there, short and to the point. To many beurarats on the payroll paid by u and me.They like their big houses so don't expect to much cutting.

I haven't had cable in ten years; I used to pirate everything, now I just hack around the location restrictions on Hulu, Netflix, and the various networks' web sites so I can can get their US-only content here. This costs me in total about half of what I used to pay for basic cable. Whenever a cable company drone cold calls me trying to get me to subscribe, I tel them exactly this and ask them what they've got that's competitive. They usually hang up.

In my experience, the CBC tends to stereotype, not celebrate diversity when it comes to different regions of the country.

For example, even though the fisheries make up a small percentage of Atlantic Canada's economy, it makes up a high percentage of CBC reports.

Of course, when it comes to Indians, it's not about all Indians being hunters and trappers.

The problem is the CRTC's premise that Canadians are to stupid to make their own choices, and that it is the responsibility of the State to determine what Canadians can and should watch. The CRTC claims they are all for freedom of expression, yet they are the ones that mandate we pay for sub-standard, Canadian content and a biased State owned, agenda driven Broadcaster, all while "protecting" us from the nasty, evil U.S.A. How can they seek to solve the problem when it is the CRTC that is the problem, not free thinking Canadians.

They may be repackaging, but I am pretty sure this will not result in cuts to your cable bill. Things will be priced in such a way that you will pay the same -- or more -- and get less. I do not trust the providers to structure this to work in favour of consumers. They will also charge extra for having to program lots of customized packages (won't be hard, but just like banks it is an additional cost they will bill for.) I am surprised the government did not think of that.

Live sports aside, I go directly to the Internet and cut out the CRTC and cable providers. I watch what I want, when I want. I will not be limited by a schedule set by a network or limited to a list of programs and channels "approved" by nosy bureaucrats.

And the premise the cable companies operate on is that vast numbers of Canadians are too stupid or too weak-willed to insist on paying for only the channels they want to watch or just don't mind how much unwatched programming they are getting as long as the total price is affordable, and that is the market they are serving. Look around: they are right. Vast numbers of Canadians do pay for these bundles and just don't watch what they don't want to watch, rather than tell the cable companies, "I want only these channels, tell me what you will charge to provide only these channels and I will either buy or decide to do without." And then follow through.

But most people, including many who rail against big government and a nanny state, welcome the government coming to their rescue so they don't have to flick through so many channels. The cable companies aren't going to give up the income, they are going to charge more per channel. Here comes that government you asked for, open wide and suck it, baby, suck.

The CBC has got to go. Buy a 'De-fund the CBC' bumper sticker here:

Don't think for a moment that your cable bills are going to decrease with this move. Cable companies are not about to agree to having their revenues slashed just because we don't want to pay for the crap we are now forced to pay for but never watch.

The channels that we do want to watch are going to be much more expensive as standalones once the un-bundling is done.
