Riding Mass Transit Is Like Inviting 20 Random Hitchhikers Into Your Car

Homeless man who 'pushed student in front of a train when she refused to give him money' rambles incoherently about people trying to kill him during bizarre court appearance. (h/t WalterF)

And there is the problem with mass transit, in a nut shell. Using transit forces ordinary citizens to rub shoulders with the dregs of society. People waiting for a train or bus to arrive are effectively hostages to any nuts or predators that frequent the transit sites.

Put crazy people back in the nuthouse. Back in the 1950s and 1960s a few of our neighbours spent much of their adult lives in the looney bin. Now they are thrown onto the streets to prey on the rest of us or be prey for those crazier than them.

Sounds to me like the guy would make a perfect politician. Give me money or I kill you.

Hm, another paranoid schizophrenic, who should have been safely incarcerated in an institution, strikes another innocent victim.

But where were the taxpayers when the politicians announced that they were "releasing them from the unnatural environment of an institution to live at home in the loving bosom of their family"?

As usual, apathy comes back to bite us in the ass.

I agree with Scar on this one. Governments in North America have turned people who should be in an institution onto the streets because mentally deranged people have rights (according to the ACLU and others) and they can save money by closing down the sanatoriums. The mentally ill end up being homeless which is a worse fate than being in a sanatorium and since no one is there to make sure they take their meds they commit crimes due to their paranoid delusions.

But you're stigmatizing homeless people as all having mental health issues. We should judge our society on how well we allow dangerous mental patients to roam freely amongst people in society while in their deranged state, without getting help because that would stigmatize them more.

Like Kathie Shaidle said. I liked nurse Ratchet.

This is what happens when you give Freedom to people who are insane. When in the name of "tolerance" you set them free to starve without being watched, or medicated.
People like this where put away for a reason. Its only political expediency that that has allowed this tragedy of inverted behaviour. By allowing these people to live like animals they become even worse.

"Put crazy people back in the nuthouse" - nah - give `em driving licenses and let them loose on the roadways, along with Ms. McMillan. Same with hitchhikers. Thinking about it, though, it might be impossible to lower the calibre of the average driver. Let alone those who think their vans are submarines.

There's a fine line between genius and insanity, e.g., the idiot savant. (usually severely autistic)

That said it's my belief that psychology and psychiatry are both far from a science; actually black arts.

Nothing else can explain the use of ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy), a variation of which is gaining in popularity. An analogy might be deleting all files from your PC's hard drive b/c of frequent and annoying browser pop-ups. Now where's the recovery CD?

Neo, your taking a pretty broad swipe there, I doubt you even know what a genius or an autistic actually is. As to the fine line, it really does not exist. The matter is that it's not who's crazy or who's sane, but to what degree each person actually is sane/insane. And neo, electro shock therapy cured my mother, so it must do some good!!!

Hey, Kate, why don't you back up an argument such as this with statistics showing a greater likelihood to be killed on mass transit vs. driving your car? Surely the numbers show that, right?

And surely you can get through Manhattan faster in your vehicle than I can on the subway, right?
